Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Love You live - are there any videos?
|
on: October 09, 2017, 09:25:29 AM

I am sorry if this was answered before, but I was wondering if there are any videos of Love You songs performed live. I know they used to play things like Love is a woman, Airplane, Roller Skating Child or Honkin' Down the Highway but can't find anything other than audios (actually there is a concert on youtube - Largo, Maryland, January 21st 1977 - but the audio is out of sync and the second part is completely mute). Do you guys know of any video? Thank you!

It was of course not a serious suggestion.
I'd say VDP would be more likely to accept an offer from Mike than Mike would be to accept an offer/pitch from VDP.
I'd love to see it, if for no other reason than the fact that VDP's story from the "SIP" sessions about being confronted 25 years later about the same "Cabinessence" lyrics, along with being stiffed for the cost of a private plane ride, is among my favorite hilarious BB-related stories. [/quote]
I don't know this one, but it sounds funny. Now I am sooo curious! Could anyone explain what happened? Thank you!

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Radiant Radish shirt at my Thesis Defense!
|
on: September 28, 2017, 09:23:16 AM

My PhD Defense in Philosophy took place last week in Rio de Janeiro and I wore my Radiant Radish shirt to it! Even though it was a philosophy thesis, there was a few mentions to the Beach Boys: the epigraph, from Cabinessence ("over and over the crow cries uncover the cornfield"), the first section of the first chapter was called "pet sounds" and the last paragraph of the conclusion was a commentary from Lambert's book about Louie and Banana's place in Pet Sounds - it was a thesis on animals and politics. Besides that, I wrote the whole text while listening to the Beach Boys, so I thought it was very appropriate to wear the Radiant Radish shirt. The defense was great and the committee loved the thesis - I even got an invitation to publish it! - so I'm very glad to have made justice both to animals, since I wrote it for them, and to the Beach Boys, especially Brian and the dogs, who helped me so much during the process of writing. Maybe it is stupid to talk about it here, it's just that I am so happy about it all! I don't know how to post pictures, but here's a link: https://imgur.com/JVxT20yLong live the Beach Boys, who keep inspiring so many people and works!

Brian on the piano playing Surf's up with that angelic voice of his was what actually turned me on to the Beach Boys. I used to be the "casual fan" before that, I guess - loved Pet Sounds and the hits before it, but didn't really knew their music or history. It was only after watching the video from The Rock Revolution that I really started to research them, like buying books, looking for studio sessions, buying all their albums on vinyl etc. That performance was a game changer for me. And I am still astounded by it. Other than that, I think Brian is so handsome in it, hahaha, his hair looks so nice... And love the way he really seems into the music, with his eyes closed, it's pure expression. Another thing that I've always noticed is how he barely opens his mouth even to reach those insanely high notes.

Hey, I am sorry if this was answered before, but what is this Brian's fiction piece for Beat magazine in 1966? There are some amazing quotes from it on the Good Humor website, and I, in my ignorance, didn't have the slightest idea such a thing existed. Is it a fiction article written by Brian? - and, if not asking much, where can I find it? Thank you so much in advance.
Now I see it's "Brain Wilson" - who is it?

Wow! I had been to his website once but didn't have the chance to explore it like I should. I actually had another version of Adult Child, the one with H.E.L.P. is on the way, but without Marilyn Rovell, Diane and Our team, for example. I'm specially fond of Life is for the living (a Broadway song in less than two minutes, and oh, those lyrics!), It's over now, Still I dream of it (one of my favorites songs ever) and that beautiful version of Deep Purple. Really love Brian's rendition of it, with that kind of husky voice - it's like he is giving the song back to its "common use", very heartfelt but not "oversung". It's great, thank you so much! It's so nice to find another fans of those albums! (sorry for my english, not a native speaker).

Most of my friends know how much I love the beach boys, so they are used to listening to Love You at my place. And luckily people seem to like it a lot too. The album is funny (johhny carson, solar system) and poignant (the night was so young) and it anticipates a lot of stuff musically. Also, there's that beautiful Patti Smith piece about it. In my opinion, it is the last of their great albums.
Smiley smile is another one of our favorites here. Love the lo-fi laid-back trippy psychedelicate intensely melodic feeling.
And, yes, also a great fan of the unreleased Adult Child - I'm with thorgil, who said he likes "left-field" Brian.
So, I don't know which albums are the most divisive, but I just don't listen to a lot of their post-77 music.

Really wonderful article, from the beginning to the pictures (loved the one of Brian with a hose) to that beautiful closing:
"As I say goodbye, Wilson holds onto my hand for several seconds, then leans over and kisses it. "I hope I give a good show tonight," he says quietly. "And I hope I go to heaven.""
You sure are, Mr. Wilson! We love you so much!
