1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tucson Beach Boys Kerfuffle on: September 20, 2014, 03:23:25 PM
Just got back from checking my f*** and Wagnalls dictionary 'cause I'd never heard the word "Kerfuffle" before. Must be an Arizona term.....

Kerfuffle: A commotion or fuss, especially one caused by conflicting views. A social imbroglio or brouhaha. An organizational misunderstanding leading to accusations and defensiveness. A minor disturbance or disagreement. Smaller than a contretemps, larger than a snag, involving more people or things than a SNAFU or a stink. A problem or a altercation. Trouble, hassle or scuffle. Chaos, disturbance, out of wack, screwed up.

Also: A gathering of hipsters. Like a murder of crows or gaggle of geese. Frequently with hipsters of poor hygiene or the appearance of such due to excessive grease application.

Kerfuffle. Your SmileySmiley.net word o' the day.

It's just a word I hear that seemed to fit. Etymology dictionary says it's of Scottish origin, appearing changed from C to K in Canadian English circa 1930.

Rio Nuevo, a troubled and controversial governmental development district, has decided to hire Mike & Bruce. The local Alt-weekly reacted and proved better informed than average.

The way the story is told in the memoir, he bashed a repetitive unrelated simple bit over and over again on a piano to cogitate on the problem and solved it splendidly.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Manson and BB on Fresh Air on: September 18, 2013, 04:20:16 AM
She writes about that in her new memoir....and about buying grape juice and going to the laundromat with Brian....which is why I didn't particulrly believe my ears.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set? on: September 17, 2013, 02:16:47 PM
Buy? No.
Listen to it if received it free? Probably not.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Manson and BB on Fresh Air on: September 17, 2013, 02:06:27 PM
On 17 September the NPR radio show Fresh Air will feature the author of a new biography of Charles Manson. The preview today mentioned that they'd be playing a song by Manson and also the Beach Boys version.

I expect it will be available as a podcast if you don't live where NPR is broadcast.

On today's program was an interview with Linda Ronstadt who mentioned a Wilson. While I expected her to mention Brian my ears said that Linda said "Dennis Wilson" but my ears sometimes mislead me.

I would make the voices in Brian's head benevolent instead of malevolent from the outset.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIC Price Discussion Thread. on: August 30, 2013, 04:07:55 PM
Down to US $117 at Amazon
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WHAT THE HELL?????? on: August 30, 2013, 03:23:42 PM
This could be preposterous, but it's possible that people who want to see Mike Love's Facebook page might also be interested in seeing Mike love....sorry, Mike Love.

If this appeared somewhere else, it would be worthy of total derision.
On his own Facebook page, not so much.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIC Price Discussion Thread. on: August 30, 2013, 01:08:45 PM

11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine says there's a BAD conflict w/Mike over the license. Lawsuit coming? on: August 18, 2013, 11:30:50 AM
How about

Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks Not Appearing as the Beach Boys

or
Do "tribute bands" require licensure from the owners of the name?

Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks Perform a Tribute to the Beach Boys

I know, that tribute band idea is SACRELIGE but it could work.

12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Reviews of The Beach Boys in Concert! book on: August 02, 2013, 05:38:18 PM
A lot of books claim to be the "Ultimate" this or that (probably at the behest of the publishers).

This is one of the few books I've seen that achieves that claim made on its cover.

Big kudos to Ian and John for turning what must have been an immmense amount of research into a fascinating and well written book.

13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Reviews of The Beach Boys in Concert! book on: July 06, 2013, 04:07:36 PM
The book is a real gem.

Among the many things I've learned from the book so far are just how hard working the touring band was. Wow.

Also that they shared several bills with the Jeffeson Airplane BEFORE Monterrey Pop. Made me wonder how the audiences at those shows responded to the mix of styles and IF it was a suggestion of possible negative repsonse at Monterrey Pop or IF it was an indication that crowds could appreciate both.

The collected reviews are also very interesting. Some seem pro forma or pre-determined. Some insightful. Highly variable responses even on the same tour.

Also, Mike's comment to an interviewer that Brian was too paranoid (that's the word he used) to leave home. Possibly the most direct remark on that topic that ever escaped a band member's lips.

Speaking of correcting Badman entries for places that don't exist, I was surprised to see this great new book continue an error that also appears at Bellagio.

There is no such institution as "the State University of Oregon".

This is minor and fairly inconsequential but I'm still surprised that someone living on the west coast of the US would not know that the institution in Corvallis, OR was then and is now named Oregon State University.

I was happy to see that the name of my alma mater and all the venues where I attended concerts were rendered correctly.

15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: We Gor Love - Studio Version on: July 04, 2013, 02:24:03 PM
Looks like it's MIA on MIC but I suppose that's not surprising.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why did the 'Add Some Music To Your Day' single fail and what if it had not? on: April 22, 2013, 03:06:17 PM
I was in high school at the time. There were only 2 people I would even mention the words "Beach Boys" to without receiving instant ridicule. One was a big fan of the BB and the with the other I had a long running argument about who was better the Beatles or the Beach Boys.

It was extremely unusual to hear anything from the BB more recent than Good Vibrations on the radio until Sail On Sailor came out.  I loved everything on Sunflower in those days....but it was a love that dared not speak the name of the band.

18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: at what point did Brian start to seem \ on: February 17, 2013, 01:01:38 PM
Anyone have any idea when he began to hear and then be disturbed by voices in his head?

Often, people w/ auditory hallucinations self medicate w/ street drugs leading to uncertainty about which came first, the hallucinations or the drugs.

Are there any originals under glass at the R&R Hall of Fame in Cleveland?

There should be.

(original shirts, not original band members)

As the man said, it takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anybody seen the new remasters in store? on: November 29, 2012, 03:52:59 PM
Zia Records in Arizona had them ALL and priced at $9.99 (while Amazon had them priced higher).

23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can someone please confirm that this label variation exists??? on: October 13, 2012, 02:03:58 PM
I've looked at 1000s of US BB albums over the years and do not recall seeing one like you describe.

Yep, basketball games involve at least 5 players on each team. He may not be LeBron or Kobe or God Almighty, but he was selected for the team and played in title game.  He's taking home an Olympic Gold Medal.

Congratulations Kevin Love, Olympic Gold Medalist.
