Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson - 1st soloalbum-rerelease news!

The bland production, lack of edge or punch is a problem for Carl's BB songs for that era, especially when you compare them with live versions. Take KTSA especially and Living with a Heartache . If the studio version of KTSA sounded anything like the TV and live appearances, it's probably a bigger hit. Bruce has stated on a few occasions that he pushed for an edgier KTSA and Carl refused. Would explain why other songs have the same problem because Carl was calling the shots.
That is an interesting about KTSA/Bruce. I agree, the live version is much better. I also think with a few lyrical changes to make it, I don't know, more adult sounding, could have improved it. "Ice Cream Weather"? Cold beer weather, Ice chest weather, anything would be better than ice cream.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The great lost Dennis Wilson 1965 lead vocal. For what song?

Speaking of alt. vocals (and "Sail on Sailor"), did Mr. Desper say he thought that he may have had somewhere (in storage, believe) a copy of Carl singing the lead on S.O.S.?
Or am I misremembering?
Oh, and also: Brian joining Carl for those signature falsetto "I... hear the sound of a" and "When... I look" hooks in the verse of "Good Vibrations" is an example of my favorite couple of moments in all of recorded 'Beach Boy-dom' (surpassed, perhaps, only by the classic "Ahhh......." harmony sung by the whole group later in the same number).
It's been a while since I listened to the performance, but I believe that the two brothers sung it 'live' together like that during the rehearsal prior to the gig (though I cannot recall if they did it during the actual shows) in Hawaii, '67, right?
Finally, does anyone know of any other recorded times where Brian joined Carl for those two key moments of G.V. in a live setting?
I recall him saying this as well, about the Carl lead vocal.

I'm gonna do this similar to the concept of Today. Side one will be Rock N Roll, side two will be more introspective.
1 California Girls 2 Good To My Baby 3 Dance, Dance, Dance 3 Help Me Rhonda 4 Do You Wanna Dance? 5 The Girl From New York City 6 Girl Don't Tell Me
1 Please Let Me Wonder 2 She Knows Me Too Well 3 Let Him Run Wild 4 I'm So Young 5 Summer Means New Love 6 Kiss Me, Baby
That one is perfect.

I played that song for someone who had never heard it, had no knowledge of the band. Her reaction was along the lines of, so they had a whole bunch of people writing the letters? etc. She thought the song was funny, and the idea of people writing in was funny.

I totally agree- It appears Dennis would have preferred the piano heavy version, but this guitar mix- man, with a real lead vocal and the BB's backing...really cool. It almost doesn't need vocals at the end, the way the piano trails off. Maybe it wouldn't have 'saved' the bands progressive fortunes back then, but who knows.

I've seen the movie twice now- (don't know if I've seen a movie twice in the theater since Empire Strikes Back.) I liked it. The attention to detail is outstanding, in a way that only serious BB fans will appreciate. The way Dennis would flip his hair, little things like that. I thought they portrayed Mike very fairly. Some people are just business and goal oriented. If I was him I wouldn't take offense to the film, but I'm not him. They did compress a lot of the history, but like people have said, it's a two hour movie.
Just my two cents:
Favorite Parts: when Mike freaks out about the cello, the '2001' portion at then end- very artistic and well-done. I think I actually preferred Cusack's Wilson. Dano was great, but the movie is showing Brian at such a delicate time in his life, I kind of wished we had seen him earlier, when he was more of a confident, dominant personality as he could be. Dano seemed so fragile the entire time in his portrayal, which I understand was the point the movie was trying to make about the time period.
Least Favorite: I thought it was about 5 minutes too long. I could see where someone who wasn't a super fan would get a little bored. Also, I was seeing it in an old, art-house theater in Austin, but I was underwhelmed by the sound. Not the soundtrack or how they did it, but the music never seemed loud enough, like I was kind of straining to hear what was going on. As far as attendance, there were about twenty people both times, and all were over 60 except for me. For what its worth.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Credits on POB

SO I was reading the POB credits again (for about the 10th times, although it has been several years, and Van Morrison's name popped up as being a friend of Dennis. Forgive the ignorance, but that's THE Van Morrison, right? How cool would that have been if he had sang backup on a song.

I like SDT too, although it took me a while. I with they had put one or two tracks like this on each album- just flat out rockers. Just my two cents, but also would have liked to see that harder live sound in the early '70's appear on the records. Some of their studio recordings are begging for another guitar. Shoot, if I was the manager at the time, I would have had them re-record the entire Wild Honey album with Blondie and Ricky in the band. This might not be realistic, smart, or practical, but I would love to hear it.

I dreamed the other night that I was back watching them make Feel Flows in the studio, and someone was playing the guitar part in the break, but on a keyboard, and I was getting frustrated because I knew it was a guitar. I kept telling them, but no one listened.
