1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why I like the Beach Boys on: January 19, 2008, 02:45:44 PM
There's a book, a work of fiction titled 'Boy's Life' by Robert McCammon. In the course of that tale, one of the characters hears the Beach Boys recording of I Get Around for the very first time. His reaction to it very much resembles my own first experience. It's impossible for me to describe it, but that account has always stayed with me and is probably the main reason I love the music.

I think that the strength of DENNIS WILSON FOREVER (and what makes it worth watching) is that  it's quite intimate. There seem to be very few allusions about Dennis and his life.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis & his drums (someone please gimme some input) on: November 23, 2007, 03:25:24 PM
I have it on reasonably good authority, that Dennis used Yamaha drums during the latter part of his career - probably a 'Recording Custom' set - but I can't vouch for that. However, an interview on the Mike Kowalski website provides some support for this: http://www.bigbeatman.com/
I don't know if it's of any interest or not, but I've been told that during soundchecks, Dennis was consistent and easy to deal with. And so regardless of his drumming ablity/lifestyle, he was relatively a good pro.
I think also that Promark(?) did a limited edition of Dennis Wilson sticks.

Wembley Arena, London 1991 sucked big time...  <snipped>

I remember this show quite well. The inclusion of Adrian Baker during the encore of Fun, Fun. Fun (and playing one of the band 330s) only added to the general apathy of the band that evening. In my opinion, of course...

The Honeys & American Spring rock.. Much better voices than that of the Ronettes, Crystals etc.. in my opinion

The worst thing about the Honeys and American Spring is their voices. Shrill, that's probably the best word to describe their singing. They sing like bored housewives. No soul. I really don't understand how you can compare them to Ronnie Spector or Darlene Love, who are probably the best singers from that girl group era.

Yes, while everyone has different tastes, perhaps mikeyj could have another listen to Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love - and how their voices were employed by Phil Spector.
