I'm getting you into a second band for Christmas.

You've heard this song?  Perfect tune.

But yes, a second band would be FAB, thanks Chris Smiley

I also really like "An American Trilogy" by Elvis a whole lot...

Those records were not more advanced than the Beach Boys.

Now, I'm a Finn disciple... but while the BB's ARE above the Beatles to me, I can't agree with that statement... Pre Rubber Soul I think the only albums that stand up to the Beatles LPs are Surfin' USA, Little Deuce Coupe, All Summer Long and Today (Not sure where Summer Days fits in)...  Now that is alot, but there still is some  dreck on all the albums I mentioned...

I suppose the difference is the fabs SOUND like they put alot of effort into their filler, while the BB's it's so damn obvious it's frustrating...

Better Be Home Soon - Crowded House...  Undecided

I miss the Dick Rising jokes.

It's all alittle PC for me to actually believe I'm there with the Beach Boys...

3 1/2 stars.  Some very beautiful stuff (the Beatles covers), "There's No Other" and "Devoted to You" particulalars.

I'll get downloadin'  now... Onya mate.

Mmm, Elvis and Cocker were great reinterpretors of other peoples tunes... Most always improving them.

I think I like their covers more than the ones that were written by/for them.

I mean, Cocker's "The Letter"... FOOK!

And suddenly everything becomes... clear.

Lookit, thar's another raggedy, salty bastard whose voice I love.  He got kicked out of Australia for drug posession...

Bridge Over Troubled Water - same as Something or Let It Be?  I have trouble with that song too, it has the nice emotional peaks in "I will lay me down", but I don't know... doesn't quite get over the line for me...  (this is based on S&G, a fucking awful version in a school talent show and a whole bunch of shitty "Australian Idol" versions...)

Though, I ain't heard Elvis do it...  if he did, that'd be worth reevaluating it.

George wrote it for him?  Didn't know that...

I like the version on the best of CD I have... But I've never been terribly partial to that song, doesn't cut my mustard.

Am I the only person who digs what he did with "With a Little Help From My Friends"?, I thought he whooped the original... awesome organ/guitar interplay.
136  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Yellow Submarine on: January 16, 2006, 06:16:48 PM
Made a great song even greater, eh Ian? Wink

Speaking of Joe Cocker.  I really like 'im... I like all the versions of Beatles tunes he did more than the originals (I think)...

Beaut, see that's what I love about this place, short, succinct answers.

Thanks guys.

I'd have liked to hear Let it Be sung by Elvis.
139  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bryds on: January 16, 2006, 06:09:47 PM
Yeah, thanks Jason and alan...

I wish I was into the Monkeys... Ian and others says the "Pisces, Aquarius" things are fantastic, but all I ever find in stores is a recent 'best of' (probably released on the coattails of the Shrek film)... is this a wise start, a best of?  or an original album the way to go?
140  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bryds on: January 16, 2006, 05:54:18 PM
I must say, I'm not really into Country Music... and this is probably the best place to ask, what is the easiest way to get into it?  I've got the Kinks "Muswell Hillbillies", but I must say I prefer most of the non-'straight country' tunes on it (Oklahoma USA and Alcohol are brilliant, etc)

Aie, so  I don't want to jump in the deep end, so maybe some bands that were predominantly pop but with country influences creeping in'd be appreciated... like the Byrds no doubt... Is "Notorious Byrd Brothers" straight country or a nice mix?

Ugh... that was  longwinded.
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile on: January 16, 2006, 05:27:50 PM
I don't understand the first question suga, but I thought Smile would be a 7 minute version of Heroes and Villains followed by 40 minutes of incidental animal noises/farting/drugged out laughter.
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian songs 71-75??? on: January 16, 2006, 05:26:04 PM
I don't know/Haven't a clue.

I'm more interested in/curious about what the rest of the band were coming up with/working on around this time/period in history...

I hope someone can help you mate/Good luck.
143  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bryds on: January 16, 2006, 05:13:40 PM
NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS!  Grin

Damn, I'd have looked a right prat if I went into the CD shop and ask for the "Fabulous Bird Brothers"...

Thanks mate Wink
144  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bryds on: January 16, 2006, 05:03:19 PM
Eight Miles High.

Must get "Fabulous Bird Brothers", see what all the fuss is about Wink
145  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What live act must you see before you die? on: January 16, 2006, 04:50:46 PM
I saw the Mike and Bruce BB's Band with America and Richard Clapton supporting... My first 'real' concert... Wonderful time.

I'd really like to see Split Enz (soon my pretties! Wink) Ray Davies (or the Kinks), Page and Plant (or Page, or Plant, or  whoever), Morrisey could be good...
146  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: One band..... on: January 15, 2006, 10:00:11 PM
Unplugged?  Neil and Tim Finn, joined by Noel Crombie on spoon percussion and Phil Judd playing uke.
147  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Great SOUNDTRACKS on: January 15, 2006, 05:46:10 AM
My favourite film score composer is Thomas Newman... Who did the scores for films such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Horse Whisperer, The Green Mile, American Beauty, Road to Perdition...

His music really touches me, there was a time when I listened to nothing but his scores.

I also really like the score by James Newton Howard for Snow Falling on Cedars, some of Michael Nymans works (The Piano mainly), aswell as some of Hans Zimmers - The Thin Red Line, Black Hawk Down...

Nice thread. Smiley
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: January 15, 2006, 02:59:21 AM
One day I had Sunflower on and I fell asleep during "At My Window". I woke up during the verse to Cool Cool Water and it was just amazing. I guess I wasn't fully woken but I was aware of what sound was entering my ears and I could interpret it. It all made sense then for that one track.

I've never enjoyed that song as much as in that state, that once.

Damn man, exact same thing here...  I woke up during the haunting, Smile-era part... lying awake in bed at night, hearing that... the heavens opened Wink

Onya mate, perfect.
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: things you like about Mike Love on: January 15, 2006, 01:51:19 AM
His lyrics to Let The Wind Blow and all the other ones that knock us off our feet.

His experiments with facial hair were possibly more experimental than SMiLE  :D

So yes, his beard.

You haven't the heard the lyrics for the extended, alternate version of the song?

"...Let the beard grow..."

* Shuffles out quietly, disgusted with himself *
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Today! on: January 15, 2006, 12:38:49 AM
What I find interesting is that on Today! and Pet Sounds, he put the most hotly debated songs, "Ronda" and "Sloop" slap bang in the middle of the album.

Sortof a 'f*** you' to the listener (or the record company) perhaps?
