Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Anyone going to a Tom Waits concert this summer?

I hope he does some solo piano stuff on this tour. This will be my first Tom Waits concert. My youngest was too young for me to leave in 2006. Now that the kids are a little older, mom can venture out a little bit! The last tour was in support of Orphans. He hasn't released anything new so not sure how that will affect the setlist. Guess we'll know soon!

I would have to agree with Luther. Though we should point out that the last 30 years takes us back to 1978 so the Beach Boys were pretty much done by then anyway. Tom is unique because he has been able to continue creating quality stuff consistently for the last 35 plus years. I do enjoy his sense of humor too. The "press conference" was hilarious and a creative way to announce his tour.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis' drumming
|

I've been watching Billy's Dennis documentary on Flasher. (surprised no one has been discussing it here.) Anyway--one of the people he interviewed said that Dennis began playing left handed once he returned to drumming after he injured his hand. I had never paid attention to how he drummed (right vs left) but is that true? Not knowing much about drumming, is that a hard change to make? Also--what is everyone's impression of Billy's documentary? I'm hoping there will be more stories as it goes on. Right now it is very thin on detail, big on generalities of Dennis' personality.

I don't know that much. Just that Carl and Billy Hinshe (I think) sang backing vocals on Desperados Under the Eaves and I think Carl arranged the background vocals/harmonies. I'm hoping someone here knows how that association came about. I guess Billy would know. I've seen him post on one of the boards in the past but can't remember which one.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Carl as lead guitarist

This is a two part question. 1. Who did the guitar solo in the live version of Let the Wind Blow from In Concert? 2. What kind of guitarist was Carl? It seems he let a lot of the leads go to others in later years. Clearly he was an awesome vocalist but as far as skill on the guitar goes, how was he? (I'm not a guitar player obviously!)

Thanks Jon! The two seem too much alike to actually be friends, but I would have loved to have seen the interactions between them. There was a concert posted on YouTube (Blondie singing Wild Honey) from the early 70's that had notes saying Keith Moon sat in with them on a song. Do you know anything about that?

I've posted this at the Blue Bamboo Room too but there's not much traffic there so I'm hoping some of you might know. Jon Stebbins mentioned Dennis partying with Keith Moon in his book. Were they friends? I know Keith Moon was a fan of the Beach Boys but I'd like to know more about their relationship. Anybody know?
