Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tucson Beach Boys Kerfuffle
|

Just got back from checking my f*** and Wagnalls dictionary 'cause I'd never heard the word "Kerfuffle" before. Must be an Arizona term.....
Kerfuffle: A commotion or fuss, especially one caused by conflicting views. A social imbroglio or brouhaha. An organizational misunderstanding leading to accusations and defensiveness. A minor disturbance or disagreement. Smaller than a contretemps, larger than a snag, involving more people or things than a SNAFU or a stink. A problem or a altercation. Trouble, hassle or scuffle. Chaos, disturbance, out of wack, screwed up.
Also: A gathering of hipsters. Like a murder of crows or gaggle of geese. Frequently with hipsters of poor hygiene or the appearance of such due to excessive grease application.
Kerfuffle. Your SmileySmiley.net word o' the day.
It's just a word I hear that seemed to fit. Etymology dictionary says it's of Scottish origin, appearing changed from C to K in Canadian English circa 1930.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Manson and BB on Fresh Air
|

On 17 September the NPR radio show Fresh Air will feature the author of a new biography of Charles Manson. The preview today mentioned that they'd be playing a song by Manson and also the Beach Boys version. I expect it will be available as a podcast if you don't live where NPR is broadcast. web site www.npr.org/programs/fresh-airOn today's program was an interview with Linda Ronstadt who mentioned a Wilson. While I expected her to mention Brian my ears said that Linda said "Dennis Wilson" but my ears sometimes mislead me.

This could be preposterous, but it's possible that people who want to see Mike Love's Facebook page might also be interested in seeing Mike love....sorry, Mike Love.
If this appeared somewhere else, it would be worthy of total derision. On his own Facebook page, not so much.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Reviews of The Beach Boys in Concert! book

The book is a real gem.
Among the many things I've learned from the book so far are just how hard working the touring band was. Wow.
Also that they shared several bills with the Jeffeson Airplane BEFORE Monterrey Pop. Made me wonder how the audiences at those shows responded to the mix of styles and IF it was a suggestion of possible negative repsonse at Monterrey Pop or IF it was an indication that crowds could appreciate both.
The collected reviews are also very interesting. Some seem pro forma or pre-determined. Some insightful. Highly variable responses even on the same tour.
Also, Mike's comment to an interviewer that Brian was too paranoid (that's the word he used) to leave home. Possibly the most direct remark on that topic that ever escaped a band member's lips.

Speaking of correcting Badman entries for places that don't exist, I was surprised to see this great new book continue an error that also appears at Bellagio.
There is no such institution as "the State University of Oregon".
This is minor and fairly inconsequential but I'm still surprised that someone living on the west coast of the US would not know that the institution in Corvallis, OR was then and is now named Oregon State University.
I was happy to see that the name of my alma mater and all the venues where I attended concerts were rendered correctly.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why did the 'Add Some Music To Your Day' single fail and what if it had not?

I was in high school at the time. There were only 2 people I would even mention the words "Beach Boys" to without receiving instant ridicule. One was a big fan of the BB and the with the other I had a long running argument about who was better the Beatles or the Beach Boys.
It was extremely unusual to hear anything from the BB more recent than Good Vibrations on the radio until Sail On Sailor came out. I loved everything on Sunflower in those days....but it was a love that dared not speak the name of the band.

Yep, basketball games involve at least 5 players on each team. He may not be LeBron or Kobe or God Almighty, but he was selected for the team and played in title game. He's taking home an Olympic Gold Medal.
