1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Brian Know How To Play Guitar? on: November 18, 2021, 07:47:23 AM

The keys in which the band's songs were performed would suggest that very few of them were written on guitar (and the band rarely used capos). One possible candidate for being written on guitar is "Girl Don't Tell Me." "All I Wanna Do" was apparently also conceived for guitar, but that doesn't mean it was written on one.

Could you elaborate what you mean by this.

Did Brian know how to play guitar in the '60s? If so, did he ever write a song on one? I've never ever seen him play one. I saw what looked like a publicity shot of him holding an acoustic guitar sometime in the '00s.

If he doesn't know how why do you think he never tried to learn? Did he feel being able to write on piano was good enough and was just more interested in writing?

I know he taught himself bass guitar well enough to play live.

In this clip from 1988 it mentions that George Harrison called Brian's manager and wanted to work with him. Does anyone have more info about this? Did they ever meet up? It's interesting that George contacted Brian because the only Beatle you usually hear about with respect to the Beach Boys is Paul.

Coincidentally enough, I sold nearly all of my CDs over the past week. I still have the Pet Sounds Sessions box, MIC box, 2-cd Smile sessions box, and the BWPS cd though. I was just tired of the physical space all the CDs were occupying, when I almost always listened to music though my computer. I only used CDs when in my car, but I can just get an ipod and car adapter for that now.

Was the 2011 SMiLE disc released as a 1 CD stand alone? I found a used copy at the store the other day. I've never seen a stand alone 1 disc like this one in a jewel case. I took some pictures:

Talks about Brian and others. At the end of the video she goes to the old United Western Recorders site asking to get in to show the TV station where she recorded. They didn't know who she was and Carol left upset. It was kinda sad to watch.

But there really isn't a year where the BBs outmatch the Beatles. There are moments.

8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / How much time does Brian spend playing his piano and writing? on: July 31, 2017, 11:33:56 AM
When Brian isn't touring, how much time does he spend at his piano each day playing or writing? And how does that compare to the '60s? I seem to recall him saying in an interview that he plays for half an hour per day these days but I can't remember exactly.

I'm interested in how much time great songwriters like Brian, Lennon, McCartney, Dylan, etc spent / spend per day playing and writing.

Will a full Live in Hawaii from August 1967 ever be released? They released a few tracks from their set on this CD but there are more.

I saw it last night. It was pretty good. Lots of cool insights with people like Tony Asher, Hal Blaine, and Don Randi. Al at one point played Sloop John B on piano to show how he presented it to Brian. Brian got asked if he remembered why he put Mike back on the bridge of WIBN. Brian responded "Because I wanted him included on the song."

What's the story behind the piano intro on Why Do Fools Fall In Love? I listened to a version of the song today with it and I've never heard that intro before.

13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "Carl Wilson and four musicians known as the Beach Boys" on: August 29, 2016, 06:20:14 PM
I read this in a review of last year's Carl Wilson biography:

from early on, Beach Boys' contracts stipulated that the band would consist of "Carl Wilson and four musicians known as the Beach Boys."

http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/926-carl-only-knows-a-new-biography-of-the-man-legally-known-as-the-beach-boys/

Is there any truth to that? If so, why was the contract written that way?

On Barbara Ann was Dean Torrence doing the high part by himself or was he doubled by Brian? I listened to the session outtake on the Hawthorne, CA cd today and I couldn't really tell.

There is apparently a new God Only Knows / Wouldn't It Be Nice 45 pressed on yellow vinyl going around. Does anyone have more info?

When I Grow Up To Be A Man

Won't last forever...
It's kinda sad...

I've always loved that. Mike & Brian really nailed that part. It's my favorite part of the song.

Also, the coda of the Smiley Smile version of Wind Chimes is heavenly.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Behind The Music: Sloop John B on: June 21, 2016, 10:57:47 PM
It's my video.  I disputed the copyright claim a while ago but it was rejected so there's not much I can do about it.  It's because the Sloop John B. Promo Film with the boys in Brian's swimming pool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSAoEf1Ib58) has been completely blocked by UMG and I used a clip of that at the tail end of the video.

You can download the original file here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/s2ptsj

Thank you! I've been trying to get that video for so long. I should have thought to post here.  Smiley

All of these videos are really well done. Any chance of you finishing the album?
