Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Lyrics

I think Mike, like Asher, was good at understanding the feeling BW was trying to convey in a song. I doubt Mike wrote EVERY word, I'm sure Brian had suggestions, etc. (I wonder who wrote the original Lyric for PLMW). But Mike, like a lot of lyricists, seems to be the kind of writer who waits until the last second to finish his words, and maybe that's why some BB songs don't have names when BW is tracking them. But I beleive Mike wrote those songs he claims. There isn't anything so amazing that it would be unbeleivable.

Wow, that seems pretty insane for a major recording artist!. Even Bruce & Terry had access to an eight-track by then.It seems like they made some bad mixing decisions early on that were locked in for all of those tape transfers/overdubs.Still love all of Today but even the drums are distorted on PLMW, even the new stereo mix. Too bad Capitol couldn't lay off Brian and let him take the time he needed to get everything just right...

It seems like these guys were too sheltered and got too rich too young to have any real idea or interset in politics, especially the Wilsons. Bruce can't help but be a jack-ass...I mean Republican, since he's always been rich. Mike and Alan seem like they've taken the time to consider things and, good or bad, glad or sad, they've made informed decisions. But the wilsons...I think they were/are too caught up in being Wilsons and artists to ever have had any real feelings about politics, and I think that's awesome. They were true artists and totally unconcerned with what the times had to offer...Great thread, by the way.

I know this isn't the most amazing topic, but I was listening to Today for the hundred-millienth time and I was once again struck by how muddy an album it is. It's muddyness is made immediately apparent by DYWD. Of all of BW's productions it is by far the muddiest sounding. It doesn't seem to have THAT many instruments happening, so why can I not pick out any of them? Does it have something to do with a more than usual limit to how many tracks they had? Maybe that's why they did All of the vox live. The rest of side one is pretty clean, but side two is a total muddy mess. Was BW just getting used to recording with more instuments, or was he going for some weird Spector thing? Maybe Brian was just in a hurry. Today is still my favorite record of theirs, I just wonder if it could've sounded better.

The Cal. Feeling boot with Denny on the back isn't the same as the 4LP boot series is it? Those all have covers that are just one color with something (brothers logo?) over it, if I remember correctly. The one with Denny came out around the same time as the Brian Loves You boot with BW shirtless and wearing a fireman's helmet on the cover. Anyway, I think they have different tracklists. The one we are talking about is the better one.

Well, I bought it for the stereo mixes and just to show capital that there are people out there who will pay good money for (genuine) new stuff. Anyway... I think there's supposed to be a double track on Brian's lead on PLMW which is missing (probably for the same reason as YSBIM). On Friends it seems like Brian's vocal is clipped off before he says "turned each other on..." which I don't remember...LHRW sounds really good...YSGTM is so-so...Wendy's perfect, except no cough and some punch in sounds around the vox...CCW has a cool edit that I hadn't heard before...forgot how good the single version of WDFFIL is, great intro...I'd ditch 409 and Cal Dreaming for The Lonley Sea and Big Sur(unreleased version). Strange, but I like DGNTW on this comp; somehow it works! Oh, and switch the first and last songs... Aside from all that nit-picking, it is actually a pretty cool CD, especially if you are just a casual fan.

Yeah, me too. I think that whole period, '68-72 was when Carl not only wrote a couple of good songs but also was at the peak of his singing. Actually, everyone was sort of at the peak of their singing! I even like Brian's new keening whine that he had in his falsetto.

It seems like Jan was probably a little more aware of his legacy than the BB. Plus, after the accident, which was less than a decade after everything started for him, he was likely even more concerned with having a say in his history thru documentation. The amount of lawyers, managers, etc. must have grown exponentially for the BB as the years wore on, and all of their documentation is probably scattered far and wide. Jan was J&D, but, aside from the early years, who were the BB? They certainly didn't keep everything in a trunk at their folks' house like I imagine Jan did.

The original mixes are obviously the closest to the artists original conception, but the guys were not above remixing there own tracks when given the opportunity (Surf's Up, Cabinessence, various singles) so it's not a set in stone thing. Most of the remixes so far have been really well done (exceptions=H&V, CG, and YSBIM) and I'm really looking forward to hearing my all time favorite song (PLMW) in a non-muddy sort of way. But didn't this thread have something to do with Carl?

This book is about the songs; how they were structured, what sort of musical devices he was building upon, etc. It is most definitely not meant to be any sort of social history of the guys. The author makes it clear what sources he relied on for the 'historical' parts and even acknowledges the controversial nature of those sources. As we've seen, no BB book has all the facts correct because, at this late date, there aren't any 'facts', just memories (and AFM contracts don't count), so, aside from a few date related issues, what exactly is the problem with this book?( Sorry about that incredibly long run-on sentence!) I don't feel like I was mislead, or even confused, by this book. I t certainly seems better that Priore's latest smile cash-in. One last thing...the potential argument that someone new to the BB might be slightly mislead by this book is far outweighed by the one stating that nobody new to the BB would even know what the hell was being discussed in it. So there.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mixes on Pet Projects?

sorry if this has been covered but...Are the stereo mixes on Pet Projects new, or are they the original? I ask 'cos I noticed that the mix for Shyn'Away is different than on the Spring Plus CD on I can see for miles records. Maybe it's just a better mastering job?

Denny hung out with Fleetwood Mac at the height of their popularity, and at least once with Billy Preston! For rock stars though, these guys were pretty busy. They were ALWAYS touring and recording. I imagine Al was just happy to be at home those rare times when he could! BTW, does anyone know how Mike met all those wives of his?

Yeah, that one seems like a no-brainer. What could the hold up on something like this be? Surely there is a market for this at least as big as The Super Stocks, yet their albums have been released TWICE on cd (though both times were crappy stereo mixes). Between this, the Spring album and Denny's record you'd think we'd get something. Is it really just legal stuff getting in the way?
