Most underrated?
Solar System.
I can get down with this. By "Underrated" we're going for stuff that doesn't usually get mentioned as good, and some of the stuff on "Love you" while it's quirky and weird, if you listen those are some really genius songs. Solar System is one, also I'll bet he's nice, or Airplane. Airplane is brilliant, it's just all so out of the box that people poo poo it. "Over the city in an airplane I can see everything below The houses they look so tiny The cars look like dots We've only got fifteen minutes to go The clouds in the sky caress my mind so tenderly The sun shines down on the great big beautiful scene The sound of the engine fills my ears up I'm hopin' this rainy weather clears up My lover is waiting at the airport Soon she'll be kissing me hello The woman sitting next to me tells me 'bout her guy And I tell her all about you and I" It's brilliant. Most songwriters would kill to be able to write like that.

This sounds great all around. Only thing it's missing is the Beach Boys harmonies behind it!
Paul McCartney recorded an album called "Run Devil Run" in the 90's shortly after Linda passed away, it was just all throwback rockabilly stuff, didn't take long to do. It was great.
David should hook up with Al and Brian and record an album like that, just stuff like this that rocks and gets back to their early roots. It'd be amazing!

It's alright, but it's a bit too straight forward for me. Should have had somebody cook it up a little more, make it a little more interesting.
What's always surprised me about Mike is that nobody like one of these cool-ass hipster music legends has worked with him and made him actually as good as he's always had the potential to be. Neil Young. Jeff Lynne. Don Was. One of those type of mo'fos who are super talented and like working with everybody.... get one of those guys to lock themselves in a room with Mike (lol) and record an artsy fartsy album with him. It would probably be the greatest sh*t ever recorded. Push him towards stuff like Big Sur or All I wanna do, etc.
I'm sure some have offered over the years but he must just be completely against it. You'd think eventually he would have realized that since Brian was so good at all that stuff, after Brian was unavailable... oh, I don't know, how about get somebody outside to write with you and produce with you? We've really missed out on a huge opportunity with Mike, because in my opinion the guy has a lot of talent but he needs an editor or a co writer to save him from himself.
Just my opinion.

Big & Rich.... not sure if anybody here knows much about them, but these guys are really talented. some of their stuff is kind of hard to get into, but John Rich writes some really good country songs. They're also both great singers in my opinion. It's mostly all sh*t kicking stuff though so if you just can't get into that you won't like it... but the guy is GREAT with Melodies. He's similar to a guy like David Allan Coe. If anybody wants to give it a try, here's a few great songs Big & Rich - Big Time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssHnkroH8tIThis is one of Big & Rich's great songs where they sing the whole lead in two part harmony. I love that sound. --------------------------------------------------- Faith Hill & Tim McGraw - Like We Never Loved At All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzpd3wO9X2YAgain with a great melody. Just the way it's so bouncy and simple I think is the mark of how talented John is. Fantastic song writer, and Faith is just an angel in my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------- Gretchen Wilson - When I Think About Cheatin' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukBiKhxxu0sJust straight up country. Wonderful. Obviously in the style of Tammy Wynette - ish ballads. ---------------------------------------------------- Faith Hill - Sunshine & Summertime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3b10MUBHvMCatchy, poppy, just edgy enough to be cool.... this is John's forte, this type of song that's just infectious as hell. It's interesting that he can take someone as 'safe' as Faith Hill and write a song for her that works. Very talented songwriter, in my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------- John Rich - Shuttin' Detroit Down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Io6uBtSikThis is slightly political, and usually I can't stand that crap... but this is universal and populist enough that it doesn't really bother me, John stickin' up for the little man! (It's about the bank bailouts) Again with the melodies, though, the guy has a knack for writing catchy sh*t. -------------------------------------------------------- Big & Rich - Never Mind Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzKKpoJB8JUAnother fantastic two part harmony song, and again catchy as hell with a neck breaking melody. -------------------------------------------------------- Big & Rich - 8th Of November https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozpdBvB0hekIntro by Kris Kristofferson, biographical song based on the story of a black medic who heroically saved several soldiers on a bad day in Vietnam, amazing song written by John. More incredible two part lead vocal harmony. ------------------------------------------------------- Tim McGraw - California https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvoVms9oZPsThis is on Tim's new album, just released... John's still got it. Catchy as hell, cleverly written, I'm sure this will be a huge hit.

This was linked to on John Fogerty's facebook-page with a blink to yesterday's CMA's. From 2011's CMAs.... This has got to be one of the worst performances I've ever heard. If this is the best modern country music has to offer I don't wanna imagine what the worst sounds like.... Anyway: "Here's a video of John Fogerty performing "Travelin' Band" with hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood along with the 2015 CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Miranda Lambert." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVTqZGRMGl0Yeah, that's pretty bad. These things usually are... all three of those singers are very talented, but this is outside their wheelhouse. - Carrie Underwood : Great singer, but this song is way too gnarly for her, she sounds like a pussycat trying to sing it. - Miranda Lambert : Exact same problem - Brad Paisley : I like Brad a lot, he's a great human being and a great songwriter... but his guitar playing is the equivalent of Christina Aguilera's singing... very talented, but way over the top. I don't know why he plays like that, and to be honest I've never really liked his tone. He's a very competent player though, and a great songwriter. -------------------------------------------------------- If they really wanted to do the song justice, they should have just slowed it down and made it a blues song. Imagine it slow and acoustic, it'd be great, and maybe they could add something to it. Trying to Kick Ass better than John Fogerty is going to be a losing proposition every time.

I think where most people have their head up their ass about this stuff is, we hear the music and think of the band artistically because of the way it makes us feel when we hear the music. This bleeds over into every conversation about the band.
The band, however, Brian included, sees the band as a vehicle to make money. Every single one of them has said this, and it's their job, so of course that's how they see it. The artistic parts of it are fulfilling but they work at this to make money. It's their job.
Mike is the one that has made that job make them money for over 50 years now. When Mike's out playing the Mohecian Sun casino or playing some stupid fair in Nebraska, he sends Brian and the others a nice fat piece of it in the mail.
Brian's genius gave them the wonderful music that people want to hear in the first place, but everybody knows you don't make money in the music industry without touring. Brian's probably attended 1/10th of the Beach Boys live shows and has gotten paid for 10/10 of them. Why in the world Mike gets blamed for that I will never know.

So, we're in Boise like I was saying... and he gets back on the bus, and he's looking everywhere, I mean looks in the back, looking under the table... finally, finally I just show him the receipt. WE PAWNED HIS GUITAR!!!! It was hilarious! These damn hipsters and their music instruments."

"You say you're a bigger celebrity then me, right John? Full House, all the kids remember it, right John? Well then, John, Explain to me exactly how the hell I got them to put this baby on stage because I put it in the rider? Huh John? You think you could pull that off? I told them I need a meditation room, and a fucking 1948 WURLITZER JUKEBOX and they made it happen John."

Really? The source of slurping? I'd dare you to name a good source of this fine sound, but I'm a little concerned what I might get back. I'll just take your word on it, coathanger-man.
I've noticed this in my own life. I don't think i'm a genius, I think people just have different sensitives to it. I noticed it when I was a kid, it's hard to explain without sounding like a creep. When I was a kid, there was this gentle old man that was friends with my family, he would come over to the house and one of my favorite things was listening to him talk, if it was quiet enough and all you could hear was his gentle voice, it was almost mesmerizing. Every little nuance, syllable, and breath. Again, trying not to sound like a weirdo, just being honest. Nothing sexual about it, it was just a warmth. Later I noticed that if men were around (i'm a guy) and I could hear anything intimate, i.e. their breathing, their chewing, them whispering or even talking in a low tone, it was incredibly annoying. To the point I would get up and leave in that situation. Children don't have that effect on me, or women. If I'm with a woman somewhere and she's whispering, or eating and I can hear it, it doesn't bother me at all. I don't think it has anything to do with hearing, I think it's some primal thing about control or some crap, I don't know. Very weird.

I have good memories of taping the 1995 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, back when it was still good. That year featured Frank Zappa, Neil Young, and Led Zeppelin, among a few more. A few years ago I watched the Hall of Fame induction, and Eminem was inducting Run DMC and calling them the rap version of The Beatles. I damn near puked.
Well, one of the members of Run DMC died. So as usual, the Rock & Roll hall of fame figured it was time to exploi.... urgh, induct them. Meanwhile, Chubby Checker is stonewalled while he's still alive. - The Twist was named by Billboard magazine in 2006, as the biggest chart hit OF ALL TIME - Chubby had 5 different albums in the top 12, all at one time... a record - Chubby has received a Grammy Award, Run DMC never received a Grammy - He's been married to the same woman for 51 years, which in my opinion, speaks to his character - the guy completely OWNS the dance craze, invented and popularized the twist, the hucklebuck, the fly, the pony, and the limbo. All of this sh*t is uncool, now, but in the 50's and early 60's all of these dance moves completely dominated the nation. There is not a kid alive who hasn't played the limbo. His impact on children and teenagers is near 100% because of this... - The Twist hit #1, twice. Nothing else ever did. It hit #2, AGAIN, in 1988 as a re-recording with the Fat Boys - When he had 5 albums in the top 12 on the chart, the Beatles once had the top 5 SINGLES on the charts... their #1 when they did that was "Twist And Shout".... a cover of the song inspired by Checker's the Twist. - Before Chubby Checker, people danced holding hands, touching. After Chubby Checker, people danced 'apart to the beat', dancing with each other, but not touching. This continues to today. Chubby did for dancing what Brian Wilson did for production with Good Vibrations. You literally can see his dance (5 different fads) laying the foundation to all the dancing done in nightclubs today. We put guys like Run DMC in who were great but had nowhere near the impact on music and society that Chubby Checker did. Not only was he around right at the beginning, he literally completely changed the way the world dances. When you play a song by any of these acts that are in the hall of fame, the crowd will dance apart to the beat out in the audience and all of that started with Chubby Checker. He has the biggest single of all time according to Billboard. He's the only guy to hit #1, twice, with the same song. Blows my mind.

If the fans get a vote, O.K., here's mine.
1. Chubby Checker 2. Neil Sedaka
until these two get in the R&R hall of fame is a complete joke. No Chubby Checker? Really? What excuse do they have for excluding people that were huge, huge contributors to music in the 50's when Rock & Roll was birthed? At least with all the other bands they've f***ed over (and are mostly named here in this thread) they can act like they'll do it later because they came later, but Chubby Checker and Neil Sedaka were around near the very beginning of Rock & Roll, both had huge contributions to Rock & Roll, both are great performers, both nice guys, and most importantly: Both men are still alive to accept the award! Why honor somebody after they die?
