dud, chill; you could just stop the cd at that point.

Why is it a weak track, I don't get it.

QUESTIONs...

1)  Is the AF mastered in HDCD?
2)  If so, I'm surprised.  Isn't Hoffman and crew anti-hdcd?  Something about HDCD being lower quality on non-hdcd players.

I personally like HDCD.  I have a HDCD-capable player...and I think there's a little more fullness and depth on the HDCD discs.  A little less flat...more 3-D.

Yes, the CD is HDCD encoded.  I know there are differing opinions as to whether the encoding affects the sound when played back on non-HDCD equipment, but the fact that both Hoffman and Linnett are reguarly using it makes me think it doesn't adversely affect it.  At least I've never noticed anything "wrong" while playing back any of Linnett's HDCD discs back on non-HDCD players.
I agree with your assessments as well - that playing HDCD discs on non-HDCD equipment is fine.  I just thought that it was the Hoffman-folks who railed against it.  Well, great I guess it's settled!

yeah the hoffmen guys rail against alot of stuff they just don't understand; now hdcd is ok 'cause hoff does it.  furthermore, I would'nt take anything the man says with a grain of salt.

I still think the best version is the CATP vinyl twofer, but that's me, I've never heard a bad version of this album.

Can anyone give a list of the "Easter Egg" hidden tracks on the 2000 remasters?

there's a california girls sessions snippet at the end of the party!  cd.  Don't remember any others though.

so, basically the cuts that were lobbed off the 80's issues were on this?  Could you let me know if the stuff on this is in mono,  when you get it?

Anybody have the Simply Vinyl 180 gram release?  How is the sound on it?

the problem with the SV release is that essentially its the cd version put to vinyl and its expensive.  there are some great versions which go for alot less.

anyone know what was on this  vinyl compilation from 1982?  it has an interesting cover, comes with a green label, too.  I could never find a track list for this.

thanks

I think its the single SOT label version.  Its got a nice track list, some good stuff on there.  Off the top of my head, its got the "rock me henry" wonderful, stereo versions of some tracks, a bunch of stuff that SOT put together from what they had access to, from the session reels I think, plus some box set stuff too to fill in the gaps.

I'm interested in the 1983 version myself.  Is this the version that had the full color repro booklet?

was "its over now'  intended to be slowed down?

do you know which company is putting the  new ps vinyl out?  wasn't a color vinyl put out by capitol  just 2 years ago?
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: sloop john B with carl and dennis lead? on: July 23, 2008, 07:58:39 AM
were any of the PS sessions released on vinyl in the 80's, or just tape and cd?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: sloop john B with carl and dennis lead? on: July 20, 2008, 10:59:42 AM
oops, i meant on the alternate take of "You still believe';.  so, that one's just single tracked brian.

thanks   Smiley

I noticed that the tracking for 'don't talk'' is absent from the set and all boots that I've seen.  is there any snippet that exists?

also, mike's lead on IWFTD, is this the version with the beach boys where brian wasn't satisfied and erased everyone's vocals and replaced them with his own?

finally, does 'You still believe' on the set feature a diffrent vocalist?
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Song Titles on: July 16, 2008, 04:09:01 PM
didn't it have something to do with when you flip a rock over, there's usually worms underneath?

I just thought it started out on a play on "dig" both as in "use a spade or shovel" and as in "like". "Do You Dig Worms?" in the garden, kinda makes sense, and from there it's a short jump to "dig = like".

forgot about that other title.   that's probably right.  I think those all those titles were brian's along with the windchime lyrics.

isn't there supposed to be an odd growling sound on Hang on to your ego at some point?  i've never heard it/
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sax on California Dreamin'? on: June 07, 2008, 05:30:34 AM
yeah, I think brian usually uses the sax pretty tastefully.  As a bad example, joe thomas' sax solos in imagination.  There was definately a cheesey vibe there.  it can ruin a song for sure.

speaking of the sax in gok, what point in the finished version does it occur.  I cant really imagine a sax there, but maybe it fits?
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sax on California Dreamin'? on: June 06, 2008, 04:56:43 PM
wasn't there gonna be a sax solo on GOk at one point?
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Imagination on: June 05, 2008, 05:38:39 PM
I'd give it a 5 for brian's vocals, but god, those joe thomas tracks sucked.  They were so generic, with cheesy guitar sounds and saxes, it doesn't sound like BW at all.

why does vdp have a gotee?
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE (Late '67) & SMiLE (1972) on: April 18, 2008, 04:35:53 PM
I think the '72 version was supposed to come paired with holland.  Is that right?
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? on: April 18, 2008, 04:30:43 PM
I remember seeing a single brother version back around 2003.  The store had tons of them, but I didn't pick one up at the time.
I just got the SOT vinyl last year at a shop and I think the quality is really good.  Some of the stuff form the box set is in stereo on this one, plus it has a couple unreleased bits like rock me henry.
