Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Rascals
|
on: May 01, 2016, 10:06:13 PM

Hey everyone Been awhile since I last posted. I was wondering if any of you went to any Rascals Once Upon A Dream concerts in 2013? Does anyone know why they have broken up since they cancelled shows at the end of 2013 and havent played since. If any of you went, did anyone purchase a book sold at the shows called The Rascals Visual Biography by Joe Russo? I am looking to buy one but cant find one anywhere. Any other stuff floating out there among collectors? Cheers everyone. Joey

Hey Alan The Running Bear song was pretty good as a cover version. One of the best that Tom did was You'll Never Walk Alone from his tv show. I am sure that's on youtube. Hate to disappoint but I believe the guitar on She's A Lady was done by Big Jim Sullivan. If he couldnt do a session in the early 60's Little Jimmy Page did it. Sullivan was the guitarist that you saw on Tom's tv show. Mr. Page would have only done sessions for a lot of the big artists back then before he joined the Yardbirds in the summer of 1966. But he did do a Joe Cocker session back after he formed Zep didnt he? Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Tom Jones/Jimmy Page. Your opinions please.

Hey again Tom Jones was the very first person I ever started buying records of starting back in 1969. I loved his tv show back then. Later on I got into more of the hard rock including Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page said in his photo biography that he played on many sessions back then including Tom's sessions. No, he did not play on It's Not Unusual. This came from the man's own mouth and also, Tom's original drummer Chris Slade (now in AC/DC) said he thinks Big Jim Sullivan played on it. I just wish some interviewer would ask Mr. Page exactly which of Tom's songs he did play on as Tom's very early albums really rocked and Mr. Page probably played on several songs before he joined the Yardbirds in 1966. If any of you have the time, I will list some songs that sound like it could be Mr. Page playing on. You can find these on youtube so check out these Tom Jones songs and give me your opinions. Here goes: Worried Man, What's New Pussycat, Little By Little, Wont You Give Him One More Chance, Bama Lama Bama Loo, The Rose, Promise Her Anything, Weeping Annleah. Hope to hear from some of you. Thanks. Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Cover songs better than their original

Hey there Some of my fave cover versions-Ricky Nelson's cover of I'm A Fool way more outshines Dino Desi and Billy's hit of this song. Ricky also gave Petula Clark's I Know A Place a run for the money also. One of my favorite albums of all time is The Tom Jones Fever Zone. Loaded with covers which rival the original hits so check out You Keep Me Hanging On, Hold On I'm Coming, I Was Made To Love Her, and a kick butt version of the Temptations Get Ready. Check em out on youtube. Later. Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: George Harrison Living In The Material World DVD

I have the final show of the tour on dvd. The filmer filmed it off the screen so there were video screens at the shows. Easy for someone in George and Eric's camps to press record and play on a video machine. Plus 4 songs were put out in a George box set that had a bonus dvd in it. I read that George didnt want to play the USA in 1991 because he thought Americans were crazy and probably perferred to play in a place which was more subdued. But not to even mention the Japan tour on the dvd was just all to weird to me. Joe

Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Beach Boys in Roanoke, Virginia June 30, 2015
|
on: July 04, 2015, 11:22:03 PM
|
Hey there I went to the Roanoke show on June 30. I work at the post office right across the street so I walked over and saved on the parking fees. The show was excellent so here is a setlist without capital letters and the times for the 8:00 show so here goes 7:58-films start and the band is onstage right at 8 Set 1-surfin, catch a wave, little honda, do it again, going to the beach, surfin safari, surfer girl, wendy, farmers daughter, good to my baby, why do fools fall in love, when i grow up to be a man, darlin, you're so good to me, be true to your school, ballad of ol betsy, dont worry baby, little deuce coupe, 409, shut down, i get around 8:56 pm. Set 2-9:16pm california dreaming, sloop john b, wouldnt it be nice, then i kissed her, let him run wild, dance dance dance, california girls, their hearts were full of spring, disney girls, god only knows, pisces brothers, good vibrations, all summer long, help me rhonda, do you wanna dance, rock and roll music, barbara ann, surfin usa, kokomo, fun fun fun. Off stage at 10:25 I thought the show was excellent. We had about 1200 there so lots of empty seats even though they reduced the price of tickets to $25 for one day only before the show. First thing Mike said was he so felt like being a smart butt tonight and went into a rant about the Confederate flag which drew loads of cheers. I agreed with him. I am no racist nor was I for the south in the war but the flag is about as racist as Captain Kangaroo but as long as it cures cancer, solves the health insurance crisis and prevents all wars and gets the Dukes Of Hazzard pulled off of tv reruns, then I suppose it is ok to ban it. Mike also said another good thing about social media and said he cant even crack a joke without being crucified for it. During the show a woman held up a book sold in the lobby. Bruce took it and he and Mike signed it onstage. On the last song, several and myself went to the front to jam and Bruce got my tourbook and I got mine signed by Bruce, Mike and 2 of the band. Very cool indeed. After the show, I went to where the bus was and there were all of 4 of us out there. Bruce was very nice, saw us and came right over. He does not look his age. He also signed my setlist that the roadie gave me. I told him that they needed to film one of these shows for a dvd. I also told him that All Summer Long was my favorite song and that they should do the whole song instead of half of it. He shrugged on that and on filming a show. The keyboard player also came over and asked if we needed anything. I asked him to sign my setlist and he said "I dont sign setlists". My thought was "ooooookkkkkaaaaaayyyy". Swell fellow. We saw Mike get on the bus and one of the girls travelling with them said he would come out after he changed clothes and rested up. Mike looks like he has lost a few pounds since 2012. It then started raining so I decided to walk back across the street to where my car was in the work parking lot. I got soaked. But I had a great time and for those of you who have doubts about going to see them, I say dont hesitate, go. A night to remember. Cheers everyone. Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / George Harrison Living In The Material World DVD
|
on: July 04, 2015, 10:58:01 PM
|
Hey everyone Did anyone get a copy of George Harrison's Material World DVD? I thought it was a good video biography of him except for one thing. There was much on there of his 1974 tour where his voice was horrible sounding. In 1991, he did a wonderful tour of Japan with Eric Clapton from which a live album came from. In the DVD, there is not one second of coverage of his Japan tour. Does anyone out there think this is very strange? I think it is considering it was his last tour. It is also strange that in a video compilation put out that there were 4 songs from Japan on it. His son said there hasnt been any videos of the tour because they didnt have anything. That is also very strange since they recorded several shows for the live album. Hard to believe that with the big video screens at the venues that nobody in the organization pressed record and play at the same time for films of it. Hopefully some of you can give thoughts and insights into this. Cheers. Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Chris Squire to miss first Yes tour in 47 years.
|
on: June 23, 2015, 06:15:44 PM

Hey everyone A friend just told me this and it shocked me. Chris Squire who is the only original member of Yes has leukemia and will miss his first tour since 1968. This is a real bummer. Billy Sherwood, a former member will take the bass part. I sure hope Chris makes it but you cant party hard all the time can you without consequences. Be good everyone. Joe

Hey everyone I made a boo boo and posted this in another section. Sorry. Anyway, I saw Weird Al Yankovic tonight. What a pro he is and a great show. I am glad I went. Steely Dan is upcoming in August and they are always excellent. But in 2 weeks the Beach Boys are coming here. We are geared up to rock the joint that night. Hey Mike and Bruce in case you are reading this. I just saw your 2015 Royal Albert Hall setlist. Can you give us the exact same setlist for us here in Roanoke? Weird Al played for exactly 2 hours tonight. You havent been here in Roanoke in ages. Show starts at 8. We dont have anywhere else to go and can stay all night. Hope you can do the same. All Summer Long is my favorite BB song so can you do that and make it the complete version and not the shortened one you did in 2012? Hey Bud Shaver, I just read your post on how you met Brian Wilson. You are a lucky guy. Check your inbox by the way. Keep rocking guys. I will be on June 30 on the 7th row. Joe

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / What's out there from 2012

Hey everyone I enjoyed Rocker's thread of pro shot BB concerts. Really educational for us who are collectors. I saw a thread from several years back of a person's list of audio concerts that are out there. It ended right before the 2012 tour. I was wondering if anyone has a list of what 2012 shows are out there on audio. That was a really fantastic tour that I wish I could have seen. I hope they will release a complete show from the tour on video. The hour long dvd they put out just dont cut the mustard. Keep rocking guys. Joe

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 7Th row center for Roanoke show June 30
|
on: May 14, 2015, 08:04:16 PM
|
Hey It's been awhile. I went to buy my ticket for the Beach Boys show in Roanoke June 30th at the Bergland Center. It used to be called the Roanoke Civic Center Auditorium. I was totally surprised that waiting 5 days after tney went on sale that I got 7th row center. I am really psyched. Since I work at the post office right across the street, I can get off work and just walk to the show. It was weird that I got this close because I bought Weird Al Yankovic tickets the day they went on sale and I am near the back of the hall. I guess Al is a legend now and had a number 1 album last year. But anyway, I am psyched but wish it was a 50th anniversary show I was going to. This is kinda weird but are there any pics of Carl out there on his final tour? I saw one in the Beach Boys In Concert book but wonder if there are other pics online. Cheers everyone. Joe

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Glen Campbell in the Beach Boys.

Hey again I was wondering how long Glen Campbell was a member of the band as their bass player? Also, during this time, did he do any recording sessions as their bass player which could have possibly turned into an album with Glen's picture on the cover as a band member? I guess he left before that could ever have happened but I was just curious. Keep rocking guys. Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Turtles
|
on: March 21, 2015, 10:32:25 PM
|
Hey there Here are a few of my favorite Turtles songs-You Baby, Outside Chance which was Barbata's first session and Chuck Portz's last session with them. Other favorites are Can I Get To Know You Better, Guide For The Married Man, Buzzsaw and Bachelor Mother. I was pleased with Howard Kaylan's book but disappointed that he covered the Turtles whole career in only 60 pages. The movie he did My Dinner With Jimi is a fantastic movie. I hope someday that someone will write a proper book on them. Seems like if one guy can write over a 1000 page on the Byrds, then someone can write the Turtles definitive history. I wish Chuck Portz, Jim Tucker and Al Nichol would write their own book. Al completely disappeared after the broke up but I have seen a couple of recent pictures of him on the net. A great band. Joe

Hey again I think it's fun being on this board so here is something for the fans who go way back. I have been collecting rock stuff for 40 years now. One of my biggest collections is on the DC5. I went crazy over them about 15 years ago and bought everything I could get my hands on as far as memorabilia. I went way overboard and now have 81 full sets of their autographs in my collection. Did anyone here ever see them when they toured from 1964-67 and can provide memories and perhaps wrote down setlists? Their shows werent long and believe it or not, an average show was only about 23 minutes. I believe the last year, they were up to nearly 30 minutes. But if anyone has some memories, share them. Thanks. Joe

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Three Dog Night
|
on: March 20, 2015, 11:13:36 PM

Hey everyone I saw Three Dog Night in Rocky Mount tonight which is in Franklin County, Va. so called moonshine capitol of Va. When you play and sell out a 400 seater, your career will only skyrocket. Great show but Cory and Danny look so old. I have a question since Danny has been linked to Brian Wilson. Maybe some of you have some inside answers. I post this from someone who has read Chuck Negron's book. It kinda boggles my mind how after 20 years, they still dont want him back. I know Chuck did himself in with the drugs but he seems to be straight and has in interviews said they dont have that much time left for a reunion etc. Who has opinions as who is the most full of crap over this? I have only read one interview with Cory where he discusses Chuck and Chuck seems to be all open about it in his interviews. Can we believe everything Chuck has to say? Is Danny to blame or is Cory the biggest obstacle in this? At the show tonight, Cory said they were dedicating all of their shows to keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon who died last week. I just wonder if Chuck were no longer around, would they give him the same courtesy and remember him with affection? Any opinions or facts on any of this anyone? Keep rocking. Joe

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / tourbooks
|
on: March 19, 2015, 10:27:08 PM
|
Hey everyone I am new to this board so here is a topic I am most curious about. I love tourbooks and I get them at each concert I go to that has them and when I start collecting on a group, I try to get all of the tourbooks that were put out on that band. I only have one on the Boys and that was the 2012 reunion book. I was wondering if someone has a list or a website that shows all of the Beach Boys tourbooks from the beginning to now? Also, how many shows did they film from the 2012 tour? I was disappointed that the one that was put out was only an hour long. I wonder if they will release the whole thing? Take it real cool guys. Joe

Hey again Thanks again for welcoming me to the board. You guys seem to be cool. I dont post much on boards but I will post a couple of questions on this board. The most I ever posted was on the Dave Clark 5 message boards as I have quite the collection on them. Dont have much on the Beach Boys but I did get on ebay the 50th anniversary tourbook. Nice book. The concert book that just came out is also fantastic. I envy all of you guys who saw them in 2012 as they bypassed the Roanoke area where I saw them way back in 1978 I think. But anyway, thanks again everyone. Joe
