I keep hearing comments like “Why won’t The Beach Boys just take my money?”. Answer: because there is no money to make on a project like this. Just consider the research costs, studio time, final mastering costs, legal fees, manufacturing costs, promotion costs, etc. And when (years from now) it finally makes a profit, it will be divided among several estates.

Fair point overall, but do keep in mind that most of those costs have probably already occurred, given that the project is complete and ready to go.

If we do end up with a digital only release, would it be overly-optimistic to draw er optimism from the fact that the 1968 release was digital-only but far from bare bones?

I wonder what sort of numbers on the petition signatures would be considered significant. I guess 1,300 might suggest that box could be expected to generate at least around $130,000 in sales. That said, I would imagine higher sales would be expected as well as required to justify the release. Someone here must have an idea how many units Made In California sold?

Maybe 10,000 signatures would make a difference on the basis that you would then be looking at guaranteed sales in excess of $1,000,000.

I guess at the moment the petition makes little to difference other than being a part of the general conversation among the likes of us which is at least keeping the topic on the agenda.

Perhaps that attempted remake would have been (will be  Cry) part of the Feel Flows set

Brian's official Facebook just posted a soundcheck of Blondie jamming on 'Feel Flows' with some hashtags including #feelflows

Not sure if thats coincidence or what, but there's no way the Brian camp doesn't know how a lot of us feel right now about this set. Would love for this to be their subtle way of cheering the set on too.

I am going to cautiously interpret this as promising news.

Great read.

"For a writing assignment, she once submitted a poem Brian wrote from a young girl’s perspective.  When she received it back, her teacher had written on it ‘Are you sure you wrote this?’ "

Did anyone ever get a hold of that poem?

See guitarfool, in your post you have offered some properly thought out criticism of a real incident that had apparently negative consequences (thank you for the info, it is new to me).

Nate asks rhetorically "who wants to see Mike Love?" but doesn't offer any credible reason why he wouldn't. He provides Brian's band with the praise they deserve, but he is apparently unaware of such figures as Scott Totten, who's service to the music has in my opinion been not far off Darian's.

The other fella says he saw a "really bad" version of The Beach Boys in the 80s. Well I can't speak for his experience, but I'd love to have seen a Beach Boys line up that featured Carl Wilson, regardless of how lame that Full House stuff was.
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nate Ruess on collaborating with Brian Wilson on: August 20, 2020, 04:10:44 PM
Brian and Mike's relationship is far deeper than that between Nate and Mike, so doesn't quite compare (I don't know if the latter have even met), although that is not a defense of past Mike comments or actions.

I agree that Nate is allowed to make any comment he likes and I prefer people to be their authentic selves. It is just my opinion that those particular comments were not very classy, insightful or constructive.

Compare for instance to Darian, no stranger to what Brian has gone through over the years, a true champion of Brian and his music, and a true hero to all of us I think it is fair to say:

I know that is a promo video but I think he is a pretty genuine guy.

Anyway, this wasn't my main takeaway from the conversation. The anecdote was brilliant and the Mike part didn't diminish my overall enjoyment of the interview, nor will it diminish my enjoyment of Nate's work with Brian.

No big deal, I just think a professional talking about a fellow professional is different to fans talking.

And yes Hold On Dear Brother was a highlight. Shame it is only on the DVD and not on the CD.
135  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nate Ruess on collaborating with Brian Wilson on: August 19, 2020, 07:22:23 AM
Fantastic. So, Nate sang not only the lead on Saturday Night...but also at least some of the background parts, directed on the fly by Brian Wilson.

Side note: I accept that there will be other opinions on this, but to hear professionals talk that way about Mike Love towards the end of the segment I found a little offputting.

You can hear this reverb on The Ronettes’ Be My Baby, parts of Pet Sounds, and other staples of that era in recording.

The only track from Pet Sounds that was recorded at Gold Star was Wouldn't It Be Nice, right?

The chambers were a mere 2×3 feet, but the cement lining did wonders to enlarge that.

How is this even possible? Is cement really *that* reflective?

Calculations suggest yes, but looks bigger than that in the image shown in this article

But didn’t Mike recently re-record 4/4 Big Sur? Some were expecting to see it appear on his recent solo offerings but in the end all we got was YouTube clip I think.

rab, that pic reminds me of someone on the board who used to do amazing mockups of fantasy Beach Boys releases, during the Smile Sessions era perhaps (9 years, f***). Where is that valued poster these days?

Thanks for providing that detail Rab and agreed.

All I have to say about this is...how fucking dare you endanger the safety of your fans in a situation like this. A man has the right to learn a living, but there are better and safer ways to do it.

Surely those fans have to take some responsibility for their own safety if they are taking the decision to attend?

I find the whole thing bizarre overall and wouldn't have risked attending, but as far as I know it is not clear yet how much outdoor events like this contribute to the spread of the virus. Someone may correct me if they know better, but I don't think there has been evidence that, say, the recent anti-racism protests contributed significantly to the spread of the virus, and those were attended by thousands.

(To be clear I am in no way suggesting that it is "okay" to attend a concert on the basis that people got together to protest against an appalling murder).
140  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 29, 2020, 06:29:18 PM
Well, if we take the Pet Sounds Sessions as an example, it might seem lame and petty to us that Mike had issues with the liner notes but from his perspective he had to defend his interests as he saw them. They reached a compromise in the end on that. I hope they can again if that is what is needed.
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 29, 2020, 06:03:41 PM
I am guessing that Mike Love had a say in this project getting off the ground in the first place. So if the implication that he is vetoing it is true, what could have changed in the meantime that cannot be resolved? There must be some complications that we are not privy to.
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 29, 2020, 02:14:18 PM
I see the point and agree that none of us as fans are "entitled" to anything and we should have some measure of respect for the band members' wishes. And it is difficult when we can only speculate from the outside based on bits of info.

But based on what we are hearing from those involved and the history of The Beach Boys, I think we should all be able to agree that it will be a damn shame if the hard work that has gone in to this set goes to waste.

The music that we do have will never let you down Billy.
144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 29, 2020, 11:14:33 AM
E.g. anything as revelatory as Surfs Up 1967 as appeared on Smile Sessions?
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 29, 2020, 09:58:30 AM
Many thanks to you Howie, not to mention Mark and Alan.

Sounds fantastic. Worrying to read that it is not currently scheduled for release.
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: July 29, 2020, 09:26:25 AM
Two questions come to mind for me.

1. Did Howie drop by to provide new information, i.e. that the project was recently completed and is now ready to go, or is the implication that nothing has so far happened despite this being the case for ages ?

2. Mark L said back in Feb/March on that IK Multimedia livestream that they were shooting for a fall release. If several dates have already been pushed back, is the inference that we are looking at a Christmas time release at best?
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unpopular Beach Boys opinions on: July 26, 2020, 10:38:21 AM
Would it be an unpopular opinion to say that I think Blondie should have had more of the Sail Away lead.
I reckon he could have taken Brian's verse.

My favourite Brian vocals on the album are probably This Beautiful Day and Whatever Happened. Whatever Happened is my favourite song on the album also by some way. Tell Me Why is pretty good too and has a coda/fade-out to rival anything he or The Beach Boys ever did. I was disappointed with The Last Song, was hoping for something as good as Summer's Gone. I'm Feeling Sad is an unassuming highlight though.
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Skrillex & Bruce Johnston in the News on: July 22, 2020, 07:07:19 PM
Interesting development, given that Bruce gave a shout out to what I thought are a rather obscure electronic group ('Knower') in this interview from the other week

I'd also be curious to hear the original Runaway Dancer.
If they exist, I'd also be interested in the Lana Del Rey version of Last Song, and Frank Ocean on Our Special Love.
Metropolis with Jeff Beck was another title mentioned during the making of NPP, as well as a Blondie sung "new track" He Come Down.

Related point, there could be interesting outtakes from TWGMTR, and anything in between these two albums.
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Our Special Love - A Second Released Mix? And are there more songs like this? on: January 24, 2020, 10:50:40 AM
I don't mind that one. When I first heard the NPP version, it seemed a little less processed to me than the first version.
I think I read a story that this song was once intended for Frank Ocean before being significantly reworked.
