Not sure why this has veered off in the direction of doubting the guy’s connections. People sometimes have a funny way of misconstruing something and running with it. I certainly don’t doubt that he has connections, and i don’t see how anyone could doubt that. But who cares? It’s how he behaves, his attitude, and his pettiness that, i think, make him miserable. It was a comment on his general disposition and the sort of pompous role he seems to play in the fan community, not a veiled attempt to coax him into divulging information. On the contrary, it would be cool if he didn’t say anything at all. That is all. Let’s talk about something else, please. I only commented on it because it had already been brought up by someone. How about them surf boyz?
My dear sir, I may be many things, including much of what you say, but miserable I'm not. Especially not right now. Oh no. And would your un-miserableness be related to your having heard a certain new album by a California band? (I feel like one of the panel on the old "What's My Line" tv game show.)

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's problem's...again

Brian and drugs are complicated because for a long time it was easier to claim that you were a drug casualty than to say you were mentally ill. It's a cultural thing, albeit one that has changed.
And it's also possible that those close to Brian and the situation have every incentive to minimize what happened to him -- both in terms of drugs and mental illness -- because no one wants to look bad in retrospect. Just remember that the fact that Brian was institutionalized in the late 60s is a relatively new piece of knowledge -- I don't think that was commonly known until the last 10 years or so. So that was a secret that was held for some 30-plus years.
I think it's difficult to know precisely anything about Brian's "true" mental state, because he's smart and crafty, the people around him have every incentive to mislead (and have for the last 40 years), and the popular entertainment media and fandom prefer compelling, emotional stories to flawed human reality.
I have no problem believing the acid that Brian took may have done permanent damage. This was '60s Owlsley acid, very fucking potent stuff..

I do wonder again how Al is feeling deep down about things.
His songs were apparently cut from the album and yet this made the grade...
I wonder how Al can say "Pet sounds", Bruce can say "Sunflower", Mike can say "Today!" I'd have thought Darian and Scott would whisper into Brian's ear not to do this kind of sh!t And there are two other songs that might go into that direction if we judge by the titles. "Beaches in mind" and "Think about the days". Who wants to have a try at the lyrics ? "Beaches in mind" I got those beaches on my mind, they have nice tans beaches on my mind they walk on the sand those beaches are on the beaches all day long.. those fine sexy beaches are on my mind I want to make love to those beaches all night long. i'm going surfing with the beaches (ooooohhhhhh) those hot fine beaches (oooooohhhhhhh) then we go to the beach.. "Isn't It Time" Isn't it time To have Beaches In Mind On a summer day that's sublime God only knows that it's time (Yes, it's time...) Ohh be true to your pension And the AARP We used to sit in detention But now we are free Isn't it time To go to Kokomo With Brian and Mike Playing a reunion show And a brand new album With some assistance from Joe Isn't it time My 409 is so fine I see some Car Crazy Cuties And they're standing in line For our big 5-0 Our f*ckin' reunion show With Alan, Bruce and Dave And of course, Jeff and Joe Laughing 'till I cry.

Yeh man, the big hits made them money but they only account for 3-5 years of their career, I want them to visit all worthy areas of their music, I hope the reunion covers much of their history, hit or no hit. Most of their music has artistic value (the 80's excepted). Not wanting the surf songs revisiited at the expense of everything else seems entirely reasonable to me.
The surf/car years may have accounted for a small portion of their career but there's no way getting around that this early work is what secured their fame...not neccessarily "Sail on Sailor" or "All This is That." Ya Think?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What was the first song you heard from the Beach Boys? (the first you remember!)

The first songs I remember hearing was in 1964 when my older brother bought the Fun Fun Fun/Why Do Fools Fall In Love 45 single. We wore it out quickly on both sides. My brother playing WDFFIL and me with Fun 3x. I was 6 years old at the time, my bro was 15.
Whoa, doctor. Eerily similar to my story. I was also 6 and my older bro was 15 as well. But, the single was "I Get Around"/ "Don't Worry Baby". I know I knew of the band before then, but this was the record that I really took notice of and made me a fan.

I always liked the ballads with the Brian, Carl, Dennis, and Al leads. Myke's leads were hokey and irritating-like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Oh, come on man, you don't even like Fun Fun Fun or I Get Around? don't think of what your opinion is of those songs now. think about the first 20 or so times you heard them. He says he never liked him.

"Effin" Wilson, Wilson, Wilson, Jardine and Marks-that's how I got into 'em. Luhv never did it for me if that's ok with you, and even if it isn't. Wow, that's quite a feat. Did you just not listen to the songs with Mikes' lead vocals, or to say it another way, 3/4 of their early catalogue. And how about all of those pesky backing vocals of his in the other songs? BTW, is that the "olde English" spelling of Mikes' name you're using?

By 1969 Mike Love was in the centre of his own universe. His ego had been swelled beyond what can be considered normal for a pop/rock artist. His white robe jesus look and eccentric stage personality damaged the reputation of the band. I think that ended witht he Sunflower/SU era. Someone prob told him to shut up (I suspect Dennis) and one sees a much more reclusive figure of Mike in the early 70's. Perhaps he realised that Dennis and Carl really were the main guys. The Inclusion of Ricky and Blondie along with expulsion of friend Bruce probably contributed as well. Thank God.
"Damaged the reputation of the band"? You obviously weren't around back then, were you? I was and he did. Rock and Roll's original jack ass. Nobody's done it as well as Myke. Then you must not have been paying much attention to the bands reputation and career in '68-'69. And if you're that down on "Myke" as you oddly call him, how'd you ever effin' get to be a Beach Boys fan in the first place?

This picture sums it up pretty well.... Mike Love, regardless of the words he wrote for the band early in their career, has given us mostly cheesy, hokey crap for the rest of it. As for the Wal-Mart thing, it's not their fault, it's definitely the record label's. Capitol is going to squeeze as much cash out of the band as they can before the industry completely collapses. What alternate universe have you been dwelling in not to know Mike Love has always been the front man for the Beach Boys? Cheesy and hokey from day one, I guess, but what you probably call the "early" days are in actuality the golden days of the band and Brian both artistically and commercially.. There seems to be a segment of fans of a certain age group that want to rewrite the bands history and cherry pick a small portion of the bands' career o fit their vision of what they think it should have been.

Dude, the Beach Boys are not what you think they are. Here, let me explain better.
"Beach". Lots of their songs are about the Beach. They like the Beach. Some of them LIVE on the Beach. They know there's a surfboard standing behind them. That's because they like Surf Boards. As a matter of fact, they may have requested the Surf Board. Brian Wilson likes Surf Boards.
"Boys". They like the stuff they did when they were young.
-------------
What it comes down to is, your bubble is being busted, you've built this band into something they're not inside your mind. Yes, they did Pet Sounds. Yes, they did "SMiLE". Yes, they did many other things. They also did Kokomo. Brian's pissed he wasn't on Kokomo.
You're upset that they're not ignoring part of their history. You're also kidding yourself if you think they're going to play a 15 song set, and NOT play surf music. Of course they're going to play Surf Music! It's the only Music they ever sold!
So the reason you're depressed, is because you're finally seeing what you thought was, isn't.
Meanwhile, some of us all along have accepted that the band is multi-facetted, and that possibly... MAYBE... there was brilliance and creativity, and greatness in those surf songs, too.
Bravo.

Hey, it's Wednesday. Is the new single out yet??
I think I liked this thread better when it was all about cement shoes and people asking about other peoples' health. Maybe it's time for another of your sonnets then. Yes, please.

Howsabout some of us actually base their comments on having heard the song in question as opposed to who wrote it ? Rumor has it the song in question isn't too shabby. Maybe not another "Midnight...", but not something built by cowboys* either. [* obscure Brit reference - google it ] I looked it up (british reference- cowboys) and there seem to be multiple meanings. Could you elaborate?
