Got home yesterday from a whistlestop visit to Boston from the UK to catch Al and the band at Cohasset! Was pleasantly surprised glancing at the setlist before the gig, seeing most of Love You and 3 songs from MIU! I now have a much bigger appreciation for Love You!

The band were in a great form, a few minor mistakes here and there - but it's only their second gig - and lovely to see Matt supporting and covering Al in places. Was so glad to have seen them. Too many highlights to mention, though getting to chat with Darian (and grab a pic!) at the end was so nice.

For those on FB, I posted a number of videos to the 'Celebrating Brian Wilson' group. For those not on FB, you may be able to view the content at https://www.facebook.com/groups/750294851734485/ . I posted lots of pics and 6 or 7 videos (I lost count!).

Laughed at Carl “Cookie” Wilson, never occurred to me that was Carl doubling himself on “Mess of Help”, I never really questioned what that was but it makes for a cool effect!

For some reason I'd always assumed that the gruff voice was Brian!

Are those Humbuckers? The head and obviously the rear body are very different to a Tele.

The headstock looks exactly like my Westone Thunder 1-A (Japanese guitar made in the 80s) which has humbuckers, though all those models had the volume and tone knobs in a straight line.

I was browsing around https://westoneguitars.net/guitars/ to see if I could spot anything similar. The Prestige Series https://westoneguitars.net/guitars/prestige-series/ seems closest, though the colours don't match the model Carl is playing, though I can't easily tell whether the models from other years match. Their 1984 catalog shows this :

Umm, didn’t Bruce play bass live (admittedly a long time ago)? It’s not like he contributes a huge amount on keyboards...

Bruce wore a bass on stage on many occasions...and on more than one, he even plucked it a few times!

But seriously...his instrumental contributions onstage have been non-existent since the early 70's. He clearly doesn't care about it anymore. He's a damn fine pianist...it will forever be mystifying.

I agree totally. Could say the same about his songwriting too (he has a Grammy, apparently  )

In You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone, I think the vocal breakdown from the middle of the song (She don’t know...) is c+p into the fade-out at the end (at least to my ears !)

Darian is back for the Ryman show in Nashville. I was on a tour of the auditorium just now, and he was working through some arrangements with Gary.

I was at the St Petersburg the other night - great show, by the way! - and Probyn was covering on keys & vibes (amongst everything else he plays!) when Gary was otherwise engaged.
