Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Good Vibrations Dennis Vocals
|

So this is something I noticed kinda recently and searched for but couldn't find anything about...
In the first verse of Good Vibrations, there's obviously a tape splice that flies Brian's high falsetto "I hear the sound of a" and then back to Carl, but is there another that adds Dennis backing Carl during the line "On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air"? It sounds different than the rest of Carl's double tracked vocals in the song, and it sounds like Dennis was added into the mix, especially on "perfume through the air". Also, you can hear another splice right before the line starts. You don't hear that in the second verse with the same melody ("She goes with me to a blossom world"), and that one is obviously just Carl.
Not super life-changing/ground-breaking or anything, but I was wondering if anyone else hears it too or knows more about it. Maybe I'm just hearing things!

What horn-like instrument is being played on every 2nd and 4th beat in the pre-chorus for "IJWMFTT"? I didn't notice it till recently when I was listening to the instrumental backing track. I can't hear it as well with headphones but for some reason I've noticed it more on speakers You can find the rundown of instruments on "IJWMFFT" at c-man's indispensable site: http://www.beachboysarchives.com/page10Maybe that will help. I have cloth ears but it might just be a bass harmonica you're hearing... I was thinking it was a bass harmonica too at first but it has a completely different timbre, almost sounds like an old car horn or a chair scooting on wooden flooring hahaha. It may be a bass clarinet

Transcendental Meditation (vocals only) could be really interesting.
How many released, BBs album songs are there where the are a bunch of vocal harmonies, and Brian is the ONLY BB doing all of the singing on the *entire* song?
Would this be the only one? Songs like Caroline, No and Your Summer Dream aren't in the running since there are no harmony vocals.
Wipeout kinda doesn't count in my book; not a real BBs song, plus there's other vocalists on the song. I guess there's the non-album "Beach Boys" song from the late 80s, Barbie. We have the all-Brian Don't Talk intro snippet from the Pet Sounds Sessions, but that was of course never on an actual album. There have been claims of I Just Wasn't Made for These Times being all Brian (even the harmonies), but I thought that was debunked (even prior to the revelation that Denny is likely heard in bits of the lead).
Just for the unusual nature of this song alone, not to mention the fact that it's probably the only released BBs all-Brian harmony song, it should definitely get a vocals-only treatment.
Also... how about some sessions of Murry doing his vocal overdubs on Be Here in the Morning? That must be fascinating to hear. Maybe really awkward to hear the studio chatter too, I wouldn't count on much of it being released unedited. Not to mention hearing some isolated Murry singing vocals, if any exist (not sure if he sung into a separate mic, Mike Love style, or if he got around a single mic with the other Boys). Isolated Murry vox is something I doubt anybody has ever even thought of hearing before.
Lots of possibilities for odd curious on this set.
On songs only sung by Brian, isn't "I'm Waiting For The Day" one? I always thought he's doing all the backing vocals for the song, I could be wrong though.

Just skimmed my way through some of the album, mostly listening to the BB remakes and I gotta say (and I know it's been said), but the production is awful and honestly unprofessional. There are obvious editing mistakes that shouldn't have been in the released album. In the intro harmonies of Kiss Me Baby you can clearly hear a pop where they spliced two takes together; in Good Vibes theres a weird digital sound that plays at when he sings "gentle word"; Warmth of The Sun has background noise/coughing before the harmonies come in, which isn't a big deal but it doesn't fit the production style on the rest of the album. These are what I've noticed when briefly listening for the first time; I'm sure there's others, too. I didn't expect much but I can't see being a musician and releasing an album full of easily fixed production mistakes.

Yeah I think he was either recording/practicing a piano part for what they were tracking, but then he goes into a quick divulgence, plunking the intro chords to Heroes and Villains (can you blame him?? That song is quintessential BW piano pounding)... to me it's the bass notes that confirm it's H&V. It's not the clearest, but it's there.
It's a step down from the original (just checked with my piano haha), og is Dflat and in this clip he starts at Bmaj. But it's got the same exact rhythm, bass melody, and progression as H&V. Just an interesting moment that caught my attention. I'd love to see BW just sit and play a piano when he thinks no one is watching/listening just to hear whatever comes to him in the moment.

One (very short) part of the video I thought was neat was the footage of Brian playing at the piano, probably not knowing he's being filmed right then. Anyone else notice at 55:16 he briefly plays the first verse of "Heroes And Villains"?? Very interesting considering this is in the mid-90s.

I love this! Nice arrangement--the piano has a really dream sound. I don't think you have to bury your vocals so low in the mix; they sound great. Are you familiar with Animal Collective at all? You could totally pull off their vocal style.
Thanks! I got the piano recently for free and it's a little detuned, about -26 cents, but I absolutely love its sound - reminds me of Brian's Chickering piano sound in the late 60s (obviously not AS good though). And yeah I listen to Animal Collective, I really like their sound! "No More Runnin" is one of my favorite songs
