1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: It's The Shortenin' Bread Thread! on: May 17, 2014, 09:01:14 PM
I make short bread mixing flour, butter flavored crisco and sugar in the overn for 40 mins.. It tastes and smells good but looks kind of simple/unappetizing. Probably not the healthiest snack either. Maybe replace the sugar with Cornmeal like the earlier recipe written above. My favorite version of Shortnin' Bread is by the Cramps.

I thought I read this song was worked on after Brian decided to scrap SMiLE.

A unique song that makes me wonder if maybe Mike was right and they shouldnt mess with the formula. This was the last track Brian made before starting work on Pet Sounds. I think it is one of his best. Of course the next 3 albums were all pretty great too.

No one can keep up a sound and quality forever. Mikey boi was wrong.

This track has some pretty darn good quality though. Summer Nights to me is amazing. Its as mind blowing as Pet Sounds

5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When was Dennis Point of no return? on: November 28, 2011, 05:51:03 PM
I dont think Dennis ever recovered from the Manson murders and the thought that some in the family were still out to get him. When Murray died it was just a continuation of what started. Dennis' last years were just a constant looking to score drugs or booze phase. Dennis would go in bars announce who he was, and ask someone to buy him a beer. That wasnt exactly the sign of someone on the verge of turning it around.

The string section in Tears in the Morning is interesting, but not enough to keep me coming back. This would have been a good instrumental.

Now Deirdre is hot sex.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When in their career, if ever, do you stop listening to the beach boys? on: November 28, 2011, 02:51:49 PM
I listen to almost nothing on SU/Holland/Passion or Big Ones and probably little after. I like a few tracks on BB '85 I consider 20/20 an awesome record, but only like 1 or 2 tracks from Sunflower.

1 or 2 tracks only? Huh Which ones are they?

AIWD of course, then a mix between Cool Water and sometimes OSL.

9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What Happened with Brian and the Band after Friends? on: November 28, 2011, 02:17:21 PM
I believe Brian had locked himself in his room by 1971 and was doing very little studio work. Maybe it was the drugs, thorazine or whatever but he was not active in many ways. I always thought Brian had done alot of work up until Sunflower, with the band pitching in for Sunflower and 20/20 but they were still overwhelmingly Brian records, with just less creative influence from Brian. Carl and the Passions and SU only had a few tracks with Brians involvement from what I have read.

Im listening to something called the Reconstructed SMiLE LP remix. If someone wants to tell me if its a new release or not, pm me. I dont have the experience to listening to nuances that others do.

Agree about Manson. I tried to bring that up but it got lost in the above quote. Manson and family were a handful at the Wilson household, but Brian did record with Manson several times. Supposedly even alone, which is frightening itself. Not sure if any of that music has ever surfaced.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jim Morrison and the Beach Boys on: May 25, 2011, 11:51:28 AM

When Jim didnt say anything.. i said "why dont you call Brian Wilson up?..Jim laughed and snorted and said "Honey, theres noway Brian Wilson will take my call. We arent on the same level of the music business"

Later Morrison said "The guy has a wall of people around him..I cant reach him..the great pang in my heart is you know I bet he would understand what im trying to do. We might have made music history"

He didnt seem to have a problem recording Manson. I know Dennis was mostly involved in that but Brian was reportedly in the studio working with Manson several times.

Who knows if the chick Jim was talking to was being truthful in the book or not. Theres no way to really know for sure.

I wonder if Brian would have taken his call

I feel that he wouldn't. IMHO Morrison had a dark side to his personality, not comparable to Brian's personal problems. I always have believed that Brian sought for the simple things in life, that make one happy. On a number of fronts he did not succeed. But he has nothing of that 'dark prince' personality that Morrison had, that pompous and also pathetic side ("I'm a real poet, me"). Morrison and Wilson wouldn't have matched, but they wouldn't have supplemented each other either.

The book Wild Child by Linda Ashcroft has the excerpt in it.  I believe this was shortly after Light
My Fire made The Doors big.

"I had this thought, you were saying how you had this piece of music - Gershwin rock and roll, I just heard Pet Sounds at a friends house, now, I know your not into all that lush sound, but if you listen to the backbone it sounds to me like Wilson was breaking the rules to great effect. Maybe you dont need someone classicaly trained to get the music out of your head, so much as another genius rule breaker.

16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Jim Morrison and the Beach Boys on: May 23, 2011, 11:10:21 PM
Supposedly Jim wanted to collaborate with Brian on an idea he had about a song. I think he wanted a Wall of Sound type track, but could never get ahold of Brian. (this was after Pet Sounds and probably SMiLE). Im wonderng if anyone else has a Jim Morrison or Doors and Beach Boys story.

"Then I kissed her" on Summer Days sounds very much like Carl or Brian but its Al.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When Beach Boys sound like other Beach Boys. on: March 03, 2011, 11:10:15 PM
Al sounds alot like the Wilsons on "Be Here in the Morning" though I suspected it was his vocal. Im not sure what other track besides Cotton Fields he does lead in the 60's to compare his voice with, but even "Cotton Fields" could easily pass for Brian, at least to my ears.

Wild Honey album is confusing for me to tell apart different leads usually.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why did the BBs use Al and Bruce as producers? on: March 03, 2011, 10:54:01 PM
I dont think Dennis was ever responsible enough to produce a BB record without heavy involvement from the rest of the band. Its true no one in the group would take him serious because he always goofed off and they did use his songs. And he always got alot of help from Brian or outside collabarators to help write the music for them. Im not sure he was ever fully capable of producing a record in the 60's by himself, im not sure anyone else in the band would have wanted that anyway. Brian included. Carl had his producing moments but i think Mike and Al and Bruce probably did not want a Wilson producing every record unless it was Brian. Carl and Dennis always wanted to take the group forward (Holland being a good example) while every one else wanted to stay an oldies band.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Article: Beach Boys 3 Million Dollar,435 Acre Real Estate Deal, August 1967 on: March 03, 2011, 01:24:28 AM
The Heroes and Villians book talked about this specific deal, Nick Grillo hooked them up and I think the idea was to flip the land at a profit at a later time. But something got in the way i cant remember what happened. But the Beach Boys blamed Grillo for it, who in retrospect according to the book, was one of thier better managers. They lost most of thier investment I'm pretty sure.

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / You're As Cool As You Can Be on: February 16, 2011, 10:53:05 PM
Supposedly in one of the very first Friends sessions the BB's were working on a track called "You're As Cool As You Can Be" friends sessions also have a song worked on named "Our Happy Home"......And a Smile session called "I Dont Know" which i have never heard unless it had been worked into another song. Smiley Smile has a sessions titled "Good News' and "Good Time Mama".

Im curious if anyone has heard about these tracks and also Mona Kani from the 20/20 sessions. And if they did, are they any good?

Again I have no knowledge of these unless they were just loosley based working titles that turned into different/known songs.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stan Love, friend or foe? on: November 02, 2006, 10:23:10 AM
Rocky was awful..i think he beat up all of the Wilsons. Not sure if he beat up Brian, but Brian has said he was intimitaded by Rocky and he was banging Marylin for awhile. But Brian had many GF's at this time too.

Was Stan the manager or was that another Love? there were quite a few Love's around in the 70's.
