Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Who is this man?
|

Hey all. It's been a while since i posted here but i need some help from the experts! In a Facebook group I'm in, somebody posted a photo of an MFP reissue of Today, simply called 'Beach Boys' and with a different cover featuring a (i think) 1967 photo of the band, minus Brian. It was also used as the cover for Unsurpassed Masters Vol 19. My question is, who is the man inbetween Mike and Al. Ive been searching everywhere and i cant seem to find a good answer. Any ideas?

1992.
Put yourself into the mind of a young teenage boy. A few years ago, a song by a band that your mother fondly remembers is dominating the radio. A groovy little exotic song about beaches, the tropics and steel drum bands. Kokomo. You love It. "The feel good hit of the Summer" announces the disk jockey before the drums start to pound. For a few weeks, you're Beach Boys crazy. Digging through your parents old record collection you find stacks of tracks of albums. Dozens of old dusty vinyl. There are 5 men. Three of them brothers. A friend. And a cousin. You throw on one of the random albums from the pile, the five men standing around a classic slick looking car, on the family turntable and listen. A guitar riff bursts out of the speakers and for the next 25 minutes, the sounds of pure 60s Rock N Roll bounce around the room. There are some slacks on the record. A song at the end is just a drum solo. But you don't care. You are moved by a beautiful track telling you "Don't Worry, Baby". More records follow. You sit in the living room, the glow of the fireplace complimenting the ambience as the reverb soaked twangs of a song you can't quite remember the name of. The record cover sticks out. The five men again, feeding goats? Pet Sounds. It's the most magnificent album you've ever heard. From the carnival organ intro to screech of the train, tears fill your eyes. You've never appreciated music like this. You become hooked. Every record has something to offer. Even the lesser ones of the mid 70s still have the power to captivate you. Then by sheer coincidence one day, you and your family are huddled around the TV watching a sitcom. Full House. Then the mullet wearing John Stamos mutters something: "Beach Boys" Your eyes widen. They're here. The Boys enter the Tanner household, all dressed in jackets. One of them is missing though. The brother who played drums. It doesn't pass your mind however. Your eyes draw to a man in a cap. "Mike Love" They sing Kokomo later. Your favorite song. The years pass and eventually you become more up to date with modern music. Then while watching more Full House, you see a poster in the background. 'The Beach Boys: Summer In Paradise'
Your eyes widen A New beach boys record?? You have to find it. Days pass and eventually your local record store is beginning to sell copies. You wait outside all night and when the doors open, buy the record. The first one there. Bringing the album home with its fancy Digipak packaging, wrapped in a bag, like gold, you place the CD into the stereo and hit play.
5 minutes pass
Something isn't right. The record sounds... so... lackluster. The first song was mediocre but you think hey maybe it's just that one. Then comes the next track: Surfin'. You recognize this one. An early one. But now it's been coated in synths and drums. You push the rage back. Maybe the rest will be okay. The song ends and there is a brief moment of silence. You had the chance to escape. To grab the CD and never look back. But you didn't. The drums explode through the stereo and a thick record scratch echoes out.
Then comes the singing. It's Mr Love. The man you looked up to. You cherished. The man who made Kokomo, the greatest record Ever made. He's rapping. A sickening beat about girls on the beach. By the time the track ends, you are openly weeping. You grab the CD case and check the back. Around 99% of the songs hold the name of Mr Love as a writing credit. How could the Love man do this? The Beach Boys, in your eyes, are dead. The CD jams and begins to skip. "It's a love thing" clicks in and out on infinite repeat. You run from the room, the mocking song echoing behind you. Your father's gun is the only option. You cram the ammo into the chamber and run downstairs, unloading the bullets onto the CD player. It doesn't work. Nothing can stop this song. You know what to do. With the last few bullets, you aim the chamber at your head and then you pull the trigger. As the life fades from your eyes, Mike Love looms over you. Tears stream down your cheeks as you reach out to him. It hits you then. This song is a masterpiece. The greatest record ever made. And as you draw your last breath, Mike speaks "Hey Now, well it's a love thing" Your eyes close as the life drains from your body. it is done

Christ, I forgot about that lifestyles of the rich and famous video. I think the first time I saw it I burst out laughing and then slowly got more and more angry as the video went on before started laughing at the absurdity of the whole thing. The shot of Mike rubbing his body while he talks about "cooties" while a raga plays in the background is still hilarious but still makes me shudder at the thought of it

Okay before everyone starts typing "WELL IT'S A LOVE THANG" let's stop and think about this here. The Boys are no stranger to shall we say questionable moments both musically and in real life. What would you say is the cringiest thing they have ever done (individual members too)?
Personally I have to say watching Brian be interviewed while Landy wraps his arms around him like a mother figure was pretty difficult to watch, or the beautiful rendition of Good Vibrations while Carl is piss ass drunk.

Welcome back!
I go through phases where I won't listen to much of The Beach Boys for a while. But then something will spark my interest in them and their all I'll listen to for months after that. I listened to BWPS last night and it made my wonder why I even lost interest in them a couple months ago.
As SMiLE Brian says, you'll love the Wild Honey set. The Surfer Girl a cappella is one of the most beautiful tracks they've released.
Welcome back, you will love the new wild honey set!
Ah yeah I've already heard it! The version of The Letter here is glorious and now I can finally listen to one of my favorite Albums in true stereo. And that Surfer Girl Accapella is so beautiful. Brian sounds so tender here. Also we finally got Game of Love! Took long enough! All we need now is a 1968-69 box set (Sunflower Tomorrow?)

*sigh*
It's been a while. A long long time. I don't know if anyone here even vaguely remembers me but I used to post here no stop a good couple of months back. If you're wondering why I stopped... well I just did. There really wasn't a reason for it. College I guess would be the reason. But it doesn't matter. I think it's also because I sort of stopped listening to The Beach Boys. Blur and Pink Floyd became my main focus. But hey anyway I'm back into the Beach Boys and I'm back here!
Can't wait to chat again!

Really liked the original...but then again after the utter MESS which accompanied Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains on Smiley Smile maybe ANYTHING would have sounded OK...the disco version was 'ehhhh' for that specific era. Not really very hip or cool for the club/dance crowd and sort of "what the fucking f***?" for Beach Boys fans.
Bruce should be whipped for doing THAT. Then there's Wipeout with the Fat Boys which they were all guilty of to a degree, and especially that gawd-forsaken crucifixion of 'Surfin' on Summer in Pair of Dice. Leave the legacy alone 'Love'. The hatred/disdain/lack of respect/sell out/undermining of the legacy/flippant disregard for accomplishment/attempts to rearrange history incorrectly/LACK OF A N Y TALENT is totally evident. You'd flush your ancestors down the toilet for a minuscule chance at even a far-fetched/next to impossible shot at a tiny stipend of potential money. You have no soul.
I'm sorry what are you saying Smiley Smile is bad? HERESY

Hey John! Sounds brilliant so far! A number of tracks are new to me. Is it possible to give a list of which group plays on which track? Or is this already online somewhere?
Nice work, HaV!
Wishing you were here, Call on me, Byblos, Song of the evagreens and searching so long are Chicago tracks. Shyin' Away, Superstar, Sweet Mountain, Now that everything's been said are American spring tracks. Precious love and Bill are songs by the flames. The rest are the Boys! Thanks! It was the Chicago tracks (I know nothing of theirs) and "Precious Love" that threw me. Great mixtape you got there. Thank you, man. I appreciate it

So this was something I've been thinking of doing for aroun a week now and it's to create a double album worth of material from the CATP sessions, American Spring, Chicago (as The Boys did backing vocals on some tracks) and The Flame. It may sound incredibly unconventional and unbelievable but it's a good album none the less. For the sake of the album, let's just say that Chicago actually recorded songs from Chicago 7 in 1972. Anyway: The Passions are: Brian Wilson: Vocals, Piano Mike Love: Vocals Carl Wilson: Lead Guitar, Vocals Alan Jardine: Rhythm Guitar, Vocals Dennis Wilson: Piano, Percussion, Vocals Bruce Johnston: Vocals, Piano Blondie Chaplin: Lead Guitar, Bass, Vocals Ricky Fataar: Vocals, Drums Steve Fataar: Guitar, Vocals Brother Fataar: Bass Marilyn Wilson: Vocals, Harmony Diane Rovell: Vocals, Harmony Terry Kath: bass, lead vocals Peter Cetera: classical acoustic guitar, lead and backing vocals Robert Lamm: acoustic piano Danny Seraphine: drums Lee Loughnane: trumpet James Pankow: trombone Walter Parazaider: tenor saxophone Daryl Dragon: Keyboards Cathryn Tennille: Keyboards Jack Reily: Vocals, Harmony http://suan.fm/mix/qAdSnUY
