Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Prince

It may just be me, but I don't hear so much 'soul' in his voice Why did this not surprise me? ...Wait, because he's black his voice must automatically ooze 'soul'? The vocals of his I've heard sound as processed as Brians on "Imagination", which people here call lifeless dreck... Hell, is he even black? Is it even relevant to the discussion? I hear white 'soul' singers like Steve Winwood and I hear very 'unsoulful' black singers like Arthur Lee... and from what I've heard, Prince. So is 'soul' merely about the delivery, or is it about the passion (or apparent passion) inherent in a vocal? Like I contend, the vocals on Pet Sounds, for the most part, sound as rehearsed as all buggery, and I feel that weakens their impact... While Morrisey on "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" is one take, and emotionally devastating...

Bugul was kind enough to supply me with some Prince, and my mum got "Musicology" for Christmas... But his sound doesn't really cut my mustard... It's either ludicrously bass-heavy with him squealing over the top, or it's all wierd processed instruments and an underdone vocal... It may just be me, but I don't hear so much 'soul' in his voice (it's even harder when it's on a bizarre production), he's either speaking or shrieking...
I don't know anything about the guy (apparently he's interesting) but his music doesn't make me funk... and I sure like some funk.
Still, I found "The Beautiful Ones" an addictive little (big) song for the most part... So 'm happy to give "Musicology" a few more spins and see what I feel.
(Yes, I know "The Beautiful Ones" isn't on "Musicology", but that's the only full album I have)

I thought Platoon was pretty good... If only for Charlie Sheens fine performance (not a big fan of his, but I really connected with the character...) Willem Dafoe was good too... Whole lotta pathos when he died. Onto the topic, I've never gotten the whole "Bridges looks like Brian" thing... I don't see much resemblance. Who would play young Brian? Hayley Joel Osment?

Alright Matinee, what the hell? After reading you say that the 90's album "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" had Brian's best singing OF HIS CAREER, BEFORE OR SINCE, I couldn't let this statement go. "Little Duece Coupe" is the strongest pre-"All Summer Long" album?? It's better then "Shut Down Vol. 2"??
"Shut Down Vol. 2" came out 4 months before "All Summer Long" and contains "Fun Fun Fun," "Don't Worry Baby," "Warmth of the Sun," "This Car of Mine," and "Keep an Eye on Summer." That kicks "Little Duece Coupes" ass. Thanks.
I'm quite sure I said they're the best vocals of his 'solo' career (excluding the '66 Caroline No, if you want to be a smartass). Until I came here and read everyone slagging them off about being out of tune and the like, I didn't notice... all I heard was highly emotive vocals which I haven't heard on any other legitimate BW solo release. Listen to them without being so damn critical... His version of "Meant For You" pisses all over the Friends version for example. Onto LDC vs SD... Yes, SD has higher peaks, but much, much lower troughs... My god, with the amount of crap on the SD album you'd think Brian scooped it out of an Elephant enclosure with a shovel. LDC is all solid (even the 'oldies')... I mean, I recently found out that even Brian wanted to scrap SD and start from scratch... he wasn't allowed though... I wish he was. Thankyou.

I find the music completely mediocre in every way and it's polished to within an inch of its life, so it barely exists. It's so completely lifeless and uninspiring, to me.
I do often feel that way about "Pet Sounds", so take my opinion with a grain of salt... But I had to endure a car ride with this Blunt character, not an enjoyable time. Insipid melodies framed in an emotionally bankrupt voice (just because you can 'sing' high, doesn't mean you should "but hey, look how emotional I'm being"), painful production... Can't remember liking a single second of it. Still, more power to you GP... it's nice for people to be passionate about their music... but this certainly ain't my thing. Does that 'qualify' as an opinion? Or should I've limited to a couple of words?

I find that with "Surf's Up" and "Day in the life of a tree" it's the codas that really smack me right in the heart... the rest of the songs leaves me cold...
"I heard the word, wonderful thing a childrens soooo-ooooo-oooong" and the following "Child-child" stuff is one of the most beautifully resonant things I've ever heard... but up until then it doesn't do much for me...
as for "Tree", again the song leaves me undercooked until the devastating coda...
Two of bri's best codas ever.

The only solo singing Bri does is after Van Dyke's "trees like me weren't meant to live" line, after all the other vocal parts have come in...I'm almost positive it's Brian singing "Oh lord I lay me down" during the fade, somewhat buried in the mix.
It sounds more like Al's folky tinge to these ears... Does anybody know for certain?

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / A friends father has passed away...
|
on: January 31, 2006, 04:05:18 AM

Hello everyone,
I'm to write a letter to a friend of mine, my old singing teacher, who's father just recently passed...
I'd like to write my condolences, and that "where words fail, music speaks..."
Is there a touching, relevant lyric that would make a fitting end to the letter anyone can suggest?
I was thinking "Farewell my friend, my beautiful friend... You take the high road, I'll take the low road and we'll meet again..."
Sorry if this seems rather self serving to start a whole thread about, but any thoughts'd be appreciated...

Why is that off topic? She was 50's. Don't know her well but all I have heard is startling. I probably need to know more.
Strange Fruit. Get it right now Jeff, the song... it's the scariest song I've ever heard. Stunning.
