Assuming this hasn't been posted here yet, our member jiggy22 has uploaded the album First Love, Mike Love's unreleased solo album from 1978, on Youtube in higher quality than what widely circulates.

I don't think they could actually purse these non-official releases, because, uh, they seem to be completely legal in Japan.

I'm no expert on domestic copyright law, but it seems any recordings recorded before 1968 are now out of copyright here.

They're even selling non-official copies of Beatles' bootlegs on stores like Amazon (and other "legitimate" record stores) and getting away with it.

I wonder if any of the Chaplin-Fattar songs recorded for The Beach Boys (Hold On Dear Brother, Here She Comes, Leaving This Town, Hard Time) has anything in common with the tracks on 2nd Brother album.

COMMENT to Wata:  I'm sorry, I do not know.

Sure. Thanks for answering my question, Mr. Desper!

I looked up some information on google, and found this site: http://www.thekinseyreport.com/the%20flames.htm

It lists three more songs, "I'm a Man", "Hello", "Everybody" as outtakes from The Flames' 2nd LP, along with the mention on a bootleg tape with them performing songs like I've Got a Feeling and Gimme Shelter on stage.

12 Sides of Summer is far from the best, but trust me. It's not as bad as Summer In Paradise.

SIP is the nadir of the entire BB's discography; 12 Side of Summer, on the other hand, is nice if slightly forgettable listen with far more solid song selection and production compared to SIP. Songs like "Rockaway Beach" and "Here Comes the Sun" were pleasant surprise for me.

Saw this uploaded on Youtube. FAR better sound quality than what's been circulated before:

Listening to it again, it's actually better than I had thought it to be.
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 12 Side of Summer - Review on: July 19, 2019, 10:30:49 PM
I started listening to the album as soon as it was released on iTunes at midnight. I might well be among the first to listen to it (outside of the insiders)  :D

Overall, while I don't prefer it to Unleash The Love (Disc 1) or Reason for The Season (first seven songs), the album is a cooling, fun listen. It's refreshing to listen to Mike rocks hard on tracks like "Summertime Blues" and "Rockaway Beach", and croon in his mellow voice on "Here Comes The Sun" and "The Girl from Ipanema". The covers of BB songs are weaker in comparison, but they're still listenable unlike some of Mike's past output (i.e. Unleash the Love Disc 2 & Summer In Paradise). I thought the arrangement of "Surfin' Safari" was very novel.

"Here Comes The Sun" and "Rockaway Beach" are easily the highlights, with the former noted for its bossa nova arrangement. It's no That Lucky Old Sun, but I appreciate Mike's overall efforts here.

Mike's been prolific lately - wonder how his next record turns out to be.
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1965 Copyright (Today!/Summer Days) on: May 12, 2019, 07:40:12 PM
This has probably been covered at some point but does anyone know why there was never sessions and outtakes released for the 1965 copyright extension from both Today! and Summer Days? Or was there and I somehow missed it?

Would have been great to have things like the alternate lyrics version of Please Let Me Wonder with Mike on lead plus backing tracks like “In the Back of My Mind”.
In a Q&A session taken place last January(http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=26378.0), Mark Linnett clarified that they had proposed 1965 copyright extension release to Capitol, but had no idea whether they would actually come out.

71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why does spotify keep screwing with the Beach Boys material? on: April 12, 2019, 12:57:10 AM
Unless someone here has worked on the IT/back end at Spotify, it's probably impossible to know exactly why some tracks or albums are messed up in one way or another.

I know there are fans who own all of the albums who also simply like to use Spotify or other services.

But for anyone who *doesn't* actually own all the albums, the occasionally (or often) wonky elements of these streaming services is the perfect reason to actually snag physical (or digital) copies of all the albums and rip to a portable or other device (or actually listen to the CD itself, crazy as it sounds!).

This isn't an "embrace old technology, not new!" rant, this is more of a "streaming services can't be relied upon in perpetuity, so if you actually like the Beach Boys, make sure you own all the albums and then you'll never have to worry" sort of situation.
I agree. Over in Japan, a musician was arrested back in March for drug use, and since then all the stuff he's involved has been taken off from any streaming services, making it impossible to listen to his music online in a legal way.

It seems buying a copy is still a wiser way than to rely solely on streaming services, when it comes to keep the music you love at your own hand.
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why does spotify keep screwing with the Beach Boys material? on: April 11, 2019, 01:50:47 AM
Sorry to hear this is happening... I haven't had any problems with Apple Music, other than Spirit Of America vanishing a few months ago.

Apple Music has The Pet Sounds Sessions?
Yes they do, in its entirety at least in my region.

Spotify messing with Beach Boys material was one of the reasons I quit subscription to Spotify and switched to Apple Music a while ago - it seems like they're doing really sloopy job, as they never got back when I reported them that the order of Hawthorne CA tracks are completely wrong.
