1  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #19: Holland on: December 28, 2017, 11:01:53 PM
1. Leaving This Town - Not a popular opinion, I believe, but it's my favorite song from the album. It does have it's boring parts and it's not powerful as it could be, but it's still very soulful.
2. California Saga: California - Great harmonies. I love Brian's voice in it.
3. Sail On Sailor - Wonderful track. Very commercial. Blondie did a terrific job.
4. California Saga: Big Sur - I'm not usually a fan of Mike's vocals but I truly like his voice here. Doesn't have a big instrumental break, but it's great.
5. Only With You - I love this song, but I prefer Dennis' version.
6. The Trader - One of the best songs Carl ever wrote.
7. Steambot - Terrific.
8. Funky Pretty - I love some parts of this song, but the whole it's just okay.
9. California Saga: The Beaks Of Eagles - Not bad, just not their best.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2018 Tour Thread on: December 06, 2017, 07:38:20 PM
About the PS tour, I think it depends.

Brian seems to be very tired to play it over and over again, but, it's definitely more lucrative and gets more attention than anything else.
People outside the U.S are not very used to the show, and there are countries Brian never played or haven't played in years. I spoke with Darian last month, asked him if there's a possibility of gig in Brazil, and he said they're trying, but they don't have financial conditions at the moment. If they ever have the opportunity to play in Brazil again (Brian only played here in 2004, one city and only 4 Pet Sounds songs on the setlist), they would probably have to do the PS tour. I believe it would be the smartest decision, financially speaking.

But when it comes to the U.S, he should definitely change and decrease the number of shows, at least for now.
I think his next album will contain new songs, and maybe 2/3 oldies as a bonus.

COMMENT:  Done a couple of these.  A language coach is at the session. Words are written phonetically, that is, by the way they sound, and after a few rehearsals, it's done.  ~swd

Yes! I was actually talking about it today. Brazil definitely used it a lot in the 50s/60s/70s, almost every hit song at that time was written with this pattern.

In My Room (German Version) by The Beach Boys themselves. Really beautiful.

It's beautiful! But, I can't seem to stop laughing everytime they sing the chorus, it sounds they're saying "God's a lie".

Hi, OP, and welcome. :=)

This is the most comprehensive list of foreign-language versions you're likely to find:

Hello, and thank you!  Grin

That's amazing! I'll definitely have a look at it, thank you for sending me this.
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the "What are you listening to now?" thread on: December 06, 2017, 11:33:46 AM
I've been listening a lot of The Peanut Butter Conspiracy and Grapefruit.
There's a song by Grapefruit called "Lullaby" which was written by Lennon/McCartney for Sgt. Peppers, and originally called Circus Sgt. Peppers... Great stuff, it would be amazing to hear The Beatles' version of it, unfortunately I believe they never recorded it.
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Weezer on: December 06, 2017, 11:24:37 AM
Catchy song, I liked it! Wouldn't compare to Weezer's early stuff, though. Specially the first two albums, which are great.

I read Brian's writing an answer song to Rivers, called "I'm a Weezer", but I don't know if that's true.
8  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Weezer on: December 06, 2017, 11:18:06 AM
Rivers is and has long been a huge Brian Wilson fan.

The first thing he did with his advance money when Weezer got signed was buy the Good Vibrations box set.  I know because I was there when he brought it home.  He also bought SUNFLOWER on my recommendation (and didn't like it unfortunately).

Such a cool story! Shame about Sunflower, though.

Day By Day by The Four Freshmen! And I don't know why, but I'm always thinking about how beautiful Brian would sound singing Angel Baby by Rosie & The Originals, put that with a new arrangement and harmonies and you'll get heaven.

And definitely agree with you about the Everlys. Songs Our Daddy Taught Us is one of my favourite albums of all time.

This a version of Surfin' USA made by a Brazilian duo called Juba & Lula, in 1988. The language is Portuguese.
How bad is it?

Listening to it now, great stuff! Congratulations!

Now that you mentioned, some tracks can be seen as modular. Johnny Carson, Airplane... However, for me it's always been adult version of Pet Sounds. Adult yet child, whereas PS was between those two, young adult.

Agreed. I’ve seen Pet Sounds as the start of a series of albums about Brian’s life:

Pet Sounds - young love
Friends - young adult, has children, starts real life
Love You - 10 years into parenthood but nostalgic about the past
No Pier Pressure - old man, trying to recapture youth with young artists, ends it with a “last song”

I feel like these are 4 of Brian’s most personal albums. Most other albums he did were for something else other than himself, but these four feel like Brian opens up his inner most thoughts, no matter how ridiculous, and shares them with the world.

Good observation!

Legend.

Can't wait to read Dreamer: The Making of Pacific Ocean Blue.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine Solo Concert Series on: December 05, 2017, 09:36:41 PM
He probably won't be coming to Brazil with this tour, so, I can only wish a great concert for the people who's able to attend.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Noel Gallagher hates Brian Wilson on: December 05, 2017, 09:29:14 PM
If Noel Gallagher could just hold Brian's toilet paper, would probably be the closest he'll ever get to something truly good.

This guy has a pretty mediocre career, to say the least. You could save just a few Oasis songs now and then, but that's all. Haven't heard his new album yet, but I'm not sure I want to. He needs to have some classes on how to behave in public and respect other people's work.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Noel Gallagher hates Brian Wilson on: December 05, 2017, 09:08:34 PM
My friend studies at music university in Bristol. He recently had a guest speaker who was something to do with promotion at one of the major record labels (I forget exactly what he did).

I had mentioned to my friend a couple of years back that Noel always seems to crawl out of the woodwork and start relentlessly and rather pathetically slagging people off just as his album is about to drop. Not just any people though, it always seems to be the really big stars (remember the beef he had with Ed Sheeran when good old Ed sold about about 30 nights at Wembley or something ridiculous).

Anyway, my friend went to this talk, and he told me afterwards that there was actually something too this. The guy doing the talk told them that Noel has a list of names given to him by his promoter whenever he has a new album coming out. These names are the top 10 biggest artists at that time. He puts the list on his fridge, and ticks them off every time he slags them off on Twitter or whatever.

Sounds almost too bizarre to not be true. Insecure and pathetic. We can take comfort in the fact that despite having an incredible amount of great gossip and potential juicy dirty details Brian could use as a means of selling his records, he has never stopped that low in 50 years, and I’m sure he never will, because he has class. Even when he was 20 stone, trying to give cocaine to his kids, he still had more class than Noel ever has or will have.

But anyway, just thought that was an interesting point to share with you all!

This is just pathetic... And, it's actually funny, since he always stated that he repudiates people who benefit from "scandalous news" to sell records. It's quite the point and probably true, but a long time ago he already said he thought The Beach Boys is the most overrated band of all time... So, I believe he brought it up now just to get some kind of buzz over his new album, but truly thinks Brian Wilson's work is rubbish.

I would say Surf's Up. So many different layers combined in one song.

21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Van Dyke Parks contribute to the arrangements on Smile? on: August 13, 2017, 02:49:13 AM
I'm pretty sure he did but never got credit for it. You can hear the same Smile pattern on his Song Cycle album.
