Now, if only we could bring in Al and David, we could have quality and the real deal. Assuming the boys could act like men.
Thank You, Donald. Carrie - chime in, please. Dbags - put a cork in it. David earned this, people. He's not some schlep in the latest incarnation of the Mike and Bruce traveling medicine show and ice cream social. Kids of the 'Boys - nein, danke.

"Don't Be Scared" has echoes of Pet Sounds with it's beautiful arrangements. Easily equal or superior to anything else the 'Boys were doing at the time. Omit the ill-advised, discofied "Pipeline" and the nauseating "Rock And Roll Survivor", and Going Public is a strong effort. Love it.

For all of you outside the Bay Area unfamiliar with Selvin's work, I can tell you aside of the G.D. (he's a huuuuuge fan) basically everyone else has been liberally skewered in his column.
He's an angry old man from the sixties who can't disappear soon enough for most Chronicle readers, and fans of music in general.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys cult followings

The term "Cult" hardly applies to a (once) mainstream band such as the B.B.'s.
13th Floor Elevators, Love, Chocolate Watchband, Ultimate Spinach and other commercially unsuccessful bands seem to fit that category better, but with the emergence of the internet even they are getting to be mainstream. And that's a good thing. Go Giants !!!.

"Drive In" and songs in that vein definitely have the bearded ones greasy fingerprints all over them. If prepubescent / adolescent lyrics are your forte', he's the man with the goods - to be sure. Certainly no one would pigeonhole him with the myriad of serious collaborators that worked with the group, such as Parks, Kalinich and even Rieley. Verbose and flowery he was not - but I concur with the sentiment that he was effective in the early sixties before the world got serious.
