26  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Stack-O-Tracks on: May 26, 2008, 09:00:13 AM
Actually, a very good record to turn low and study to.  This is a more recent discovery of mine  Cheesy

Of course, I find it confusing when looking at the choice of tracks here and it's really the job of more comprehensive collections to fulfill this role rather than offering a comparatively small total of 15 tracks.  A very shallow dip into the Beach Boys catalogue by this point, to be sure.

Best to worst:
Busy Doin' Nothin'
Little Bird
Wake the World
Friends
Diamond Head
Meant for You
Anna Lee, the Healer
Be Here in the Mornin'
Passing By
When a Man Needs a Woman
Be Still
Transcendental Meditation

I guess I agree with this.  I'd place 'Friends' a little higher perhaps - the 'Let's be friends' plea is just irresistible.  It's real tough to pick favourites but I do think that 'Be Still' and 'TM' are considerably weaker than the rest of the record.

'Little Bird', by the way - is a revelation, people must've scratched their heads wondering where that one came from.  Unfortunately, I think that Be Still lets Dennis down.

In the liner notes to the twofer, Brian speaks of his writing process for the album.  At the time, this was interesting to me, as I had assumed (as so many have) that he just spent the latter part of the 60's as a recluse.  The find that this was another thoughtfully constructed and cohesive Brian-dominated album was, for me at the time, rather surprising.

I wouldn't necessarily call the track 'feel good' or even 'formulaic'.

In my opinion, the music has a very strange, almost trippy quality to it - tumbling all over the place.  The pace is just slow enough to make you feel almost uneasy.  Of course, the lyrics are standard fare, but the back track itself sounds like a little experiment.

Perhaps it's only me that feels this way!

The 'final' Velvet Underground album 'Squeeze' fronted by Doug Yule has been erased from history pretty effectively.  Until recently the last Clash album 'Cut the Crap' was also effectively forgotten.

I think that if a record becomes out of print, and there's no one with enough passion or even monetary interest to get it out into the public again, then indeed - the album is effectively forgotten.  It's certainly difficult to discover something that isn't being sold anymore, and that didn't create a big impact in its own time.

If it weren’t for the quality of POB, as well as its cult status, would anyone give a damn?

There's not always a deliberate move to erase records from history - but sometimes I think it's even harder to keep selling some in particular.

They do cover Surf City on thier late 80s covers album.  It's pretty neat too!

I'm at university at the moment, so my BB collection is on my hard drive, with the artwork left back home.

I'm making a surf compilation for a friend of mine going away for a surfing trip and was going to inclue the amusing list of 'surf terminology' found on the back of the Surfin Safari LP.

If anyone could copy and post the list here, or post a scan - that'd be fantastic!

Many thanks

I thought that 2008 was panning out too well.

POB and new Brian Wilson?  ...perhaps we're simply not allowed both!
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Completing my BB Collection. on: November 10, 2007, 03:39:19 AM
Hi there.  I’m new on the board and was hoping you guys could answer some questions on completing my BB collection.

I've been buying the BB back catalogue over the past three years or so and now own all the Capitol/Brother re-issues up to 15 Big Ones/Love You (Minus the live albums).  I also have Endless Harmony Soundtrack and Hawthorne CA, and am going to treat myself to the Good Vibrations box set for Christmas.

I was wondering where to go from here, I don’t much feel like touching anything after 1977, but I'm sure there are still songs from the early 70s that I don't have.  Are there any key bootlegs and live shows that I should try to track down? And if so, where can I start to look? eBay just seems to have official releases.

Also, seeing as the Good Vibrations set wasn't re-mastered in 2001 along with the rest of the catalogue, how does its sound quality hold up to the rest of the re-issued collection?

Thank for your help!
