Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bacharach & Wilson

Brian just told the interviewer some pretty groundbreaking news, and he just goes back to asking about the legal issues with Mike Love... (those pictures show Bush not reacting when hearing the news about 9/11)
Often when I read interviews I get the feeling that the person conducting it has preconceptions of how it will turn out, and just goes with it. It's so rare that an interviewer is interested in actually seeing where the conversation might go. More often than not, they want an answer to their prewritten question so they can move on to the next.

What the f*** is this interviewer thinking about?? A: Things are going pretty fast. I'm writing all these songs, and I hope to do some recording this year. Lately I've been writing with Burt Bacharach. We're going to do some recording.
Q: You've had some legal issues with Mike Love. Have they been resolved?

My own mix from the 66-67 sessions. I tinkered with it obsessively. Yeah, I know some of the these songs probably wouldn't have made the final cut.
1. Look 2. You're Welcome 3. Do You Like Worms 4. Cabinessence 5. I Wanna Be Around/Workshop 6. Vegetables 7. I Love To Say Dada 8. Spanish Guitar Instrumental 9. Heroes And Viilains Suite (with false Barnyard) 10. Wonderful 11. Mama Mama Mama 12. Barnyard 13. Old Master Painter 14. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow 15. Water Chant (from Sunflower) 16. Good Vibrations 17. Wind Chimes 18. Holidays 19. With Me Tonight (from the Hawthorne CD) 20. Child Is Father Of The Man 21. Our Prayer 22. Surf's Up 23. Hidden Track using the "boys and girls and boys and girls" snippet from Carl's Coda on the Hawthorne CD)
Gee, it's great to talk about SMiLE again...
That's a great running order!

As far as I know, the version with backing vocals and animal sound effects available on bootlegs is from an acetate. Is this also the case with "Do You Like Worms?"? I mean, even the officially released version has pitch problems... but is that maybe because of the tape?
The mash-up is very good, by the way.

I'll just cross my fingers that he'll like it if he hears it... I've been getting some questions about added material in this mix, just wanted to say that every piece of sound is from the 66-67 sessions. By the way, is this the Spector smiley? ----> EDIT: Actually, one piece of snoring is from the a capella version of I Went To Sleep, and the Surf's Up coda is from the '71 version.

I like the baseball song from the Adult Child bootleg.
On the LDC album my favourites are the title track and Car Crazy Cutie. That album has some pretty extreme moments, I always have to smile at Brian's falsetto on No-Go Showboat...

I can't believe how harsh you're being on this book. To me it was a wildly entertaining read, and although I wasn't aware of the bogus aspects of it back then, I think the most fascinating parts could only come from Brian himself:
Growing up/problems with girls The "take a sh*t on this newspaper" incident The Rovell sisters The episode with Mike & Marilyn Listening to Pet Sounds for the first time Pinching that actress in the ass and stealing scoops of peanut butter with his thumb
I remember the parts with Landy sounding somewhat like propaganda, as some of you have mentioned. However, I don't think that hurts the book all that much. Landy did save his life, and the intense treatment was a large part of Brian's life. He brainwashed Brian and controlled his life, so to read that part more or less written by the guy makes sense in a weird way.
I haven't read it in a long time, but that's what I feel right now anyway. The book may not give you the facts or the truth, but it has plenty of good stories, and I think it is essential for every Brian Wilson fan.

Thanks for your answers... I'm glad to be aboard now after being a lurker on this forum for some time. You guys sure know your BB trivia! When I said completed, I did mean the Wild Honey version, which in my ears sounds perfectly complete. I much prefer it to the Sunflower version as the production on that album is a little too slick for my taste. I also like the simplistic lyrics on the first version and I don't think the lyrics on Sunflower were necessary. As of march '67, Brian hadn't really given up on Smile. I'm pretty sure he had the whole production to Cool, Cool Water envisioned in his head after he had written it. That's why I wanted to know your opinion on how the song relates to Smile. I mean, by march Smile was already a giant mess and a lot of stuff wouldn't have fitted into what more conservative Smile purists consider to be "the real album" (or the original vision of Smile) ...well, by that I mean that a lot of the music Brian was making at the time was merely musical exercice and not as focused as the 1966 sessions. I am currently putting together a very snippet-based mix of Smile, and originally Cool, Cool Water was on the playlist. It doesn't sound out of place at all, as a lot of the parts are similar in a way. However, I'm beginning to have doubts about it and wanted your expertise.

It takes the water chant from In Blue Hawaii,
Isn't this only on the Sunflower version? If anyone knows exactly when the Wild Honey version was recorded (and maybe under what circumstances), i'd like to know... Also, why didn't it end up on a grab-bag like 20/20, seeing as it was completed? Do you think it is completely inappropriate on a Smile mix?

I remember reading that Brian wrote this in march 1967, but that it wasn't recorded until the Wild Honey sessions. There seems to be some controversy to this song among Smile fanatics. On one hand it sounds a lot like Love to say Da Da and in his book Dominic Priore always regards the song as a piece of the Smile puzzle. The song celebrates the joy of a clean, fresh glass of cool water in a manner which I think is in line with the Smile concept. On the other hand, a lot of fans seem to hate when people use the song in their Smile mix. Any thoughts on this?
