1  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Do you want this Beach Boy related stuff? on: January 08, 2008, 05:28:56 AM
You can always pop around to my place for an egg sandwich anytime you like!

I'm going off topic here, sorry for that, just wanted to say that it's great to see another Joe Meek fan here!  High Five

2  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Do you want this Beach Boy related stuff? on: January 07, 2008, 07:07:28 PM
Hi there!

I have the following items available:

"The Smile File" Dwight Cavanagh. Sept 95.   Interesting book of analysis of Smile related stuff (recording sessions etc) A good read.

Beach Boy Australia Magazines 43, 44, 46, ,47/48 (damaged), 49 (stained), 50/51. These magazines are small A5 size and were released in 95 or so. Pretty good articles on various things like the Honeys, Orange Crate Art (released around the time).

I don't really want to make any money on these guys, just $10 to cover postage and packing costs to get them to someone (ie a new fan etc.)  who may appreciate them! :-)  Paypal is preferred.

Please message me if interested!

Oh, hands down it's ALFIE.

 It's Burt's favorite too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hUhtLYhlhE

Cilla Black's performance on this clip is spellbinding (her's is my favorite version of this song by far)

Total magic!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faityurE10I

If you haven't seen these yet, spend a few minutes and do it now... so worth it.

The others? Where to begin!!?

A group of 50 year olds singing early Beatles covers through their nose while someone kept beatin a cowbell. They were just a local band called ED.

Do you have a tape of this performance? I'd like to hear it!  Afro

Darn, I don't feel special anymore. Oh well.

I have a newfound love for Don Grady's songwriting skills. Junk Maker Shoppe is an amazing song (I especially love the line "there are colorful trinkets that have no pride"). The solo bonus tracks on the CD are pretty good, too. Great lyrics.

Smashing good number!

I feel if we take an auto-backlash approch to any "inspired by Beach Boys/Beatles/Brian Wilson" bands, we are missing out on some music which is good and essentially continuing on in the same vein. Mind you, I know that there are a few bands who now use that tag that  are definitely a bit wanky and elitist. You just have to be in tune to the ones who really mean it and bypass the ones that use it as hipster brownie points. If you listen to the actual music you can usually pick it.

I like the Heavy Blinkers because their music is sincere and heartfelt, and they write good tunes. They are a real indy band,  not "cool" wannabes. I think they are on the right track! The fact they made such a classic, well produced album (The night and I are still so young) on what would of been a laughable budget is commendable, almost like "Gideon Gaye" by the High Llamas.

Has anyone ever noticed that towards the end of How Can I Be Down, someone says "keep recording"? This is the first time I've found something like this on my own, I feel special

I think it was mentioned in the liner notes by one of the members of the band... something about how he was bummed out because that bit was left in there , otherwise it would be a "perfect' album (or something like that)

Personally, I am glad they kept recording!

That goes for all these bands that claim to be Beach Boys and Beatles influenced. They suck.

That will be a LOT of bands then!

Thanks for the BC Camplight tip! I will check them out!

I love Heavy Blinkers... I love "The night and I are still so young".... great album.
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Jack White makes song for COKE commercial. on: April 16, 2006, 05:11:23 PM
Jack White is a breath of fresh air, out of everyone in the music business, he's one of the few that are still making music for ALL the right reasons, in my opinion.

"Here's the deal, folks. You do a commercial - you're off the artistic roll call, forever. End of story. Okay? You're another whore at the captialist gang bang and if you do a commercial, there's a price on your head. Everything you say is suspect and every word that comes out of your mouth is now like a turd falling into my drink." - Bill Hicks

I would say if Mediamonkey is too confusing, try one of the other suggestions, either Nero or Windows media player. I think I used Nero last time to level up a bunch of tracks and it did an ok job.

Just try a few different programs till you find one which does the job as you wish, there has got to be a hassle free solution!
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Consistant Volume on Mix CD's on: January 31, 2006, 04:57:46 AM
Just checking my version of Windows Media Player (Version 10)... it too has a music leveling option, it's a little bit hard to find....

  • Go to the main interface, then click on the BURN tab.
  • Two columns will be shown, look above the right column, right hand corner... you should be able to see 4 icons, the first looks like a small piece of paper with a tick on it. This is for burning properties. Click on it.
  • Then click on the "Quality" tab of the window that opens... you should see a "Apply volume leveling to music when it is burned" option, make sure the tickbox is ticked.

No problems, tell me how it goes!

Also, you may want to try Nero Express 6, it has a "Normilze all audio files" checkbox when you select which tracks to burn. It could do the trick also!

Lots of programs have this feature.

I just checked my version of MediaMonkey, and it will automatically level all audio on the fly as it is burning.

You can get it here., demo version burns at 4x speed but you could at least check to see if it does what you want. The other plus is, unlike the majority of other jukebox/media playing software available, it is NOT a resource hog, and has a Winamp 2.x style player as the default (or you can point it to your player of choice). Great program.

I love MONTY ON THE RUN!

Rob Hubbard is the Brian Wilson of video game music! Wink

Quote
TURN THE MUSIC UP

One of the most striking features of Monty on the Run is its funky bop, I mean listen and dig that groove baby. Having had quite an earful (monitors at full volume) ZZAP! thought it was high time Commodore synth musicians received some acclaim, so Jaz 'my Walkman is so-o-o loud' Rignall gave Rob Hubbard, composer of the Monty music a
bell . . .

Rob Hubbard is thirty years old and has been in the music biz since he left school. After hearing the music from Activision's Master of the Lamps and Rock 'n' BoIt he felt inspired enough to start experimenting with the 64's SID chip and consequently connected his black and white monitor to his hi-fi and started to program his own music utility. When asked whether he used any professional utility he said that he felt that most of the utilities available are very limited with the sounds you can create. His own utility has been perfected over the last four months and he constantly makes changes to it so he can customize sounds and incorporate them into his music.

Some of his early work includes the music to Mastertronic's Action Biker, Confusion and Thing on a Spring. Monty he considers as one of his best pieces to date but thinks the new piece of music he's composing for Adventure International is going to be a lot better, complete with blue grass banjoes, fiddles and a drunken violin.

Most of his music is sketched out on an old Casio MT3O synth, but also has a Casio DX7 which he says is a lot better. Once the tune has been worked out it's over to the 64 to start experimenting. During some tinkering he's even accidentally stumbled upon some of the voices used in Monty, although something like the drum sounds (trying to emulate a Simmonds drum sound) took two weeks to perfect.

He feels that he's getting near to the limits of the 64 sound chip and also finds the three channels rather limiting . . . never mind, perhaps the new Commodore Amiga with it's eight-channel stereo sound will keep him happily making computer music for a few more years to come!

Past present and future - Shangri-las

Rock Lobster - B-52s

Oh, and Nillson's THE POINT

Thank you, Joe.

No problems!

Actually - "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking heads could go on the narration list. I always feel like David Byrne is narrating that track.

(currently enjoying the live brilliance that is "The name of this band is Talking heads")

One of my favorite punk tracks I love is a song by the FEEDERZ regarding doing something really naughty to Jesus... can't meantion the title here but its a classic.
Where'd you hear that, the "Let Them Eat Jellybeans" comp? That's got some good stuff on it.

Yeah.. and what a great comp it be! The Jokes on you, Corporate food, Isotope soap (!!!)

Actually I got it wrong - the Feederz song is about Jesus doing something to you, not the other way around. Do a google search for Feederz and their website has all that first album available as mp3 downloads... very punk and very cool. The lead singer went on to work for Microsoft... very interesting!

Also, Wire.

Wire are so totally underated.

So are Magazine
22  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Music downloading creates listener apathy on: January 12, 2006, 09:45:40 PM
I dont really care if my music is for free or not.... either I like it or I don't - money has nothing to do with it.

I have gotten lots of pleasure out of 50 cent bargin bin records in an Opportunity shop, as much as I have from my expensive box sets of CDs.

There are free mp3s that I listen to constantly (creative commons stuff too) and there are albums/CDs that cost me money but I never listen to.
23  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Punk Appreciation Thread on: January 12, 2006, 06:33:46 PM
I have always loved the ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE...... "So what" is a classic punk song with deep, meaningful lyrics.

Dead Kennedies first album

Black Flag's first album (but more technically the creation of hardcore)

THE FALL

Australia's RADIO BIRDMAN

Australia's THE SAINTS "I'm Stranded"

One of my favorite punk tracks I love is a song by the FEEDERZ regarding doing something really naughty to Jesus... can't meantion the title here but its a classic.

THAT is real punk music, unlike the poseuring corporate "punk" of today. I can't believe they call it "punk" too, sacrilidge!
