1  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What was #1 on the day you were born on: November 13, 2008, 10:36:27 AM
I haven't been around in a while but saw this and had to respond. Don't know if anyone will see it but check this out:
On my birthday the number one song in the US was : "Good Vibrations"

2  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Anyone going to a Tom Waits concert this summer? on: May 25, 2008, 10:48:20 AM
I hope he does some solo piano stuff on this tour. This will be my first Tom Waits concert. My youngest was too young for me to leave in 2006. Now that the kids are a little older, mom can venture out a little bit!
The last tour was in support of Orphans. He hasn't released anything new so not sure how that will affect the setlist. Guess we'll know soon!

I love Rickie Lee Jones too but I've never listened to Chuck E. Weiss.
Wasn't Dennis Wilson friends with Rickie Lee? I seem to remember reading something about them--maybe in Jon's book. Maybe they lived in the same area. (guess I'm vearing off topic)

I would have to agree with Luther. Though we should point out that the last 30 years takes us back to 1978 so the Beach Boys were pretty much done by then anyway. Tom is unique because he has been able to continue creating quality stuff consistently for the last 35 plus years. I do enjoy his sense of humor too. The "press conference" was hilarious and a creative way to announce his tour.

I don't know about the size of the other venues but the Fox in Atlanta holds under 5,000. I think about 4,500. Should be a nice size. My seats are fairly close--Row J in the orchestra but over to the right.
Glad to know there are other Waits fans here. Wonder what Brian Wilson would think of him? (I'm guessing it wouldn't go over too well with him.)

Don't know any other combo Beach Boys/Waits fans but if I'm not the only one, any of you going to the concerts in June/July? I'll be going to the show in Atlanta!
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis' drumming on: November 07, 2007, 01:38:44 PM
I've been watching Billy's Dennis documentary on Flasher. (surprised no one has been discussing it here.) Anyway--one of the people he interviewed said that Dennis began playing left handed once he returned to drumming after he injured his hand. I had never paid attention to how he drummed (right vs left) but is that true? Not knowing much about drumming, is that a hard change to make?
Also--what is everyone's impression of Billy's documentary? I'm hoping there will be more stories as it goes on. Right now it is very thin on detail, big on generalities of Dennis' personality.

Thanks Carrie! I think it goes without saying that anyone reading this board will likely be buying the book!  Roll Eyes
Did David introduce Warren to Carl also?
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl and Warren Zevon on: May 15, 2007, 04:52:50 AM
I don't know that much. Just that Carl and Billy Hinshe (I think) sang backing vocals on Desperados Under the Eaves and I  think Carl arranged the background vocals/harmonies. I'm hoping someone here knows how that association came about. I guess Billy would know. I've seen him post on one of the boards in the past but can't remember which one.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Carl and Warren Zevon on: May 14, 2007, 09:52:41 AM
What was their connection or was there one?  How did Carl get to know Warren Zevon? Were they friends or did Warren just ask Carl to sing for him because he wanted that  Beach Boys sound for Desperados Under the Eaves?  Huh
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: May 08, 2007, 08:36:47 AM
Is it me or is the version of Fun, Fun, Fun on the Endless Summer broadcast just dragging?!? Why did they play it so slow?  Huh
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Carl as lead guitarist on: April 16, 2007, 05:07:08 AM
This is a two part question. 1. Who did the guitar solo in the live version of Let the Wind Blow from In Concert?
2. What kind of guitarist was Carl? It seems he let a lot of the leads go to others in later years.  Clearly he was an awesome vocalist but as far as skill on the guitar goes, how was he? (I'm not a guitar player obviously!)
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Jon Stebbins Thread on: April 16, 2007, 04:59:48 AM
Jon--
I'm looking forward to your new book about David Marks! We've asked this before but now that you have another Beach Boy's book under your belt, any chance of a book about Carl? There's so much we don't know about him!

Jasper--
Regarding your Wild Honey video on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkKqL0fTsu8)---do you have footage of the song that Keith Moon sat in on? I'd love to see that!
 Shocked
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis and Keith Moon on: October 11, 2006, 06:41:27 PM
Thanks Jon! The two seem too much alike to actually be friends, but I would have loved to have seen the interactions between them.
There was a concert posted on YouTube  (Blondie singing Wild Honey) from the early 70's that had notes saying Keith Moon sat in with them on a song. Do you know anything about that?
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis and Keith Moon on: October 11, 2006, 10:23:40 AM
I've posted this at the Blue Bamboo Room too but there's not much traffic there so I'm hoping some of you might know. Jon Stebbins mentioned Dennis partying with Keith Moon in his book. Were they friends? I know Keith Moon was a fan of the Beach Boys but I'd like to know more about their relationship. Anybody know?

New video from "It's OK" special is up. Does anyone have more from this show they can post?

 Huh
I've been hoping someone would post this. One question... It says the video/interview is 7:01 but it keeps stopping at  3:21. Is that really where it should be stopping?
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: May 30, 2006, 09:57:54 AM
I've always wondered which came first, the end of Carl's marriage and then the drugs and weight gain or the drugs and weight first with the marriage ending after. Anybody know?
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: May 09, 2006, 10:20:48 AM
Yep, they played "Keepin' The Summer Alive" and the "Good Vibrations"/"Goin' On" medley. I'll upload them, probably next weekend...

Thanks Jasper! Can't wait!

Question for Jasper--
Did the Beach Boys play any other songs on the show you got "Goin On" from? If so, what? Any chance of posting it/them? I've really enjoyed all of your videos! Thanks for sharing them!
