And add in all the chestnuts like those who insisted Brian was "forced" by either the label or his "handlers" to work with his guest musicians, with some saying he had no clue who those artists even were...Then the truth came out that in fact Brian's kids had suggested and even played those artists for their dad in a few cases, and in one specific case an artist who some of these 'experts' claimed Brian didn't know had actually babysat Brian's kids years ago. Little things like that in the name of denigrating a new album, I don't get it.

Just out of curiosity, which of the guest vocalists was it that had babysat Brian's kids? (I'm guessing it was Zooey?)

Yes, that was Zooey! Besides Zooey and M Ward (She & Him) being massive Brian Wilson fans who have covered his songs, Zooey's family history with Brian goes back to her dad Caleb being involved with the original promo film for Good Vibrations in 1966.

So all of those idiots who were suggesting Brian didn't know who Zooey was and vice versa, suggesting Zooey (and M Ward) weren't real musicians, suggesting Brian was "forced" to work with them...they were and are idiots who didn't know enough about the situation to make such comments even before the album came out. And when it did come out, the song itself is a straight-up, dead-on tribute to the Bossa Nova sounds of Astrud Gilberto, and Zooey did a terrific job matching her vocal style, yet some who must have cotton stuffed in their ears and no knowledge of 60's Bossa Nova tried to suggest it sounded like 1930's cabaret singers or something absurd.

I love the song, and I think She & Him (and Zooey herself) are very cool and I dig their music a lot. I was happy to see them work with Brian.

Don't forget that Zooey interviewed Brian with the release of That Lucky Old Sun:

This is the quote that made me think it may be cancelled:

I find it amazing reading through this thread that so many people have learned nothing about this band's fatal flaw...which historically is of course themselves. And definitely not all of them. Howie laid it all out for you in big flashing letters, but some people are still stumbling around, confused, wondering if it's Covid-19, or marketing, or the label that's holding this up. Jesus, c'mon people. Look at the f'n history of this band. Read Howie's posts because he knows everything. He can't name names because he's a professional with bridges intact and trying his best to keep them that way. This box could have been released months ago. It could have a solid release date right now. It's ready. We want it. The label wants it. But that can't happen because the circular firing squad is doing their thing ...again. It's often a one or two man circular firing squad BTW. People have written chapters in book's about it. Maybe this will get worked out, it doesn't look great right now. But if you wonder why? Look at the history of the band, the answer is obvious. Finding a way to f*** up a beautiful thing. It's in the DNA of the Beach Boys.

Is it possible that some of the unreleased stuff is so good that some in the band believe it will make them look bad that it wasn't included on the albums originally?  Probably not, but that thought just popped into my head.

It kind of ties in to that discussion about the Pet Sounds cover, how they can put certain colors on the label and use a certain font and it immediately says "Pet Sounds!". I think it's awesome, and am wondering if this could be one of the first brews specifically done as a tribute to either the band or the album. Of course with the number of craft brewers and microbrews out there, I'm sure there are others.

Just called the new liquor store down the street from me and they have it.  I will be checking it out tonight.  Thanks for posting about it, I had no idea that it existed.

Excellent, that's great you could find it! Looking forward to a review after you've poured a glass.

Just again recommending that anyone interested in trying this beer get in touch with your local store and ask for it if it's not in stock, so they can maybe call their distributor who could order it from the brewery, or go to the brewer's website where they have a listing by area of who sells their beers.

I am not great with different beers.  I generally like most beers.  I liked this one.  I will probably continue to buy it due to the Beach Boys connection.  It is not very hopy though. I live in the Cincinnati Area.  It is available at Jungle Jims and Arrow Wine & Spirits if anyone else lives in the Cincinnati area.

81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Any isolated tracks of Dennis playing guitar? on: July 10, 2020, 08:50:25 AM
According to Badman, years before the rest of us heard it, Well You Know I Knew exists on a tape with Charles Manson running through a few songs on acoustic guitar. Take that as you will. If that has anything to do with the identity of the guitarist on a now-released song I don't expect it'd ever be confirmed for understandable reasons.

There are two acoustic guitars on "Well You Know I Know", so one could be Dennis, while the other could be...someone else.

Do we think this song is a co-write with that other guitarist, or is it really just by Dennis?

Um, so this has been out there under everyone's noses for over 6 months: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng3b4NbKvv8

At the time of this video (December), one track of Fred's with vocals was being considered for the boxset, so we might see that on the tracklist. It sounds shockingly good.

Don't know how to take Fred's "this one happened to survive" comment (he previously said he still had all of the tapes), but it's looking like whatever's there has been digitally transferred and will probably make it out in some form before the end of the year.

Wow, that is cool to hear.

Every LP could and SHOULD be a box set.
The Brother vault is an embarrassment of riches.

Especially during the eras where ALL SIX were composing/producing.
It's ridiculous. Absolute Vitamin C.

What is the timeline for this box set?
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best Brian Wilson collaborator on: May 21, 2020, 05:19:05 AM
From a solo perspective of released stuff I would say Scott Bennett.  I think That Lucky Old Sun is a fantastic record and One Kind of Love is a great song as well.  I always liked the idea of Brian collaborating with Darian, but it never happened.

Is Rhapsody  In Blue the same recording of Brian that's been booted?

What has been booted?  Is it available on youtube or anywhere?
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Van Dyke Parks announces Orange Crate Art reissue with bonus tracks! on: May 19, 2020, 06:35:28 AM
Pre-ordered this today.  It would be cool if there were demos of the songs performed by Van Dyke, or demos similar to the OCA performance in the IJWMFTT movie.

What is the backstory of this movie, I have never seen it, and only heard about how terrible it is, but never any details.
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What do we really know about the late 60's- early 70's Murry Wilson? on: May 06, 2020, 12:39:07 PM
Not sure where to start...

Of the 50 or so songs Murry wrote or co-authored in his lifetime, very few were copywritten in the 70s. The bulk of his writing was in the 50s. The people working most frequently in music with Murry in the years near the end were Fred Vail and Rick Henn. Murry had cash, so he was cutting surprisingly well produced and performed demos (like The Snow one that came out recently). If he had songs he wanted to hawk, he paid for a good studio, good engineers, and good players to record them for him. He also wrote and cut more jingles than just the KFC one. Alan Boyd has indicated to me that the very last song Murry submitted for copyright (once in 1972, then again in 1973 for some reason) was a stab at a commercial jingle. I would love to get my hands on that for my upcoming Murry LP project.

All-in-all, what gets me most about Murry is he was writing songs off-and-on for 40 years. Only about 20 of the 50 compositions were ever recorded and released. Mostly he's remembered for The Many Moods instrumentals, but that was an anomaly. He wrote songs with lyrics mostly.

What is your Murry LP project?  Do Tell!
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike Love single on: May 01, 2020, 07:21:08 PM
Mike Love has just released a new single called This Too Shall Pass

What a fun record! Produced by Scott Totten. Great energy. Nice 50's/60's rock feel. No audible autotune, Mike's voice sounds more natural than on UTL.

Have to admit, this is a very nice surprise. I'll be spinning the song a lot.

Yes, it kinda gives me some "student demonstration time" vibes with the hamfisted politically "conscious" lyrics, but musically the song is so fun and optimistic, it brought a smile to my face.

A new Mike Love single nearly 60 years The BB's first single. How cool.

Totten did a fantastic job with the production and arrangement. Mike's voice sounds great.

And god willing, "this too shall pass"!!

Love and Mercy everyone.

Having just read through all these replies I am saddened that all the ML and Trump haters can't get past their biases and support someone who has given us so much wonderful music for almost 60 years has done something good for the hungry in this troubled time. I bought his single on I-tunes to support this charity. Bash away!

I bought it on iTunes as well.  I am a completist and buy everything, and I like that it supports the charity.  But I also take issue with a lot of bad lyrics, and not giving Totten credit for writing the music.  BTW, how many songs at this point has he name checked Fun, Fun, Fun in?  I count at least 3 which is 3 too many:

Brian's Back
Summer in Paradise
This Too Shall Pass

Here's a safer link to the ESQ review with Facebook's tracking removed (everything from the question mark onward):

Sounds to me like Mike wrote the words and Scott wrote the music, but Mike is credited as the only writer on it.

In the ‘70s, Elton would’ve at least have met Carl since he did the background vocals on ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elton had met a few others then. Probably not Brian though.

I would imagine he hung out with them here:

It is interesting that he posted this.  Larry Dvoskin's sound cloud page used to have a version of this song with Al singing, but it is no longer on this page.

Why was "My Obsession" so good for Brian? I just don't get it...

I think I have heard that he was at the recording session.  He talks about this song on the "Brian Wilson On Tour" DVD.

Another songs that I remember hearing that he loves:

My Impersonal Life - Three Dog Night

Here's a nice photo of Maureen and Brian in 2016.

https://www.facebook.com/ESQ.Editor/posts/10154550311832487

Cool! Nice to see. Guess she was at one of the Pet Sounds 50 shows, then.

Yes, and this photo of Brian and Maureen meeting at Brian's show in Portland was posted to Brian's social media weeks before Mike's autobio co-writer Jim Hirsch said in an interview that Maureen and the Love brothers Stan & Steve were "estranged from Brian. They cannot get to him." http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,24512.msg593448.html#msg593448

Obviously that wasn't the case...

Yeah... or like in 2006 when Brian watched a game of Steve's son with him:

I think that is Stan.
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TRAINWRECKORDS: Summer In Paradise on: March 26, 2020, 03:15:17 PM

So, a Brian Wilson capable of singing and arranging *all* the vocals on something like the "Orange Crate Art" album, coupled with a huge bag of songs, a solid facilitator in Andy Paley, a then pretty hot producer in the form of Don Was, and a group with nothing else to do, all suggested that a Beach Boys album with that material had little chance of being a disaster if the band members had put any weight behind it.

Not to be picky about it, but OCA's vocals arrangements were written by Van Dyke himself, at last that was the case with the title song. BTW, Van Dyke is working with Omnivore Records on a reissue of OCA with bonus tracks, but not alternate takes by Brian, AFIK.

That is cool.  I wonder what other bonus tracks there are besides What a Wonderful World.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I believe the female on Doing Time On Planet Earth is Paula Abdul.  The version I have of this song sounds like it was taken from a 7th generation cassette, so it is hard to tell, but I am pretty sure I read that it was her.

No idea on Too Much Sugar, I assume they are some studio background singers that sang on various recording sessions as session vocalists.
