151  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Murry Wilson song on British 78 on eBay on: October 25, 2008, 03:23:21 PM
I don't think any of our British friends have noticed this yet, as there are no bids placed.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350112294500

This is a 78 from the mid-50s, featuring Murry Wilson's "Two Step, Side Step" as recorded by country artist Bonnie Lou.  The seller obviously doesn't know the Beach Boys connection, so it's pretty cheap.  I'd bid on it myself, except that the seller only ships to the U.K. and I'm stateside.

They're nothing new.  All three songs were released on The Honeys Collection CD that Collector's Choice Music released back in 2000.  Here's a link:

153  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love on Bruce & Terry's "Custom Machine"? on: October 02, 2008, 03:05:41 AM
Can anyone confirm what my ears are telling me?

Is that Mike Love on Bruce & Terry's cover of "Custom Machine," singing the line "Step on the gas, she goes ..."?  It sure sounds like it to me, but I can't find confirmation anywhere.

This link at Barnes & Noble.com plays a 30-second sample of the song that includes the line in question:

154  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BLUE? vinyl 45 on: September 18, 2008, 12:13:13 PM
Yes, I got mine.  I bought the CD/DVD and got the signed blue vinyl on 9/11 in the mail.

So they do exist!  Are they identical to the orange vinyl 45s?  Two songs on the B-side?  Or just one like was indicated on Brian's website?
155  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BLUE? vinyl 45 on: September 17, 2008, 10:59:47 AM
It's now been two weeks since TLOS came out, certainly enough time for Control to have shipped their orders.  So let's ask again:

Has anybody received one of the BLUE vinyl 45s that was being offered as a premium when you purchased the album through Briian's website?  There are eight of the orange vinyl promo 45s for sale on eBay, but I've yet to hear confirmation on a blue vinyl 45.

And for what it's worth, Brian's website no longer mentions the 45.
156  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TLOS: any comments from Mike, Al or Bruce yet? on: September 13, 2008, 09:37:36 PM
Over on the BBB board, Bruce was asked:

"Have you heard Brian's new album? Any thoughts you would like to share with us?"

His one-word response:

"Remarkable!"
157  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BLUE? vinyl 45 on: September 02, 2008, 09:22:44 AM
If you pre-ordered TLOS through Brian's website, you're supposed to get a "limited edition colored vinyl single" of Midnight's Another Day, according to the initial website page.  After entering the website, it states that the record actually is a "limited edition translucent blue vinyl single" with Morning Beat on the B-side.  Has anybody received theirs yet?

The reason I ask is that today I received a "care package" from a contact at Capitol.  Inside was a vinyl LP of TLOS, plus a promo 45 (in the same picture sleeve pictured on Brian's website) of Midnight's Another Day b/w Midnight Beat AND That Lucky Old Sun!  And it's on translucent ORANGE vinyl!!

Is this the same "limited edition" 45 that you get with the pre-order?  Is the website wrong about the color?  Or is this yet another TLOS collectible?

Who was the engineer at Columbia then who would have overseen the eight track mixdown with Brian?

I believe that would still be Chuck. Boy genuises making millions of dollars for a company, can sometimes have union rules "relaxed" by said company... Wink

Bruce has stated that Brian wasn't allowed to work the board at Columbia because of company and union rules.  So I can't imagine that they would have allowed an employee (Britz) of a competitor (Western) to work the board either.  Which leads back to my basic question: If Summer Days and Pet Sounds were mixed at Columbia directly from the 8-track master, who actually worked the board and did the mixing?  I have no problem believing Brian supervised, but based on what Bruce has said, I doubt very much that either he or Britz did the actual board work.
160  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian and Curt Boettcher on: August 19, 2008, 09:58:18 AM
Another guy who seems to have been part of the California Music collective was a guitarist/singer named Bill House. Bruce Johnston produced an album for him which I believe was part of the Equinox label deal. I no longer have the album, but it did feature a pretty good song called 'Common Thief' which later re-surfaced on one of the two David Cassidy albums which Bruce produced. Bill House was all over those records, too.

Bill House could be called a member of Equinox' Wrecking Crew along with John Hobbs, Jimmy Seiter, Stan House (his brother) and Curtis Stone. They played on most of the Equinox productions.

The first of the various Equinox albums was Barry Mann's great Survivor, which was released on RCA, but had production credited to "Bruce Johnston & Barry Mann/Equinox Records, Inc."

On Survivor, Bill House and company are listed as "The Roadhouse Band" -- the five named by dogear plus Kenny Hinkle (one of the singers on the California Music version of "Don't Worry Baby") on guitar.  The Roadhouse Band, along with Bruce and Terry, is credited as appearing "through the courtesy of Equinon Records, Inc."

Interestingly, the credits on the Barry Mann album read like a Who's Who of Beach Boys-connected musicians -- session players Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Larry Knechtel, Ray Pohlman, Lyle Ritz, Steve Douglas, Jay Migliori, Dick Hyde and Igor Horoshevsky; plus Beach Boys band members Mike Kowalski, Ed Carter, Daryl Dragon, Toni Tennille and Joel Peskin; not to mention former Beach Boys Bruce Johnston and Blondie Chaplin.
161  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about the \ on: August 19, 2008, 09:25:11 AM
Or did they go through a convoluted process, like having Ralph Balantin mix the 8-track masters back down to 3-track, then have Brian and Britz do the final mixes at Western?

That was always the impression I had

So, for both Summer Days and Pet Sounds, at one time there existed an 8-track master tape (with the instrumental backing on one track and vocals on the other seven tracks), a 3-track sub-master (with the instrumental backing on one track and vocals mixed down to two tracks), and a final mono mixdown?  Sounds crazy.  Wouldn't it have been easier just to make the final mono mix directly from the 8-track master?  It certainly would have improved the sonics, as the final mix would be one less generation away from the actual recording.
162  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about the "Summer Days" album mixdown on: August 18, 2008, 02:33:03 PM
Brian and Chuck Britz.

Where and how?  Britz recorded the instrumental tracks at Western Recorders, then Brian (with, I think, Ralph Balantin engineering) added the vocals at Columbia Studios.  So the final pre-mix song masters were on 8-track, right?  But Western didn't have an 8-track at the time, so it seems unlikely that Brian and Britz would have been able to mix as they had for previous albums.

If the final mixes were done at Columbia, how could Britz (a Western employee) have been involved?  We've heard stories (from Bruce Johnston) about how Columbia was a "tight" company/union operation; if you weren't a union member and company employee, you couldn't touch the board -- which means Brian couldn't have done the mixdown at Columbia either.

So who did it?  Or did they go through a convoluted process, like having Ralph Balantin mix the 8-track masters back down to 3-track, then have Brian and Britz do the final mixes at Western?  That would seem kind of anal, but it's one possibility I've heard mentioned.

The same kind of situation would have existed for Pet Sounds, too.  The final song masters would have been on 8-track, but Western didn't have an 8-track machine, so the final mixes couldn't have been done there.  So where were they done and who manned the board?

Who mixed the Summer Days (and Summer Nights) album?
164  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Official Beach Boys 'Smile' - why no mention?! on: August 18, 2008, 07:57:01 AM
I searched for it but couldn't find it...

Search on "Beach Boys."  Then, in the "Related" group in the results, click on "World of the Beach Boys." On the displayed page, scroll down to "The Beach Boys Play Smile" and click on the picture.

That's the only way I can find it!
165  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beachboys? on: July 24, 2008, 10:45:24 PM
It's in a book. But the focus is not on the Pendletones, so no one is really noticing it. Or, at least, it hasn't stood out yet.

Page 28 of Robert Dalley's Surfin' Guitars: Instrumental Surf Bands of the Sixties (Popular Culture Ink, 1996).  But it's not from the fall of 1961.  It's for a show on Friday, May 18 (no year given).  The headline act is The Belairs, with the rest of the bill being The Journeymen, The Vibrants and The Pendletons (NOT The Pendletones).

May 18 fell on a Friday in 1962, so that pins down the year.  Furthermore, the same book depicts posters for shows March 16-18 and April 18, 1962, with The Belairs headlining and The Beach Boys second on the bill.  So it would seem VERY unlikely that The Pendletons on the poster would be an early version of The Beach Boys, as they were already being billed under the latter name by that time!
166  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New US singles box-set on: July 13, 2008, 05:49:58 PM
If there's a longer fade on the master and all (except for Steve's) releases of Good Vibrations have the same fade, either the mastering notes clearly state where the fade is to fall, and all engineers have followed that information, OR possibly a dub of the single master was made with the fade in place and that's been used for subsequent releases.  There are sometimes "LP masters" which are already mastered to specification for transfer to vinyl with EQ, fades, etc., that are one generation down from the master tape.  Perhaps there is a similar "single master dub" for Good Vibrations.

The abrupt fade on GV no doubt originated with concerns that the song was too long already, and shaving whatever they could off the fade could only help with shortening it to make it more radio friendly.  But the DCC version with the gradual fade fits the song and likely was Brian's choice for the fade.

Okay, let's get the mystery of the "long" GV master resolved once and for all.  This is from e-mail correspondence I had with Steve Hoffman almost eight years ago:

I asked him: "How did you get away with that longer 'GV' on ENDLESS SUMMER?"

He responded: "Regarding 'Good Vibrations', I made an edit using one of the BB's CD's that had the instrumental tracks from G.V.  I just spliced on the longer fadeout. I always thought that the thing faded out too soon.  Just my little jolly....."

Mystery solved.

Do we have a definitive timing on the version included on the old Japanese singles collection, as well as a timing on the original mono vinyl 45?

"California Girls" on the 3-CD Japanese Single Collection clocks in at 2:48, with the music fading out at 2:44 -- identical (for all practical purposes) to the version on the 1999 Greatest Hits Vol. 1 CD.

Unfortunately, the audio system to which my turntable is attached is out of commission at the moment (a blown amplifier), so I can't give you a timing on the original 45.
168  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New US singles box-set on: July 11, 2008, 08:22:18 PM
I got a hold of the 1999 "Greatest Hits Vol 1" CD the other day.

"California Girls" on that compilation clocks in at 2:38, one second more than the track on the singles set.  It's the same mix, mastered a little differently.  The fade is almost identical.

Hmmm...

My copy of the 1999 Greatest Hits Vol. 1 CD has "California Girls" clocking in at 2:45, with the music actually fading completely out at 2:43.

My copy of the 1995 20 Good Vibrations: The Greatest Hits CD has "California Girls" clocking in at 2:38, with the music fading out at 2:35.

Alan, is it possible that you got hold of the wrong issue of the set?  The easiest way to tell the difference is by the last four songs.  The 1999 CD ends with: Wouldn't It Be Nice/God Only Knows/Good Vibrations/Kokomo.  The 1995 CD ends with: 409/God Only Knows/Catch a Wave/Kokomo.
169  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: new comp announced - June 10 - U.S. Singles on: April 09, 2008, 11:01:05 PM
Its probably sixteen CD singles in tiny reprinted picture sleeves.

This seems especially likely, considering that there were EXACTLY 16 Capitol 45s originally issued with picture sleeves:

 1. "Surfin' Safari" b/w "409"
 2. "Ten Little Indians" b/w "County Fair"
 3. "Fun, Fun, Fun" b/w "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"
 4. "I Get Around" b/w "Don’t Worry Baby"
 5. "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" b/w "She Knows Me Too Well"
 6. "Wendy"/"Don't Back Down" b/w "Little Honda"/"Hushabye"
 7. "Dance, Dance, Dance" b/w "The Warmth of the Sun"
 8. "Do You Wanna Dance?" b/w "Please Let Me Wonder"
 9. "Help Me, Rhonda" b/w "Kiss Me, Baby"
10. "California Girls" b/w "Let Him Run Wild"
11. "The Little Girl I Once Knew" b/w "There's No Other (Like My Baby)"
12. "Barbara Ann" b/w "Girl Don't Tell Me"
13. "Sloop John B" b/w "You're So Good to Me"
14. "Good Vibrations" b/w "Let's Go Away For Awhile"
15. "Heroes and Villains" b/w "You’re Welcome"
16. "Darlin'" b/w "Here Today"

171  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian songs from the Landy era on: October 30, 2007, 04:52:50 PM
What's up with the "Good Night Irene" credit? That doesn't make sense, unless it's the copyright to a recorded performance as opposed to a songwriting credit. Because obviously neither BW nor Landy wrote it.

I'm guessing it's like "Sloop John B" -- a "traditional" song in the public domain, for which Brian wrote a new arrangement.  That would allow him to copyright his version of the song.

As for "Games Two Can Play," I'd guess either Brian & Landy rewrote it or it's an entirely different song by the same name.  Who knows?

Here's some interesting information ...

From the Library of Congress copyright records ...

In March 1999, through six documents, Gene Landy and his girlfiend, Alexandra Morgan, assigned their share of the copyrights to 213 musicial compositions Shocked to Brian. All of these songs originally were credited to Brian and Landy, with Morgan also credited on 43 of them. A handful also carried credits for various third parties - Jardine, Usher, etc. (those credits remain intact, by the way).
