451  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 18: Chicago Theatre - Chicago, IL 5/22/12 on: May 23, 2012, 05:34:35 PM
My mother is a fan of the group, too, so she'll be enjoying Darien Lake right there with me.  At sixty years old, and walking with a cane, there's no way she could stand the whole time and dance like I know she'd love to, and at only 5'2'', someone standing in front of her will be blocking her view.  Here and there, of course (especially during the most beloved numbers), we're more than cool.  Blocking her view for the whole show becomes a problem when you can't be considerate enough to think about the other guy (even after being gently reminded).

Another thing to maybe keep in mind is that while this is a rock show, and no opera, it's also a show that will inevitably be filled by ian audience with its share of near-retirement to full-on senior citizens just who can't be expected to enjoy the show in the same way as some who may be younger, healthier, etc.  You paid your $ and should be able to stand and dance, but so did every other person sitting around you.  Reading some of these posts from self-absorbed folks just leaves me kind of shaking my head, to be honest.  I mean, the lack of common freaking courtesy for others.

And someone mentioned the drunks - boy, the people who may be perfectly nice, but turn into drunk a-holes, embarassing themselves, bumping into people, spilling their drinks and shouting out every word of every number (off key) until they're hoarse are just the worst kind of concert-goers to be near, huh?  I'm a musician who likes to study the artists I enjoy most in a live context, but even minus that, I think most folks probably go to these shows to be transported to a place of musical wonder by the band, though I do recognize that some just like to party.

Hey, here's a thought.  Why not dance in the aisles during the numbers where not everybody is up and groovin' it?  Last time I saw Ringo in Canandaigua, that was what I saw happen and it looked like a nice compromise.  I remember thinking maybe the ushers would try to keep them clear, but even they didn't seem to mind.  Is that cool, mister and missus dance-alot?  Whichever side you're on, enjoy the show, but maybe just try not to forget the other guy!

Love and respect.

Yeah, I was hoping to learn more aout this period of the group from two of these specials (It's OK and Going Platinum), but I've only found a little bit on youtube.  I'm just learning of Our Team (love this site), but would like to find out more.  A pm or maybe a B+P would be really nice.

Ooh, edit - From this time period I did enjoy this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qb9vV-H9ec after stumbling across it last night.  Really nice job with the edit.  I especially like the sort of trippy effect from watching Dennis (who looks great here, by the way) during the extended drumming sequences.

"Wonderful" would be just that, and thank you, AndrewHickey for taking the time to respond to my questions.  You know, I could've sworn that I'd heard that most of the Love / Johnston band were to be playing and then sometime yesterday or last night (on Fallon, maybe?) I heard Mike mention something to the effect that it was mostly Brian's people.  After my surprise wore off, one of my next thoughts was of my post here. Smiley

Even if it has been a long time (or maybe because it has) since they've been performed, I still think it would be a real shame not to have some of these great numbers played.

I'm dying for the fellas to play "Surf's Up," and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here who's surprised that it hasn't been played.  To be perfectly honest, I thought it would be there almost every night of the tour - a nod to TSS, and a centerpiece of the set.  I suppose the thing I didn't factor in was that it's not Brian's band (who would know the number back and forth by now) that are backing the 'Boys.  I suppose it's entirely possible that the Love / Johnston band have never even given the song a walk-thru before.  I have no idea, but is this likely why we've not seen it happen?

Given the talent level of the group, there's no reason to think they couldn't pull it off with a little rehearsal, and even if they just do it just once, as long as it's captured on camera and we get it released at a later date, then I'll be happy.

That said (and I've mentioned this before), June 29th - Darien Lake, NY sure would be a good time to unveil it!

Oh, and I really dig "Shut Down."

That's certainly all well and true, Luther - especially maybe the latter Wink - and yes, there was most assuredly a trade-off to be made in order for the band to receive a higher measure of label support, but boy oh boy, anyone other than those intimately involved in the production of the music deciding (not suggesting, based on market trends, public opinion polls, casting lots, etc., but having the final say) on what makes the album just really sticks in my craw, and it can have a marked effect on the final product.  The most cited example, I imagine, would be Capitol's dealing with the early Beatles output.  Personally speaking, even after years of trying to get used to it, I still prefer The Beatles / G. Martin's vision of their work vs. just about any of the choices that Capitol made (although I do prefer having "IWTHYH" on Meet The Beatles).

Even with a decidedly up and down history of commercial success, the Beach Boys are not, of course, unknown, hungry artists without a leg to stand on, and I would think they were in a better bargaining position than that when they signed this deal.  Still, the plain truth is that, as a fan, I'm not in the know here, and it's entirely possible that the group feels that they will be somehow better served this way, and if that is their feeling, then I'll support it and defend it, even if I don't understand the motivations behind it.

All that said, this is still just a very long-winded way of saying I want my Brian Wilson suite!

Oh, that and, I like the idea behind the album cover, and was quite pleasantly surprised with the colourful ocean waves / teardrops / boobies and/or buttcheecks, but the big, ungainly band logo doesn't jibe well and needs to be rethought for a better fit.  Oops!  Looky there, here I am -  uninvolved with the production of the work, dictating my input.  :D  Oh well, I'm right on this one!

Counting myself as both one of the world's biggest Beatles fans and a shameless BrianistaTM Cool Guy, the thought of the band's final (?) lp culminating in a Brian Wilson-penned suite sounded like sheer brilliance, and serves as absolutley my most looked-forward-to aspect of the album.  Even though "My Life Suite" always did sound like a working title, I've grown so accustomed to seeing the phrase in print and spun fancifully around in my mind over these past few weeks that it has somehow endeared itself to me, and I couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy at it not appearing on Amazon's tracklisting.

I'm with the rest of you supposing that we're just witnessing a title change, but make no mistake, there is a group of untold millions who will rise up in righteous indignation and march on the tower, pitchforks and torches in tow, should our beloved little suite not feature on the album (so don't say we didn't warn you).

Hey, by the way, just who was it that decided it was a good idea to yield the artistic decision of which numbers would make the cut to the label anyway?  After all, economics aside, it should be an artistic decision, yes?
457  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2012 Celebration Concerts. Smiley Smilers Suggestions Thread (non setlist) on: April 25, 2012, 10:45:51 AM
I didn't read through all of the ideas that have been shared yet, but I did have a couple of thoughts as to what I'd like to see.

01.  Personally, as a nod to last Autumn's release, I'd love for the guys to include songs like "Cabinessence", "Wonderful", "Our Prayer" and (most of all) "Surf's Up" as a regular part of their set.  The early setlist returns from opening night (while awfully encouraging) didn't include these songs, and I think that it would be a gesture really welcomed by the crowd (as an aside, the vibrations I'm picking up are telling me that June 29th, in some place called Darien Lake, NY would be just a great time to perform "Surf's Up" - not quite sure what to make of it, but fellas, if somehow you're reading this, it might be a good idea).  Grin

02.  I think it would be really cool for the band to play a few shows in Hawaii.  As an upstate New York land-lubber, I'm sold on the magical image of the place, and to me, just as California is the epicenter of the fun and sun side of the Beach Boys, Hawaii suggests the spiritual essence of the ocean, and of the group.  Also, it occurs to me that, while admittedly unsubtle, there are worse ways of celebrating fifty years together as a group than by ending your tour playing in the 50th state.

03.  I think we all want this, but I'm really rooting for a blu ray concert release at the end of all this.  If not all taken from one terrific show, I'd like to see the performances come from different venues and cities that say 'Beach Boys' (Los Angeles, hopefully Hawaii).  Failing that, places / performances of note (NYC, hopefully Europe, opening night, closing night of the tour, etc.) would be welcome.
458  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: April 24, 2012, 11:45:57 PM
Great post, Mr. Desper.  Wish I had had a Dad who bothered to be around more - someone who could have offered me this kind of advice as I was growing up.  Your views on gratitude, kindness and empathy are right on.

Like everyone here, music is one of my greatest thrills, and creating it is my bliss.  Your advice to say 'yes' has really hit home, as I cannot deny that while I've spent years honing my songcraft, I'm guilty of allowing fears to keep me from taking advantage of opportunities.  Writing and recording (for the sake of the act, more than anything, I suppose) are my joys, and I tend to shy away from public performance at times.  As far as forging a career out of it, making contacts, self-promotion and the hustle are things I'm just not enough of an extrovert to pull off, I guess.  Still, I wish I had been more willing to say 'yes' when I was younger.  Maybe I could have gotten the word out and brought a little enjoyment to folks.  Now, at 36, I just feel so old sometimes.

Okay, I'm rambling now, but my point is that you've given me things to think about.  As a new father myself, I have the grand chance to pass on what I've learned to my little girl, and your post has left me inspired.  More than anything, I just wanted to say thanks.

By the way, I'm looking forward to trying Stephen Desper's virtual band exercise soon. Smiley

Glorious!  With the release of TSS eminent, we've naturally witnessed a lot of discussion about the potential for "holy grail" unearthings.  Sure I would love to hear "Surf's Up (2nd movement)," but for my money, period film of the Beach Boys recording in the studio (particularly takes of "Good Vibrations") more than qualifies.

What a time, no?
