Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?

This comment will probably be misunderstood and I might get some flak for it, but I'll say it anyway. Pet Sounds is overrated, in that it makes albums like Friends, Sunflower, and Wild Honey underrated.
I agree, and a few people have said this now. It is over rated when compared to the rest of the Beach Boys catalogue. I truly think Brian really reached his zenith as a songwriter around the Smile to Friends period, and stayed on top of his game through the early 70s.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Those God Only Knows 'flute trills'

Does anyone else agree that the arrangement and positioning of those few seconds of harmonised God Only Knows flute trills (as I call them) at 1:46 are the finest moments of music by anyone ever? Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Beatles
Better than anything the last lot on your list did, certainly, but the others? I know you were being tongue in cheek. Try Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Good enough place to start.

Whenever I read these posts about Smiley Smile, I still wonder if my copy is defective.
It's definitely one of the more divisive BB albums, yes. And the funny thing is I can understand why people may not care for it much. It may not be polished like Smile, but in terms of musicality I feel it surpasses it on so many levels. We take that version of H&V for granted now, but it's just fantastic. What structure. And its a purely personal and subjective thing, but no other album creates such a mood for me as Smiley. So to me it's incredibly cohesive. I don't think there was any accident about that. Brian was going for a certain vibe, it even strangely works having Good Vibrations on there. Its like nature has reclaimed an abandoned city, with little bits of the Smile structure poking through the foliage. Brian wore so many hats, there are so many aspects of his music to be in love with. Aren't we lucky?

I could write a thesis on how the Smiley version of Wind Chimes epitomises everything that is great about Brian Wilson the composer.
The harmony, chord progression and overall structure are musical perfection to my ears.
The organic feel of the performance, and the haunting vocals are mesmerising.
My most favourite piece of 20th century music by far,
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

I'm really starting to believe that Mike comes out with this stuff with the sole intention of winding people up. If the rumours are true he reads this board with his OJ in the morning.
I'll bet he was the kind of child who spent hours torturing ants in his garden.

"Deirdre" is one of the greatest BBs songs
'Deirdre' is a wonderful song, with superb vox from Bruce and cutting edge instrumentation. It's always been a favourtie of mine from Sunflower. Deidre is an old ladies name here in the UK. Like Ethel or Edith. I always imagine he's singing about his Gran. Lots of people love Deidre, and the way she overcooks her cauliflower in the pressure cooker, one, two, three and I'm knitting with Deidre.

Request to Adult Child. My aging eyes can't read light-colored text on dark backgrounds easily, so I use an alternate theme for this site which has black text on a yellowish background.
What that means is that I can't read posts in yellow or pink text, due to a lack of contrast. So if you could avoid using those two colors in your BB history listings, it would be very helpful for those of us who use different themes. Thanks in advance.
Sorry to tell you Emdeeh but Adult Child was aware of this and has, for some time been using these colours to post insulting things about you. Personally I didnt believe any of it, especially not the sheep one.

Leetwall, what Durrie Parks acetated and titbits do you have? Wasn't you that bought them was it? Seriously, have they been booted? What about the H&V assembly containing Great Shape? I'm sure I'd have heard about it if that had surfaced. By the way, absolutely loved the Child insert into the late piano version of Wonderful you did. Definitely one of those YES! moments.

This is amazing, but it's funny how 'With a Little Help' blew his mind when he could probably write a better song than that in his sleep. Or he could've back in the 60s.
Don't underestimate the simple but timeless quality and profound musical intelligence behind that tune. Can you give us more detail on the profound musical inteligence? What sets this song apart from others? I'm always up for some deep analysis of form.

I'm looking for the positives here.
Back in the late 80s I was literally the only Beach Boys fan for miles around. You couldn't get more uncool.
I loved it, they were mine and mine alone. Everone else hated them.
It'll be quite nice to be back in that position.
Why is it a *good* or *nice* thing for any fan to have to worry about what people in, say, San Francisco, might think of someone who walks down the street with a Beach Boys logo shirt on January 21? Why does it have to be "on them" if they are pissed to see that shirt? I don't want to offend someone who has every right to be offended by the brand name if they play the election. I'm an empath; I give a f***. It's not a nice thing at all. I was being facetious, sorry. I think my point was I never became a BB fan because of the bands reputation. And I did enjoy the kudos of the Beach Boys being my thing. It's always been about the music. But totally agree about this inaugaration not being a good thing, I just mean that it won't affect my enjoyment of their music. I like a bit of Richard Wagner if I'm in the mood, and I can seperate his music from the Nazi association. I certainly wouldn't wear a Bayreuth Festival T shirt in Israel though, for the same reasons as you. Anyhow, the last thing I want to do is offend anyone, especially you, CD as I enjoy your posts, so apologies in advance if I have.
