126  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys In Concert on: March 03, 2014, 03:16:01 PM
Outstanding release .. some of this was recorded at Hollywood Paladium 1973  at my 1st BB concert ever.. With my 1st girlfriend and 1st love of my life on the cover..  I still miss you baby..!!  The music is outstanding and my only complaint is no Dennis lead vocal.. Ive worn out numerous copies of this LP over the years and I still hold them to this standard of excellence .. 5/5 does not do this LP justice.. No words to describe the importance of this LP to myself  or the legacy of the BB..  Funny thing is BW isn't on it and it doesn't matter.. That's how good the BB were back then..! Alan's vocal on Don't Worry Baby + You Still Believe in Me  ..OUTSTANDING.. The whole LP reeks of SOUL.. Oh to a have a full concert on video to play + watch NOW.. Sure glad I was old enough to see them in the 70"s.. BLISS

I originally bought this LP as an import 1971 I believe and I must have owned 3-4 versions all with different covers.. Bought the USA one in 1976..  The guys are very good here with some deep cuts that were new when this came out.. Some back up musicians along to fill out the sound..  EXCELLENT.. !! This LP has been played HUNDREDS of times over the years and has the only version of Barbara Ann I can listen to.. LOL !.. Sure would be nice to get some more stuff like this to be released.. 5/5

Endless Summer Vol 3..LOL.. Track line up is excellent.. Cover is OK for the times but I would have preferred a cover with the 70's BB look of hairy guys with beards.. Another vital 70's compilation.. 5/5

Endless Summer Vol 2.. Another collection that brought new converts and old fans back to the fold.. Along with their concerts..  Another vital re issue in the 70's.. SORRY ugly cover.. Music 5/5..
130  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Endless Summer on: March 03, 2014, 02:34:01 PM
Ive met so many people over the years that either were turned onto BB or reminded of the group and became fans again because of this release.. The influence of this record can not be discounted .. IMHO.. Ugly cover but music is 5/5.. And as far as people sayin this turned them into an oldies band.. I think not.. And it isn't Mike's fault either.. That was much later in 90's.. The AUDIENCE turned BB into oldies act.. When your playin the  best of your latest stuff and audience is unruly and yelling for Surfer Girl what the heck are you gonna do..?.. Two choices.. 1} Retire + pump gas  2} Play em.. I don't blame BB.. They tried.. All's forgiven.. The oldies are great anyway.. How are you gonna top ..GOOD VIBRATIONS...?
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: 20 Golden Greats on: March 03, 2014, 02:23:31 PM
I remember buying this LP as a English Import 76-77.. Nice compilation.. Boring cover.. great music 5/5.. In the 70's + 80's lots of import compilations had nice covers that  I used to collect all the time.. It was kinda fun having LP's from all over the world with a lot of pics at that time no one had ever seen..  Had  a huge collection of them..  Also import 45's ..  In the cd era covers are all the same like this cover.. Or variations on the same theme..  Don't get why the cover doesn't mean much any more.. It used to be as important as the music inside..  In David Leaf"s excellent book there is a picture of BW on tour  holding this LP around some fans .. I hear this LP was big stuff in England.. Top 5 I believe..

If you go over to you tube and look up Brian Wilson on studio Q with Jian Ghomeshi you'll find a real nice interview with BW when the Gershwin LP was released.. Brian is just as talkative and articulate  and engaged as any  interview from the 70's ..  The only real damage I see is his voice is  ruff from singing on tour.. He comes across as comfortable easy going and a nice man.. I clicked the link above for part 2 1976 and this interview appeared also... Check it out..

The LA Times did an article about is rock dead.. 1-26-14.. They declared it is dead.. Writer said Rock is not relevant anymore and put it out of its misery..! Rap + POP + R+B  better .. He said RAP has all the anger that rock used to have + all the people that play it are old.. Im not quoting here but essentially that's what he said.. I guess ill go hock my guitar Wink Good nite..

Comments on Groovy photos.. Ah Memories !  You have jogged my memory.. I thought beach stuff was for 2 years but after lookin at date on KHJ survey I realized it was 1 year but 2 summers..  That KHJ top 30 survey is dated 3-22-67.. NGDB did Buy For Me The Rain on a sand dune winter spring 1967 .. WE used to go to Santa Monica every weekend and I learned how to surf there .. We would get there 7am and surf till 10am .. Then surfin wasn't allowed except near the pier.. KHJ would come down and film there and sometimes during the week in summer also.. it was a very popular show and you mentioned games they played.. One was human pyramids in the sand which I participated in many times.. Great fun + a little dangerous..! Bands played on Sand Dunes back away from the water  but they would make the crowd stay back where Michael Blodgett was....  NGDB.. Bob Lind.. Standells.. Allman joys.. Roy Head.. The Byrds  Tommy Roe.. Seeds.. Most of the artists on 9th st west + Hollywood ago go.. did the beach thing.. After the show went inside less guests more music videos..  When I was on that show in the back ground on the beach I was in 9th grade + 10th grade.. Question tho to Guitar Fool.. Are those pics of the KHJ truck and beach flocked..?? Turned around.. Groovy show was filmed on the south side of the pier.. Your pics show north side of the pier.. Groovy show was filmed south side of pier same area known as muscle beach.. Still in Santa Monica.. Muscle Beach was an area near the board walk where they weight lifted .. Gym equipment.. Volley ball nets.. wrestling   mats..  Also the large building in the back I think.. Is the old merry go round..

This stuff is more along the lines of DJ thread.. That Top 30 chart was awesome to see and jogged memories.. Back in those days I knew NOTHING about Billboard + Cash box charts etc.. To us  KHJ charts were it.. So if it was a hit here it was a hit everywhere In USA.. Well that's not always the case I learned later.. Or maybe it didn't chart as high somewhere else.. KHJ and our little transistor radio's + buying 45rpm singles is what we all bought to learn songs to play in our little bands..  KHJ was really hip and played songs that were not getting airplay elsewhere.. Case in point.. Little Black Egg The Night  Crawlers.. If you had a little band you played that song.. REQUIRED.. Another one Hey Joe The Leaves.. Big hit out here and everyone played it.. Hendrix came out with his 2 years later and we thought he ruined the song. Shocked Listen to intro of Byrds  Feel A Whole Lot Better.. Almost exact same intro as Leaves Hey Joe.. That KHJ top 30 survey has a lot of hip things that didn't hit big nationally . The Merry Go Round.. Yellow Balloon The Seeds.. NGDB..  Great stuff..!!  I know it helped to be in the center of the Music Bussiness.. Back then AM wasn't conservative ..And the DJ's were all stars.. And it was nice to see Charlie Tuna with real hair in that pic.. A life long BB supporter ..

HELLO.. Hope you are all still here.. Question}  The premier of GV like I said I did see that but all I remember is BW + 2 other people which I later learned the guy with the hat was Mike Vosse.. What I don't remember is if they showed a video during premier but I think they did.. Why ? Because in the 60's I remember 2 videos that I saw ONE time and never saw again.... Till American Band video in 80's.. 1} BW solo Surfs Up On Leonard Bernstein Special... 2} I saw the full video of the Fireman// firehouse  video and never saw it again.. So im assuming it had to be that show.. So question is: Was that the official video for GV..? Im confused because in American band video they went + put different songs to some videos..  Its been along time  Grin

I never watch award shows ever.. Unless the BB are on.. They are all the same.. Thud  And I don't feel bad or that I missed anything important.. I did see a link from facebook today of the CHICAGO set.. Boy that dude Robin sure is full of himself.. Is he related to Alan Thicke..??  He can sing but he UPSTAGED Chicago.. I bet the director of the Grammies put that together and never realized how CHICAGO would look.. Sound great and look STUPID... Beer

Yea B. Mitchell Reed In Southern California.. He went from AM to FM and went to KPPC Pasadena ca.. The 1st rock station on FM dial out here.. Then he went to KMET and his knick name was The Beamer on radio.. He was one of those jocks that got REAL close to the musicians and hung out + partied with them.. CSNY in particular.. He used to play LONG cuts on the radio..!! But he died young like in his late 50's I think.. He was famous out here.!
