Al might be short *now*, due to age. But Marilyn's shorter, she doesn't look 5'8".

The number doesn't look right to me, either, but I'm just matching body parts.  And it really can't be all THAT tall since the media is always going on about how short Tom Cruise is, and he's 5'7"... which doesn't sound short to ME at all!

Al is shorter than the shortest girl? It must be a joke.

I do have some mild jokes about Al's height, but this isn't one of them.  That's why I explained my method of guessing their heights.  Bheue is 5'2", which is coincidentally the world wide female height average, and NOT coincidentally my height.  The average for American females starts at 5'4" and goes up from there.  I drew Al at his IMDb listed height of 5'5", although some of the people in this thread seem to think that's actually being generous.  Marilyn was drawn about 5'8" (also Bruce's height), though as I explained above, I was really matching her eyebrows to Brian's colarbones and was not regarding the scale.  That's not really THAT unheard of height for a woman.  Diane is drawn two inches taller (5'10", which is also Carl's listed height), and Ginger was drawn an inch shorter (5'7").  I would still love hard data about how tall they are, but my guessing isn't unreasonable, I think.  It means they'll look Carl, Dennis, and Bruce in the eye, which is perfectly fine for a cartoon.

I know I haven't been on the forums for a while.  The reason I haven't been is the exact same reason I haven't hit the point of actually animating yet... real life happened.  Oh, so much to mention!  But you guys don't want to hear me "Wah wah wah!"

So without further ado...

THE LADIES!

Brian and Al are in there purely for size comparison.  That's why they're set at 50%.  The ladies from left to right are (not that you can't tell the Honeys apart, but one never knows): Diane, Marilyn, Ginger, and... Bheue, the space alien who's out to steal the boys' muse because the Greeks didn't make an art muse.

I drew Marilyn first, based on this picture so I could draw her eyebrows even with his colarbone.  That's the best I can do for her height since either the internet is not obsessed with her, or she's protective of information about her.  For Diane and Ginger, I just took Marilyn and sized her up and down respectively, hence the identical brush marks.

THIS served as a guide to size... I kid you not.  Basically, I just guessed from that cover that Diane's a bit taller and Ginger is a bit shorter.  Hooray for guesswork!  Oh, and fun fact: since I drew Marilyn first, I tried making her mouth a bit more neutral like most of the boys, but she absolutely refused to look remotely like the real Marilyn.  So then I drew a smile, and suddenly she's Marilyn!  Which I guess just goes to show that Marilyn's smile is magical.

Yeah, I know Bheue's clothes look really complex next to everyone else.  I Googled Retro sci-fi outfits and that (in silver) was one of results.

It was the link image that caught my attention.  Surprisingly the image was really THAT small in the article.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/7-songs-that-sound-like-theyre-about-women-but-arent/ar-AAbjFM5#page=1

Page 2- "CRACKLIN' ROSIE," BY NEIL DIAMOND (a bottle of wine)
Page 3- "ELENORE," BY THE TURTLES (anti-record label)
Page 4- "SEXY SADIE," BY THE BEATLES (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi... well, that explains the link image)
Page 5- "ANA'S SONG (OPEN FIRE)," BY SILVERCHAIR (Anorexia Nervosa)
Page 6- "DELILAH," BY QUEEN (Freddy Mercury's cat)
Page 7- "SHANNON," BY HENRY GROSS (Carl's dog... I swear I had no idea that was going to be in there!)
Page 8- "HELEN WHEELS," BY PAUL MCCARTNEY AND WINGS (Paul's Land Rover)

When I was in C.A.P. I heard a cadence chant called "Irene".  Only heard it once so I don't remember most of it.  But it had things like Irene standing in the night, slick, slim, and bare... running your hand over her body... turning her over again and again... and the last two lines were, "Irene, Irene, you're really grand.  You're an F-16 in the fighter command."

12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BEACH BOYS’ PARTY! Uncovered and Unplugged on: December 04, 2015, 07:39:51 AM

"But the album became a hit, in large part due to the hit single “Barbara Ann”, which was not even originally slated to be part of the set"

That's a story I don't know yet. Anybody here who can tell me it?

They just mean that the song wasn't planned -- that Dean turned up to the session, they asked him what he wanted to sing, and he suggested that.

Oh yes, that makes sense - it could be that this was what the writer had in mind. I wonder if AGD will ever forgive Dean that he suggested Barbara "F." Ann... Cheesy

I just thought - "Pet Sounds" is great art, and "Party" is great fun. Both of which are The Beach Boys.

Begging your pardon, but there are no "F."'s in my aunt's name.   LOL LOL LOL

Yes, I do have an aunt named Barbara Annette.   I think grammy and grampy had the song in mind when they named her.

What's the story behind the instrumental "Why" on the Made in California compilation?

It sounds like it could be from the Paley sessions, but I can't find anything on it.
It's off the MIU sessions - November 18th, 1977.

An instrumental named "Why" on the very same day I was born?  Oh, gee, thanks BBs...

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_recorded_by_the_Beach_Boys , they also recorded "Bells of Christmas", "Belles of Paris", "Kona Coast", "Match Point of Our Love", "Melekalikimaka", "Pitter Patter", and "Sweet Sunday Kinda Love".  And sometime during that day they even found time to BREATH!

Concerning the Sloop John B sequence.

Yes it was spot on. Freakishly spot on. That fact that it was so spot on is a testament to the detail that went into this film. It was not a typical attempt by a film crew to mimic an old piece of film. Just like the whole opening montage....its a true recreation.

Also, the inclusion, if you think it through made a lot of sense. The film is dark. It's a fun moment between the group when there was a lot of friction. It tells the viewer that even though Mike and Brian did not see eye to eye, there were good times.

To me it felt too stiff.  Dano looks this way and that way only because Brian looked this way and that way.  Brian looked this way and that way because he wanted to.  Dano was recreating a nervous Brian, and for the rest of the movie it's fantastic and I'm lost in the feel... it just doesn't work in the recreation since Brian was relaxed and jovial that day.  Same goes for just about everyone else in the recreation:  They're going through the motions, but they're doing it stiffly, and just because someone else did it fifty years ago.  It's like watching an elementary school play.  They're hitting their marks when they're supposed to just because they're supposed to, and not able to act off of each other.

Thanks Emily, it's certainly a start.  I'm beginning to think you might be able to count Mike Love's fans on the fingers and toes of a triple amputee.

This is because I delved into the Mike Love fan page - which was different than the one I saw a year or so ago - and found the forum.

You will have more luck finding his fans if you go to his Facebook page.  It's the simple case of they flock to where it's updated the most, and his FB page is the most updated of all the BBs (Usually with either photos of his most recent concert, or a TBT).  Every post has replies about how great such and such show was, or ravings about how talented he is.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: November 12, 2015, 07:12:31 AM
I should mention that I did finally get to see Love and Mercy.  I had absolutey no problems with both Dano and Cusack's performance... except for Dano's singing.  He's not remotely the singer that Brian is.

My biggest problem with the movie was the Sloop John B recreation.  I know a lot of people say it was spot on, but to me it felt mechanical.  "Look left now.  Look right now.  Look happy now.  Take a swig from the bottle now.  I said NOW!"  And Davern does not look enough like Carl for the switch between Brian and Carl joke to work.

I haven't seen it again yet, though.  I'm one of those people who need ample time to process emotions, so when I watch movies, it tends to be in block of about 5 minutes.  And the movie was definitely an emotional roller coaster ride.

Probably most of us have seen photos from this shoot, which looks like to be from 1966. Two questions:

1. Where's Al? (obviously it's not the first time Al missed a photo shoot)

2. More interestingly, who is the sixth guy?

Didn't that old Lorren Schwarz Daro wear a hat like that back in the day? Or was it Vosse?

It might just be the light reflecting off of his collar, but the guy with the hat kinda looks like he has a white beard.

Also, some of the outfits in my reference drawing psd came out of these pictures.  The layers are labled "Yellow Day" because they're all wearing yellow.  Although Mike's yellow is approaching cream.

common trait of creative super minds

I feel so uncreative now.

Well, I guess a better way to put it is I'm aware of noises around me, I just ignore them.  My toddler doesn't talk yet so I can't tune out completely.  Y'know the cliché about the lack of noise being the sign of a kid getting into trouble?  Completely true with this kid.

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How infamous was Murry in his own lifetime? on: October 18, 2015, 06:19:19 PM
I might as well throw in another two bits.

Murry's idea of parenting was always skewed, and his letter to Brian (which surely he was drunk when he dictated that load, because there were clearly no filters turned on between his brain and mouth) demonstrates just how badly skewed he was.  It is pretty sad to think that he saw Audree's love for the three kids as proof that she no longer loved him.  Reading between the lines, he was clearly lonely and hungry for love, and his attempt to shake Brian's nerves and get the old Brian back was to try and get Brian's love.  The thought was always doomed to failure because what Murry most wanted in a son was a clone of himself, someone who thought identically to himself.  Someone who would forge success through pure hard work and loneliness.  Someone just as lonely as he was.

But at least the three brothers knew Murry did love them.  That is the small gem that can be taken.  A parent trying to turn a kid into a clone is a far better parent than one whose love is conditional, as Grandpa Wilson's was.  I'm not excusing Murry, though.  He did exactly what a lot of abusive parents wind up doing; he emotionally disarmed his kids, made them incapable of withstanding the world.  Only certain kind of people could have taken Murry's parenting and come out stronger.  Alas, if only Murry had any idea that his attempt to make his kids stronger would have the opposite effect.  But of course if he could fathom that, he wouldn't BE Murry.

This comes courtesy of my husband, who as a child suffered at the hands of his step-father.

Picture link is broken tho.

That's weird, especially since it's the opposite for me: that I can see this image just fine but a lot of the others in this thread show up as broken links for me... although I can tell by people responding to them that they can see the images just fine.

Was looking for pictures of Carl so I could draw his run cycle (btw, either the cameraman loves shots of Carl head on, or just doesn't like Carl's profile... which is exactly the shot I need!) when I noticed this:

I feel whatever Mike is doing is inviting some kind of story to go with it.
