kds, "selling out" may be overused, but to my memory it was the very first time I used it, and that only because I was responding to a post where you used it. I even put it in quotes, dammit. Personally, "selling out" reminds me much more of a full theatre. However, I stand by my admittedly unpopular opinion. There are many ways of selling one's soul. Many are blatant, others subtler. But in any case the Pinx reclaimed their collective soul with "Animals", so it can be said that they didn't sell it, just lent it for a while. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-oJt_5JvV4

Sigh. And so soon after Greg Lake. JK, I couldn't agree with you more. "Starless" was John's greatest highlight of a great career, his halcyon moment as a singer, a composer (the sublime main melody is his) and bassist. The buildup he does with Bill Bruford in the central section is simply jaw-dropping. Another fantastic performance by John (crank up the bass to fully hear what he does here, practically a long solo under the song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pePo-EQyJWw Please notice also the unmistakable flute by another great ex-King Crimson, Ian McDonald.

Thanks RR for this reminder of how this board REALLY was when it was "healthy, thriving and full of great contributions by real experts". AGD saying something dumb and mean, and OSD responding with a homophobic comment ... classic Smiley. You all would do well to remove your blinders so you can see past the political Brian-camp/Mike-camp politics. AGD was clearly a jerk in some of his posts, but he was a knowledgeable jerk. At the end of the day, he contributed a wealth of knowledge to the board. Some other posters are simply jerks in some of their posts. I'm sure we're all sweet peaches in real life and we'd get along just dandy. No amount of knowledge can condone behaviour like that, particularly the bits about Ang and OSD. I wonder who should remove their blinders. And OSD is not the same as AGD. He has just one pet peeve: Mike. It's an understandable peeve, as ML, after his initial great contributions, has been a perpetual frustration to all at least minimally objective BB fans. OSD has always taken a lot of flack for that, more than warranted, but he sounds like a nice guy... provided you can accept that he doesn't like Mike.

I'll leave the Justins (Bieber, Timberlake) and their ilk alone, to point at a fav group of mine instead. Worst song ever is... without the slightest doubt... THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY When I heard that overlong vocalising*, so totally out of place with all they had created up to that moment in their career, so totally soul-selling to the evil forces of commerce, so totally desecrating to poor Syd Barrett and what he had meant, I thought they were artistically dead. Then, there came Animals... * Nothing against the singer, of course. She did very well what they were expecting from her. I could understand if you said that the song Money was "selling to the evil forces of commerce," but Great Gig in the Sky is one of the more non commercial tracks off DSOTM. I can see the vocals not being one's cup of tea, but to combine this track with the thought of selling out doesn't make much sense IMO. Speaking of Syd, I really like his Floyd era stuff, but there are some tracks on his solo albums I think you can add to this mix. I can't think of the names off hand since it's been at least 7 years since I've listened to them. I really like Dominoes and Dark Globe, so those two are not the suspects I'm thinking of. The whole Dark Side of the Moon is "selling out". Money is cringeworthy too, but it has borderline recognisable melody and rhythm. TGGITS is simply awful, with that bunch of notes from nowhere and that prolonged howling. A real wolf would have been much better. P.S. On the other hand, with a real wolf they might have reserved that song for Animals, so destroying the beauty of that album...

Imho the main reason of Mike's obsession with Brian's drug use is his delusion that without drugs Brian would never have stepped out of that "room" where they used to write songs together. For him it's impossible to realise that Brian had already outgrown him in 1965, and would have left anyway, out of plain artistic necessity.
Mike just managed to make the process so much more painful.

Hell, the BW suite of songs at the end of surf's up is epic!
Yes, there is nothing in the world like the "A Day in the Life of a Tree - 'Til I Die - Surf's up" tryptic. Though Brian managed to come near it many years later with "From There to Back Again - Pacific Coast Highway - Summer's Gone". Well, I think it's my turn to contribute something else than cheerleading now. I'll mention three things from my favourite Brian, the "lunar" one: Wind Chimes (Smiley version) The Fairy Tale Music (condensed "Mount Vernon and Fairway") in the GV box Night Bloomin' Jasmine section in Rio Grande There is not enough of this kind of stuff around.

Well, he had good taste then. Wonder what he would have made of the stereo mix?
The original version, in all its mono glory is my favourite BB album also, amd Wind Chimes is one of the greatest thing ever put to tape by anyone, ever.
IMO
I agree! Smiley Smile is a crowning achievement, and Wind Chimes... oh, don't even let me get started about Wind Chimes.

The entirety of Brian's 'Still I Dream of It' demo. I've probably never heard a more honest song in my life (both vocally and lyrically). This is one song I wish to god that Brian would re-record for his upcoming rock and roll album (even just as an exclusive bonus track). Put some crazy beautiful strings in there, harpsichord, wall of Brian harmonies, etc. Could be won-won-wonderful. edit: for anyone who hasn't heard it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKEsehvPOvM" Still I dream of it, of that happy day when I can say I've fallen in love And it haunts me so, like a dream that's somehow linked to all the stars above" Some of the best lyrics in the entire Beach Boys catalog. The first time I heard "It's Over Now" and "Still I Dream of It" I was horrified. How wrong I was! Now they are among my favourites, particularly "Still I Dream of It".

However, I think the Smiley Smile board is perfectly OK, and this same very lively thread is proof of it. The "traffic" may be 10% lower (maybe), but the.... well, let's be kind and just say "the signal to noise ratio"... is 1000% higher (well, 970% after my "contributions" here).
