1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWPS - The Final Verdict on: February 12, 2010, 12:05:34 PM
I remember when I got BWPS, I was in college.  I skipped class to go to Best Buy to get the CD.  I came right home and sat on my bed with headphone and listened.  I was big into the SMiLE sessions and knew what I wanted to hear.  But when I heard all of the created "links" that I assume Brian and Darian and maybe VDP put together....some of the magic went out.  Those little snippets just seemed to far fetched to me to see part of what I wanted Smile to be.

When Brian said he created a whole "new third movement" I knew there had to be some creating....but like the start of the 3rd movement seems so out of place with the feeling of the songs.  Now I doubt anybody who listened to it without hearing the original sessions could tell what music is newly created.  But as a die hard fan, it seemed odd to me.

But to me it's Smile in the best form we can get it.  We probably are never going to get a box set or anything close.  So BWPS works for me.

The moment during that sequence of the movie that I'll always love is when Dewey Cox simply says "Mike, you're flatting."

I about died laughing that it was included, and assumed it was done on purpose.  Of course, the rest of the people seeing it with me thought I was nuts.

I was at the Sunday show.  Actually  my first Beach Boys concert in any incarnation (I'm only 24, so there haven't been a great deal of chances here in Nebraska)

But I thought a few things stood out, and I'll mostly agree with c-man:

1.  I brought down the median age to about.......70.  I think there were many of the older set there simply because it was on the symphony season ticket list.  They really dug the first set full of car songs, but got amazingly quiet during the second set full of "deeper cuts."  Of course, just when I was getting excited to hear "Here Today" with a symphony.

2.  AMAZING to hear Bruce sing Disney Girls live.  I did not expect that at all. He sounded great.   And real props to Bruce for being so seemingly happy to be there.  He honored Carl after he sang GOK.  It took Mike at least 6 songs to smile and talk to the audience.  Once Mike warmed up, he was actually extremely personable to the crowd.  He really knows how to work a room.  He got quiet again during Brian's "ego music" cause he couldn't be front and center dancing and waving at the few women approximately his age.

3.  The program called "Endless Summer" a "Mike Love concept album."  Nice to see Mr. Love writing the band's biography.  LOL

4.  The symphony idea was really cool.  Except for their opening medley, where they butchered the opening of California Girls.  As Murray would have said, they gotta "syncopate it!"  They most certainly did not.

It was a fun experience for such a die-hard Brian fan as myself.  I never thought I'd say it, but I'd probably go see Mike and Bruce if they came near again.

Went to see Walk Hard last night, and I'll have to admit...watching Dewey Cox's "LSD Period" when he records the VDP song is awfully familiar to Beach Boy fans.  In fact, pretty sure one of his band mates tells him to not mess with the formula.  Great stuff.
5  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / VDP song on "Walk Hard" soundtrack on: December 08, 2007, 11:39:21 AM
Just downloaded the soundtrack for the upcoming John C. Reilly film "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" which opens later this month in the US.  It's a mock biopic about a Johnny Cash type musician as he progresses through the times.

Of course he enters the late 60's and goes through an acid rock phase.  Van Dyke Parks co-wrote Cox's foray into the world of psychedelic rock.  The song is called "Black Sheep" and is definitely Van Dyke Parks and has just a little feel of a song that BW would write.  I urge VDP fans and Beach Boy fans to check the song and the movie out!
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / KGB- Sail on Sailor on: August 25, 2006, 11:23:32 AM
Semi Beach Boy related...

I was doing a little research on my favorite song "Sail on Sailor" and I came across the fact the song was recorded by this semi-super group "KGB."  Of course, i'm completely and totally interested in finding out what the deal is with it.

Who's heard it?  Is it any good?  Differences from the BB's track?  Most importantly, where can I find it?  hah.

Many thanks in advance.
