Mike's album might get picked up if he somehow is able to release it under the name "Beach Boys". Why not? He tours under the name, wouldn't be much of a stretch. Or better, a possible release on the internet, via Beachboyscentral.com.
The license to use the BB name is for touring only. That's why not. I know that, but consider what if Brian had the legal rights to use the name "Beach Boys" as his rider, and then tried to play "Love & Mercy"? There would be a lawsuit in that. Whitney Houston could still have a career if she cleaned herself up. The Who are releasing a new album (+ ep) this year, which will draw a lot of attention. AC/DC will always draw crowds due to their energetic performances. But what differentiates these artists from Al Jardine and Mike Love is that they contain the "original talents" as opposed the the sidemen who make up the band. If Roger Daltrey toured as The Who by himself, the concerts would not draw as much attention. If AC/DC toured with out the Young brothers, I don't think they would be as exciting.

I contacted Mike Love, and he was really warm and forthcoming, and has invited everyone over to his for afternoon tea, and to discuss and listen to his private SMiLE tapes. He says he's got the proper sequenced version which he made in 1987 (with help from John Stamos).
John Stamos would have suggested that they record a video of them performing it live, with Stamos wandering around stage with his Telecaster acting like he doesn't know what he's doing. If you've ever seen a concert with Stamos, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Maybe Al's problem is the same with Mike's: No record company wants an album from a bunch of has-beens. Brian Wilson should be in the same category, but it is "Brian Wilson", so he mas a little more merit.
Al's California concept album looks like it may be very fun to hear. I hope the direction he takes with it will be similar to how the "original" version of Big Sur was recorded. Folkie with soothing harmonies. None of that PT Cruiser stuff.

I can't find this article on the Iceberg website. You didn't make it up, did you?
Love and merci, Dan Lega
If it was made up, then it would be the best "made up" Beach Boys story since Gcplayer from the "old" Shut Down board posted this story: This is a story from the Associated Press that was released Sunday, November 27, 2005:
Early Saturday morning, Beach Boys founder and main producer, composer, and arranger Brian Wilson walked out of his New York City hotel to find former bandmate Mike Love waiting for him. Love sued Wilson earlier this year for "shamelessly misappropriating...Love's songs, likeness, and the Beach Boys trademark, as well as the 'Smile' album itself." According to the hotel's doorman, Love appeared to be intoxicated and began screaming obscenities at Wilson, calling him among other things a "liar" and a "cattle rustler". Wilson tried to walk back into the hotel and end the confrontation, but Love followed him, spun him around and slapped him like a little girl. Wilson calmly told the doorman to call authorites and Love ran away, screaming behind him "I'm Mike Love!! I can bench four hundred pounds!!" Authorities throughout the states of New York and Pennsylvania are trying to apprehend Mike Love. If you sight him, please notify your local police department.

An autobiography from Al? Seems like it would be pretty straight (not have as much controversy like Brian's). However, Al seems to have lived a pretty uneventful life, despite being in the Beach Boys.
possible excerpt:
And then I said to Brian, "Hey we should record that song Sloop John b." Brian seemed slightly interested, and when I showed him that instead of playing a C Major chord during the line "I wanna go home", we should drop the chord down to a B/Amaj7 and then to an Amaj7. That way the song would have more of a jazz feel to it. Brian was impressed, and went home that night and arranged the song to how we know it to be today. Despite my name not appearing with Brian's as the song's arranger, I still felt very happy with the final version of the song. When I told Mike how I felt about my name not appearing on the song and that I wanted to sue, he told me to wait until after twenty years because 'it would be funnier that way'."
I'll buy it anyway.

Being British, i've never even heard of Full House, was it any good? or just a pile of cheese like some of the trash that gets put on in the small hours here: ie: Everybody loves Raymond, Hope and Faith?
Full House was my favorite show when I was a kid. It was primarily "family oriented", with some kind of moral or lesson at the end. The show had a sort of "Three Men and a Baby" type premise, except it was three men trying to raise three girls. John Stamos' role in this was the part of Unlce Jesse, the rebel rocker who moves in with the family to help raise the girls. Enter in the cheese. Now that I am older, I can only stand about a minute of it. It's very cheesy, with bad acting and a lot of corny jokes. The only good thing to come out of it was the career of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (each played the same role, since it is easier to cast twin babies to play one role) who have made a fortune starring in b-movies geared towards preteen girls. They have since grown up and are focusing much of their attention on fashion. You might be able to download a few episodes off of file-sharing networks, but I wouldn't spend your hard earned cash on the DVD's unless you just have to have the episode with the Beach Boys on it.

John Stamos sang the Full House theme song? Or did I misinterpret that?
Despite how easy it sometimes can be to dislike John Stamos, I have to give him props. Being the big Beach Boys fan that he is, he got to do the one thing that all of us want to do: play with the Beach Boys. Not only that, he also recorded with them, appeared in their music videos, and toured with them (and sometimes still does). He also was given a lead vocal, to sing the remake of "Forever", which suggests that he is a true Beach Boys fan, selecting a song from Sunflower. Sure the remake was definately a slice of processed cheese, but so was everything else recorded by the Beach Boys at the time period.
His presence in the Beach Boys touring band also added a spark to the slowly, dulling BB's concert scene. At least Mike Love could say during the concerts, "We got John Stamos from Full House on drums tonight!". Unknowingly, some people, including me when I was younger, would have thought that Stamos was there from the beginning.
Now that Carl is gone, Al is out, and Brian is doing his own thing, the Beach Boys need something to keep the concerts alive. Apart from the musc, which should be the main draw, I think if Stamos came back to tour with the BB's, they would see a bigger concert draw (this is in case that a "reunion" never happens).
Now as far as the Full House episode with the concert, that was definately my first intro to the Beach Boys, and later lured me into the fan that I am now.
By the way, does Brian get royalties from the Beach Boys concerts, even if he is not performing witht them?

A short clip can also be seen on the Endless Harmony special. I believe they were singing "Surfin'". I remember watching Endless Harmony and thinking that the quality of that segment seemed of poorer quality than other footage from that era. Perhaps the tape was taken from a personal collection???
BTW, as far as anything new being released. I am always up for concerts. The recent Hallmark cd was a great add to my collection, and I would love to see more "complete" concerts and videos from any year, whether it be the 60's or 90's. Footage from Beachago would be nice, even though as I understand some of it was lost.

Dennis messing around in the studio in '67? That doesn't seem to have much interest to me. Especially since "Be Still" and "Little Bird" weren't great productions.
I personally would like to see Beachago tour concerts, even if the encores are missing.

I've been corrected on the Richie playing sax on Kokomo. But think I remember seeing his name on the credits of the Hallmark album. Oh well, I guess I'm wrong.
But the Philly show, it's worth watching at least once, but I reminds me of why people don't take the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys seriously. Don't get me wrong, I would see them in concert, in any lineup, anytime, but it is hard for me to tell someone about the Beach Boys when this type of image is portrayed in their minds. Unfortunately, the Beach Boys, they way they are going, could be an attraction in Branson, Missouri (you know, what Las Vegas would look like if Ned Flanders ran it).

I would agree that he is tired of Smile related questions.
But also, due to his psuedo celebrity status, he may just be tired of all fan base related questions. The email message seems like an automated email response that responds back with a sort of "fill in the name blank" type message. On the other hand, he might just be an enigmatic fellow!
By the way, did anyone watch "Broken Trail" last night on AMC? The credits list Van Dyke Parks and someone else for writing the score to the movie. Sometimes I wonder if Van Dyke is more talented than Brian in some ways, especially when you look at Van Dyke's list of recordings/collaborations.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The vocal handoff
|
on: June 27, 2006, 10:18:16 AM

Speaking of vocal handoff's, can anyone post a list of "falsetto" duties that were held in the Beach Boys' concert career?
As far as I know, the order of falsetto goes like this:
Brian 1961-65 Bruce / Al 1965-? Blondie 1972- Al - 1975 ish-?
(someone had to have sang the part in between this era and Jeff Foskett)
Jeff Foskett 1983- early 90's? Matt Jardine 1985-90's? Adrian Baker ??-2004 Randell Kirsh 2004-present
Can someone fill in the blanks?

I believe Richie Cannata played the sax solo on Kokomo. Listen to the new Hallmark CD or any concert recording/taping of the Boys post 1988. Richie always plays the sax.
Now that Richie no longer tours with the Beach Boys, the sax solo does not get played. Instead it is replaced by a keyboard solo. There is a concert video tape of the Beach Boys playing in Philly around '95 or so. Mike plays sax on shut down with Bruce cramming a mic down the bell of the sax. He then made sure the crowd noticed that he was playing the sax solo by arching back and acting like he was giving it all he had. The whole concert is ridiculous, with Stamos, cheerleaders, Mike in a hideous American Flag vest, Carl acting like he can't here through the moniters, Al with his pony-tail, and to top it off, Billy Hinche does the Wipeout rap all "pimped" out.
The only thing that saves this concert is Matt Jardine's take on Don't Worry Baby and Carl's ripping version of Wouldn't It Be Nice.
