Maybe I'm missing the point--or a point--but honestly I could live with Surfin' Safari thru Surf's Up.

Come to think of it, I sorta do....
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: That 'Country Air' wiggly organ...... on: October 30, 2016, 01:24:59 PM
What's the story with that wiggly distortion? Did the bumble bee from the Wild Honey stained glass window come to life and fall into the organ?

If that's the case, then I guess the bee is also stuck in the piano for the entirety of "Here Comes the Night"

I've heard that bee in at least one section of "Can't Wait Too Long".  Apparently a part done during the Wild Honey sessions?

4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How much of Smile '67 would have been (in your judgment) instrumental? on: August 30, 2016, 03:35:09 PM
Apologies if this is an old or stupid question.

Most of the BBs' '60s albums had at least one instrumental. The exceptions are LDC, Christmas, Today, Party, and WH -- 5 out of 15, and two to three of those are arguably stopgaps, not "proper" albums. Notably, Both Pet Sounds and Summer Days had had instrumentals. Thus, one might assume that having an instrumental track or tracks to include would have been "expected" by Brian and/or the group for any given album as it was being planned and recorded.

Do you believe that Smile '66/'67 was expected to have an instrumental track or tracks in this way? And, if so, which ones?

Not a stupid question at all, but a very good one.  And subject to quite a bit of debate since no one will ever know exactly what Brian's intentions were in '66-'67.

First of all, it could be said that perhaps NO instrumentals were originally intended for Pet Sounds.  Pet Sounds (the song) was originally written as Run James Run, a soundtrack instrumental meant to be submitted for a James Bond movie.  Had this scenario actually played out, it's very unlikely Brian would have included the song on a Beach Boys record.

Let's Go Away for Awhile reportedly had vocals written for it, but admittedly I don't know the full story on that one.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think Brian ever felt like any of the albums absolutely HAD to have an instrumental or two on it.

That said, I think it's safe to assume that Mrs. O'Leary's Cow would have been a prominent instrumental, whether or not Brian intended to overdub the wordless vocal part.  I still consider it an instrumental either way.

We can only speculate that one or more of the other 'Elements' may have been instrumental, but we'll never know for sure, since that suite is incomplete.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does anyone else prefer the early version of Good Vibrations? on: August 21, 2016, 08:58:43 AM
Never cared for the early version.  The lyrics strike me as a bit awkward and the vocal is pretty rough.  I think it's perfect the way it was released (and apparently so did the record buying public).
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The many punishments of Murry Wilson on: August 07, 2016, 03:35:20 PM
Murry was the worst! He:

--made Brian stay in his room

--sold Brian's surfboard

--cut off all Brian's hair in his sleep

--tacked up boards on Brian's window (gosh it's dark!)

--jerked Brian's phone right out of the wall

--(apparently with an accomplice...maybe Audree?) gave Brian breadcrumbs and a little glass of water while they ate steak

--took Brian's radio and used it in his own room

I bought this book toward the end of last year (at a discount), and I can only echo what others are saying here.  Very attractive volume with many really good photos and a nice layout.  Looks good on my coffee table!

The (mis)information is pretty bad, even the most casual fan might catch some of the errors.  Not a good reference book, but nice to have around for the photos.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is your favorite Beach Boys Album and Song at the moment? on: July 18, 2016, 06:50:21 PM
Album: Sunflower (no explanation needed)
Song: All I Wanna Do--a song that never fails to completely engulf me in its sonic brilliance.  If I ever get married again I will probably not have this played at the wedding for that very reason!  LOL  "Do you take this woman....hey, I said, do you take.....hello?"

Seriously, the song, performance, and production are amazing.

Why do I love this kinda talk about the Beach Boys? Never tire of this stuff!

Thank you for the positive review there, gxios (and other posters as well).  When I first got into this thread I started to sweat a little as I had recently stuck another $30 on my credit card in hopes of adding the be-all end-all sacd of my close-second favorite BBs album, to my collection.  The thought of being underwhelmed when it arrives is something I don't want to consider, as I patiently stare out my front window at my mailbox at around 11:00 every day this week!  Smiley

Ok, now this has me wondering....I thought the 2012 sounded ok, at least initially.  But then a lot of people were grumbling that the 2012 sounded a little shrill in the high end...to the point of distortion and other unpleasantness in the treble region.   I at least felt it was an improvement over the Sunflower/Surf's Up twofer, which sounded very flat and rolled off on the highs and lows.

I've been very happy with the SACDs thus far, and I have been anticipating that Sunflower in this set will not be a letdown.

But here we are.  A remix?  Are you sure?

Well, I've got one on it's way to me as we speak.  In a few days I will know for sure.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 14 Beach Boys albums coming to vinyl/SACD on: July 08, 2016, 04:57:13 PM
Finally got my Holland album in the mail.  Only took a year to receive it!   Razz  Just gave it a spot-listen in the SACD player and so far so good.  Interestingly, "We Got Love" (studio version) is present and accounted for but there is no mention of it anywhere in the liner notes or in the packaging.

You confused me.  When you said "album" I thought you meant vinyl.  But anyway, hows the sound?

One benefit is now all of the members who disrespected this board, people on this board, and ignored or disregarded the rules of this board repeatedly and were banned have been welcomed with open arms at another forum. So anyone who wants to whitewash or scrub down the past 10 years of history that led to whatever bans were issued and act like none of it happened, you know the address.

I'd skipped it, so far, other than to look once at the beginning and see who the members were.  "Guaranteed no trolls, f*ckwits and sh*tweasels" - that's hilarious, given the founding members of that place.  I'm still waiting for that personal invitation to join that others on SS were getting, though.  LOL

I understand they've been on their good behavior so far to attract new members.  I remain - shall we say - skeptical?

Well, I just read that link posted here just to see what the reference was and there I was, on that adorable board.  Good behavior?  Of course not, just ban anyone who disagrees.  Pathetic.

You mean Andrew Doe, John Manning, and Alan Smith never sent you an invite among all the invites they sent? Well, I'm shocked and stunned!  Grin

Why do folks think they need an invite to join the board?  I'm only asking because it keeps getting brought up here and seems to be an issue.

That explains. Rmbr I said in the "Bubs" & Judd thread that I find the expletives boring? Ditto with drugs. I HATE DRUG REFS. If you all find it funny - cool. To me, it's boring. & I like my interpretation, thanks.

& btw, fyi, the date in Russia goes day/month not vice versa. Same as the UK date. The US stuff reads very bizarre, beyond basic understanding. I don't get it & will not get used to it, jus' like I find 2 dashes-4 dashes (-- or ----) extremely weird & stupid-looking & Oxford comma. JMHO.

I agree it can be pretty offputting.  Like when someone randomly abbreviates words when they post...... Shocked

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: All I Wanna Do: Appreciation on: May 25, 2016, 05:20:54 PM
And yet All I Wanna Do was left off both Good Vibrations and Made in California box sets! In fact, it's never appeared on an best-of, ever... Yet it's such an obvious highlight of the album and the era.

I never understood that either.

I'd have swapped out Cool Cool Water for All I Wanna Do on the Warmth of the Sun compilation.

I picked Cool Cool Water since it's a fellow Sunflower track.

Disclaimer:
My wanting to swap out Cool Cool Water for another song on a Beach Boys compilation is in no way disrespecting the song Cool Cool Water.

No disclaimer necessary, since that single version of CCW was butcher-edited

the SACD's look really well packaged from images online.  Can't justify spendin' the dough on these yet after rebuying the mono/stereo releases from a few years back.  The SACD's no doubt are the better product, but gee, how many copies of surfer girl or little deuce coupe draws the line?....

The differences in sound quality between the 2012 releases (I'm assuming that's what you're referring to) and the SACDs are night and day.  The 2012's sound very shrill and brittle to me, particularly the stereo portions.  The SACDs are probably the best these are ever going to sound on cd.  Not perfect, but very enjoyable.

The packaging is a huge difference as well.  The thin, flimsy covers of the 2012's are guaranteed to scuff up the cds in a short amount of time (and I hate eco-packs), while the SACD packaging is much more durable and friendly to the discs.

I'm not made of money, so I have made the decision to buy only certain ones.  When the next batch comes out (hopefully soon) I will certainly buy Sunflower right off, and then I'll see how I feel about the others at that time.

The only SACD I'm really on the fence about is Pet Sounds.  I already have the MFSL SACD of it and I think it sounds wonderful, but I have seen comments from some people that the AP is even better.  Thoughts, anyone?

I just want to say I'm very impressed with your analysis. In totality, I also never liked Smiley Smile or Smile Redux though I always loved Wonderful with Carl's vocals and With Me Tonight. Surfs Up is incredible.

Pet Sounds is the masterpiece, fully realized.

Sunflower is the masterpiece.
