Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's on Brian's Ipod?
|

That's what Michael DeMartin wrote on the Pet Sounds Blog: "I asked him [Brian] if he knew what an iPod was, and he said he didn't. This surprised me a little: I wouldn't expect him to have one, but I figured maybe Melinda – or certainly one of their daughters would. In any case, I showed him my iPod and I told him there were 500 record albums on it. He said he couldn't believe it [ ]– I mean it is kind of a hard concept to get after you've grown up with LPs most of your life."

Well sure, if you were showing him a vintage 60s/70s single-LP pressing, and his book is describing that era's releases thusly, the book is wrong Yes, sure, it was a 60s pressing he told me, not the anniversary one (a PS freak like would have recognised it from a mile's distance ) I told him a true mix wasn't done until 1996 by Mark Linett and so forth, you know the story... but it had no effect on him. and he's nucking futs to yell at you He can't cope with the fact that someone 40 years younger than him knows much more than him... He said "The company ALWAYS released stereo records in the sixties. Especially psychadelic LPs like Pet Sounds." - I immediatelly replied "Well, basically PS was not psychadelic, maybe just a little bit... it rather had a baroque touch and that prominent wall of s..." - "NO, PET SOUNDS WAS PSYCHADELIC!" Hahaha... strange people out there... Thanks a lot for your answer!

Dr. Tim: [...] The clerk (after checking a book) swore on his mother's grave that it was a legit stereo issue. I sampled it (w/headphones) at a listening station and lo and behold: it was Duophonic. Duophonic = sonic garbage.
That's what happened to me yesterday. I went to a good old record store and found a copy of a UK pressing of Pet Sounds. I told the owner it wasn't true stereo. He also checked a book and told me that I was wrong. After I had explained to him all the details for 10 minutes or something, I gave up. He wouldn't listen. He thought I was nuts and started screaming (!) at me that PS was "IN STEREO! PERIOD!" Oh my...

After the first series of 2fers went out of print some genius at Capitol decided to issue the Capitol CD's as single album CD's without bonus tracks. These were replaced with the new remasterings of the 2fers. Thanks! I got the single CD of Smiley Smile with the Brother, not Capitol, label on the CD just because it's cool. Same mastering as the original 2fers. No stereo Today has ever been released - though Sea of Tunes issued a stereo Today/Summer Days Summer Nights with most, but not all, of the tracks in some kind of stereo (many were instrumentals though).
Hmmm... just checked - it says "Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo". Strange. Made me wonder, since I there's no way of mastering Today or Summer Days in real stereo. (I'm familiar with the SOT version, you're right - the vocals are missing, what a pitty )

Thank you, Mr. Stebbins...! I underline every word you wrote. The Beach boys won't be entirely dead until there is just one of them left, and then it will be the Beach Boy. And when that one goes it will be a sad, sad day because they were something really special. I say enjoy any last traces of them if you can, while you can.
Don't even wanna think about it... That day is going to come, and it's going to be the horror. I'm so glad I had the opportunity of meeting Brian Wilson, even though that moment lasted for only two minutes. But the memory will remain forever - and that's the only thing that really really matters! And as long as the music's in our hearts... (Yeah, I know it sounds cheesy...)

Another one for the 'sounds a bit like...' discussion: the section before the chorus in good kind of love (she keeps it in a jar but not too far etc) is almost identical in melody and chords to the verse of brian's back (we once took a cab out of salt lake city now)
Oh I'm so glad that I finally found somebody who thinks the same about this (short) vocal line! The first time I heard this section I was sure I'd heard it before...

I'm oddly facinated with "Oh Lord". On one hand, Brian's voice is REALLY shot, and the demo is long and unfocused. But, Brian did sing the demo with passon, like he really meant it. It's beautiful and haunting, but also sad all in one.
Yes, yes and yes - Brian's voice on this one is so passionate it almost hurts! Well, that sounds like the "interview" Les Chan and friends did with Brian in his hotel room, San Carlos, December '81.
That's the Les Chan interview for sure. I think Brian also mentioned Carl's album? .

I like how tender Brian's voice sounds in some parts, I don't even think he did that in SMiLE. Not that this is better than SMiLE or anything, but I love the stuff towards the end of Oxygen to the Brain, for instance. And of course MAD he sounds pretty tender in. I haven't heard him use his voice so expressively on anything new he's done.
Good call Ron, I hear this too...the "Wilson" timbre is really heard again... beautiful. Oh yes, indeed! Some notes are a bit shaky, but then Brian pulls it of with "... made me feel so aloooone"... precious!

You're right, Mike... Perhaps Marilyn was looking for something "normal". Of course, Brian loved his daughters and cared for them, but in the end he was preoccupied with himself and his mental problems and didn't have the motivation to take an active part in this whole 'family thing'. And after realizing Brian would never be the same again, Marilyn also gave up on the marriage... What impact it had on Brian? That's really difficult to answer... I mean, he lost his first true and serious love (we're not talking about Carol Mountain, the girl he had a crush on ... Oh Carol, I know... ) -- and Marilyn had always been the only person in his life he could completely trust. But that's only my opinion...

Yeah, it's great. I just wish Leaving This Town and Funky Pretty weren't included.
Sorry but LTT is one of my favorites, especially the ecstatic organ solo. I prefer this version to the original one from Holland. Yes, I also think this version of LTT is amazing! And Trader just blew my mind... love the harmonies on that one!
