1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unexpected Beach Boys Songs In Unexpected Places on: February 23, 2008, 09:29:19 PM
I have the Beach Boys set as one of my alerts on Sirius, and I've been surprised by the variety: Heroes and Villains, All This is That, Add Some Music, This Whole World, Honkin Down the Highway ...

I gotta say, Devoted to You, minus the overdubs, is quite gorgeous.

I'm thrilled to see some Tom Waits mentioned here.

I'd add Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and Eels' "Electro-Shock Blues" to that list.

EDIT: Whoops, I see these are already listed. This is a second, then! Great minds think alike Smiley

Lots of good stuff on this list ... Lucinda Williams, Kathleen Edwards, Tom Waits, Solomon Burke.

Definitely no Brian Wilson ... but perhaps a Brian Wilson for the 00s!
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: NEIL YOUNG - LIVING WITH WAR on: June 23, 2006, 10:31:42 PM
Neil Young has no business getting political with America. I certainly will not be buying this album. Why doesn't he criticize the Canadian government?

EDIT - I'm not a Bush fan.

I haven't read the rest of the replies, so pardon me if I'm repeating. Neil's lived in the U.S. for longer than I, personally have been alive, and his kids are American citizens. He has a hell of a stake in America's fate, so I have no problem if he "gets political." More power to 'im.
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / E (Mark Oliver Everett) and Eels on: June 23, 2006, 10:29:30 PM
I am the only crazy person who has noticed similarities between E (Mark Oliver Everett) and his project, Eels and the Brian Wilson of the 60s? He's a relentless experimenter, very prolific, a master of multiple styles ... and half nuts!

I think the only listeners who can enjoy Brian's (and to some extent, Dennis') late 70's vocals are people who are familiar with AND SENSITIVE TO his problems. Others who don't know or simply don't care will be turned off.

Perhaps ... knowing what was going on in Brian's life at the time encouraged me to give Love You more than a cursory listen, and it then began to grow on me.

That's how I've looked at it, like it's a different person singing. I actually really like his voice on "That Same Song." But it's still kind of painful to put his 70s output next to Pet Sounds and think ... that's the same guy!

I'm going to tell myself that the XM DJ's schtick is to look clueless and that he really knew who Brian was all along. I hope.
