Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Welcome thread

Hi, I'm new here. Came to enjoy and maybe occasionally post. It's hard to find folks in person who share my interest in the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson, especially being a 30-something female in Northern Appalachia, so I'm grateful a board like this exists. Welcome! I'm a 30-something female in Cordoba, Argentina, a city where the only BB songs ever played on the radio are Kokomo and I Get Around. I'm also grateful for this and other boards.

2. May and Taylor's pre Queen band was called "Smile", formed in 1968. We all know Pet Sounds was a much bigger sensation in the UK and Europe, and that the BB retained a high degree of popularity well into the early 70s on that side of the pond. We also know that Smile was hyped up in the press and people were aware of its potential forthcoming existence in 1967. The Smile legend was cemented before it never even came out. So people in the UK would have known about it. 3. There are a few press photos of their band Smile that feature them holding cutout smiles over their mouths ( https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c3/Smile_band.jpg). Could they have possibly seen one of the known existing cover slicks for the unreleased duophonic/stereo copies of the Smile jacket? Highly doubt that BUT you never really know. The original cover slick features the store front with smiles for sale, the one behind the man on the left looks exactly like the ones in the band photos ( https://recordmecca.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Screen-Shot-2015-03-23-at-5.14.46-PM.png). More wild theory than real speculation. Still fun to think about! Tim Staffell, founding member of Smile, talked about this in his recent reddit Q&A: Q: Hey Tim. You mentioned in another reply that Van Dyke Parks was an influence for you - did the unfinished Beach Boys album which he co-wrote have any part in the choosing of ‘Smile’ as a band name? [...] A: Interesting Question, and thanks for the kind words... funnily enough the Smile name evolved independently of the Brian Wilson classic... My introduction to Van Dyke was his two superb albums 'Discover America' and 'Clang of the Yankee Reaper' and of course his production work... [...]

Carl was with Dennis at the Queen concert. I believe it was in Mike's book. Dennis was drunk and the members of Queen didn't want to meet him. I think it was 75 or 77.
Taylor Hawkins in Ken Sharp's new Dennis/POB book (page 286) " Roger Taylor from Queen...told me a great story. He was coming off stage at the Forum in L.A after a Queen show in1977 and this homeless-looking guy jumped all over him. Security grabbed him and he realised it's f***in' Dennis. He had the big beard and was probably wearing flip-flops. Just classic Dennis. Roger said they sat around and had a couple of drinks and spoke for 30 - 45 minutes and said he was lovely. He said he was so complimentary of the show and loved Queen and loved their harmonies. He said he was so sweet to him". Aww, my two favorite drummers together

2Silken - girl, it goes both ways, I should ask the same question - why people at PS care so much for what people say at Smiley? They too reference this board. If they can, surely we too, no? I think everybody's allowed to do that? Really, Silken, you asked really weird question.
You're right, I should ask the same question there. There isn't a "Smiley Smile Forum" at PSF, so the "hatred" is more evident here, that's why I posted the question in this thread. Well, you can garner an idea from their posts about us when they make them...we all hate mike love, this board is too negative, etc. I hope my answer to your initial question (pages ago) made sense. I read your answer and it makes sense but I still don't understand why people (by "people" I mean some PSF members and some SS members) make such a big deal about things that happen on an internet forum. I have more serious things to worry about.

In different PS news, I'd been meaning to say this - in which way does "Like" feature work? Many times I didn't get which bit, which paragraph, sentence some poster "liked" in smb. else's post. F.ex., some poster writes 3 different things about 3 different issues or uses the phrase that usually contradicts the previous statement - "That said, ...". Is "liking" in this regard agreeing with "That said" onwards or before it? It's such blur, this whole "Like" trend. I figured people like what they agree with? Seems like there is few other reasons to "Like" post. Maybe people should stop being super-humble & "like" posts only written by them. In fact, think I'd seen smb. did "like" his/her post(s). I use the "Like" button when I like (or agree with) the entire post. Otherwise I quote the bit I like or agree with and make some comment about it.

I admit, I don't always know what Van Dyke is talking about, but what is this exchange?
Twitter user named Brad to VDP: Dude, you helped write SMiLE. VDP: He helped me write "Smile". What a dude'll do. Brad, you goofin' me, right?
The conversation didn't end there. This Brad guy wrote: "Sorry. I don’t mean to take anything away from anyone else. I just think of your involvement with SMILE as a great moment in rock history." VDP replied that he wishes he gets a fee every time he (Brian) performs it (Smile), but he then deleted the tweet, that's why I can't quote the exact words. He sounded quite resentful.

2 the OP & Silken: Why you laugh? Don't you like Al? This whole making fun of Al isn't cool.
I think it's more poking a little fun at a Beach Boys version of the (in)famous "Paul McCartney is Dead" hoax. Why make Al the target of these tasteless jokes? Why not Bruce? He's juuust replacement, obviously inferior BB than everybody else - by behavior, vocals etc. Make fun of the squarest replacement BB. Al's the 2nd best vocalist in the band, great-looking, real class act yet you laugh at him? Do any of you like &/ or respect him? Waiting for everybody who contributed here, including the OP & Silken, to answer this easy question. You remind me of Sheldon Cooper. I love and respect Al. This is just humor. Read KDS's, JK's and Hickory Violet Part IV's replies, maybe you'll understand why we find this thread funny.

I'm currently obsessed with "The way I feel inside". I discovered Odessey and Oracle by chance when I was first getting into the Beach Boys. The album cover caught my eye so I had to listen to it. At first I thought "this is good but it sounds like a BB copy". Months later I listened to it again and I realised that not only it wasn't a BB copy but also it was really, really good. I don't want to say it's better than Pet Sounds because I'm afraid of being banned, but well, to me it is. And Colin Blunstone, what a beautiful voice (his solo work is a bit boring and very few songs stand out but I usually put it as background music just to hear his soothing voice).
