2  Smiley Smile Stuff / DVDs and Videos / Re: Beach Boys: Back to the Beach on: July 14, 2006, 03:37:14 PM
I reviewed this DVD back in October 2005 on Amazon.com.  This is what I wrote:

This DVD is features 5.1 and 2.0 Audio. Picture quality and sound quality is great. The only other great thing about this is that it is less than 23 minutes in length. The photos on the box feature Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine. The Beach Boys performing on the show, a 1994 concert from Saint Louis, MO, are Carl, Al, Mike and Bruce Johnston. The drummer? Oh, that's pretty boy John Stamos living out his fantasy of being a rock stor. You see 4 songs performed by the Beach Boys: California Girls, Catch a Wave, their classic hit, Under the Boardwalk and Be True to Your School.
They certainly make it seem that Jan & Dean appear with the Beach Boys, but this is not true. Jan and Dean perform from pool side, lip-syncing to Surf City and SideWalk Surfing. No band, no Beach Boys, but some decent footage of surfing and skate boarding and pretty girls.
I can really find nothing of value with this product. It's not worth the postage to mail it to you, the gas money to drive to the store to pick it up, or the shoe leather to walk to the DVD store.
It is a trememdous disspointment. Not even the more arden Beach Boy fan will want to admit he purchased this.

According to Capital, it will be released on August 29, 2006.  Amazon.com is taking orders on it already.  It is a limited edition release.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Carol Kaye thread... on: July 14, 2006, 02:02:29 AM
I have corresponded with Carol many times over the past three years or so.  I have always found her to be very courteous and very helpful.  She has sent me hundreds of pages of articles she has written.  I have encouraged her numerous times to write a book about her career.  She says she's working on it.
I'm just a nobody -- I have no idea if all this material is true or not.  Let's face it -- she must be close to 80 now.  I'm over 20 years younger and I don't remember all the details of the 60s any more, so how can we expect her to remember everything?  Brian called her "the best damn bass player in the business."  That's good enough for me.
But it wasn't until after viewing Pet Stories on the Brian Wison DVD Pet Sounds Live In London, that I really began to understand what she was talking about.  What the recording sessions were really like and how different it was working for Brian.

Mark,

I have the DVD-Audio of Brian Wilson Live At The Roxy.  My DVD player can play it and gives me great 5.1 sound.  There is a DVD-Audio available right now of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys.

The CD/DVD release on 8/29 according to the press release  Pet Sounds And Good Vibrations 40th Anniversary: Press Release From Capitol says the DVD contains some documentaries, some promo materials and this:
 * DVD also contains Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Hi-Res 96 kHz/24-bit PCM Stereo audio mixes of Pet Sounds + Hi-Res 96 kHz/24-bit PCM Mono audio mix of bonus track “Hang On To Your Ego”

Is there a good reason to purchase the DVD-Audio of Pet Sounds?  I definitely plan to purchase the CD/DVD release.  Am I purchasing virtually the same audio on both DVDs?  Yesterday, I purchased and watched Brian Wilson Pet Sounds Live in London.  It was great sound-wise.  You could get a little dizzy with all the camera shots switching by so quickly.

What do you advise?

Aloha & mahalo, Joe   Afro   Cool
