People who actually think "Smart Girls" is either good rap or a good song generally really worry me...

And no, Bean Bag, a lot of good hip-hop in the '80s/'90s wasn't lame or cringe-worthy assuming you actually like hip-hop?

Well, I've never heard Love You-era live recordings so I can't speak to those. Were they as amazingly demented as I hope?

Couldn't they have done what they had been doing since 1996 (until 2012 obviously): Release no new material, tour constantly. No one seems to have cared about the paucity of new material for those 16 years, and everyone would've been spared those presumably horrible (I've never listened to them) post-1985 albums.

I think I'm the only person on this forum who doesn't care about The Beach Boys as a live band except for the early-to-mid-1970s when they were actually very good, and maybe the more interesting late-'60s efforts like the Hawaii concerts.

That's Why God Made Autotune. Boom!

I was going to say that last night but didn't bother. I feel like Daptone is R&B for people who are scared of actually contemporary R&B which incorporates (at least or most obviously) hip-hop. Erykah Badu's more recent stuff, like the New Amerykah series for example.

Mike is a better lyricist than either of those people. Or at least was once upon a time. Anyone can be forgiven not wanting to work with Mike post-'78/79, I guess, since he seems to have quit trying.
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: May 04, 2013, 01:49:05 AM
Does anyone have a copy of Lester Bangs' full Love You review they'd be willing to post somewhere?
134  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl and Mike's relationship on: May 03, 2013, 02:00:08 AM
And that quarter of an album rules: I will drunkenly fight anyone who hates on "It's OK", "Had To Phone Ya", "Chapel Of Love"*, "Talk To Me"**, "Pallisades Park"***, "Back Home", and "Just Once In My Life"!

* "Chapel Of Love" is great because Brian sounds like he desperately wants to believe what he's saying but doesn't exactly care enough to sing it. f*** you, it's great.
** "Talk To Me" kinda underwhelms as a song but I love the synth/horn/guitar (?) bit of instrumentation. If nothing else the album is very interesting texturally...
*** I wish this was sped up but it cooks man! Even Carl knows it! You hear that nasty synth/guitar stuff? Hell yeah.

The Beach Boys should've released EPs, I think they would've benefited from both the shorter running time (7 Big Ones EP, oh yes!) and the freedom to do one-off, quick things while working on albums.

"Back Home" is punk as f***. Brian gives no shits. You love it.

And "Sea Cruise" rules too. Why was this left off in favour of shitty songs by Mike and Al? AND WHERE IS THE 'HOT MIX' OF "ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC"

If releasing this fantasy "fantastic album" some of you speak of would mean there then wouldn't be Love You, I say: Bring on 15 Big Ones. For as shitty as 3/4 of that album is... I wouldn't want to live in a world without Love You!

Here's your '90s band riding their nostalgia wave.
137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can You Manage Listening To the Album Gettin' In Over My Head While High? on: May 02, 2013, 02:38:39 PM
Considering people who don't otherwise have mental illnesses can get paranoid or anxious when they smoke weed -- and sometimes on not even a lot of it -- you'd think grasping that this might increase where pre-existing (and especially already-diagnosed) mental illness occurs would be uncontroversial.
138  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can You Manage Listening To the Album Gettin' In Over My Head While High? on: May 02, 2013, 12:28:16 PM
I wonder if Brian and Carnie ever smoked up together. Good ol' father-daughter bonding!

She, of course, gets first dibs on the nut-crushing.

I think if Mike didn't have his obsession with commercial viability he'd be pretty punk as f***. Dude just doesn't seem to give a sh*t in a lot of ways, haha.

Hey hypehat and whoever else: Get me into disco. Tell me what albums or compilations or whatever I absolutely need. I know nothing of the genre beyond the ridiculously popular white-boy Bee Gees disco stuff...
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can You Manage Listening To the Album Gettin' In Over My Head While High? on: May 01, 2013, 04:22:58 PM
Okay, okay. Maybe I should just snort some hydromorphone and throw on the Spring album!

I know most of you don't like hip-hop because it's "not music" or whatever the f*** but it owns and there was a lot of good sh*t dropping in '97. Witness (the albums are just as good as the tracks too):

Busta Rhymes - "We Could Take It Outside" ft. Flipmode Squad (from When Disaster Strikes...)
Common - "Real Nigga Quotes" (from One Day It'll All Make Sense)
Company Flow - "Legends" (from Funcrusher Plus)
Dr. Dre & B-Real - "Puppet Master" (from DJ Muggs Presents The Soul Assassins, Chapter 1)
Latyrx - "Say That" (from The Album)

In a couple weeks I'm going to pick up an ounce and get ripped so I can stumble through The Beach Boys post-Love You catalogue. I would never bother doing this sober. It will probably be horrible...
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: UPDATED: I met with Alan Boyd last week on: April 30, 2013, 03:31:27 PM
Rarities-only releases where a third of the tracklisting is stupid sh*t like stereo remixes or unnecessary dialogue rather than more previously unreleased material -- which this group has a lot of, as we know -- is a cruel joke. There's a reason bootlegs exist, after all.
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: UPDATED: I met with Alan Boyd last week on: April 30, 2013, 10:45:37 AM
Desper's mixes of Sunflower and Surf's Up should've been the bonus tracks on those releases, at least that way they'd be widely available and, if for whatever reason someone didn't end up preferring them (though based on what I've read by others who have said mixes and heard myself in the "Cool, Cool Water" study video this seems highly unlikely!), the standard stereo mixes would still be there.
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why did the 'Add Some Music To Your Day' single fail and what if it had not? on: April 29, 2013, 12:22:17 PM
I think "All I Wanna Do" is memorable and could've been a good single. Or maybe they could've released a non-LP single to promote Sunflower: "San Miguel"/"Games Two Can Play" Smokin
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How would you rank this album? on: April 28, 2013, 09:03:00 AM
That's rich for the guy who swipes all his songs from the Kingston Trio.
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Larry King to Brian on: April 27, 2013, 11:04:04 PM
I want Nardwuar to interview Brian
Will never happen... even though he did interview Daniel Johnston with no problems.

Brian Wilson is often mentioned in Nardwuar interviews. I think once by Timothy Leary, again by Wayne Coyne, and others I'm forgetting.
"...If you interviewed him like this, he would cry." -  Wayne Coyne

Tommy Chong mentioned him too, said he saw him riding an elevator in Las Vegas continually, looking drugged out. (Don't recall if Tommy dated this interaction but it might've been the '70s?) Nardwuar asked if he tried to help Brian and Tommy responded with, essentially, "That's just Brian, what can you do?" I was surprised at how harsh Leary was towards Brian actually. Did they have a bad meeting at some point?

Honestly, I think Brian could go either way. Maybe he'd really like Nardwuar's unorthodox interviewing style and meticulous research (plus his general good-natured goofiness might appeal to Brian's oddball sense of humour) -- if nothing else, he'd certainly not get asked the same old sh*t and could show off his supposedly elephantine memory to good effect! I wonder if it's been attempted but Brian's people routinely refuse or something...

I think there should be at least three discs dedicated solely to Al on the box set.
