There's no autotune on WIBNTLA. You're just reveling in saying you're disappointed and looking for things to moan about.

Go f*** yourself you pissy little bitch.

I don't give a bollock what some internet c*** thinks.

Didn't you just get banned for saying that a week ago?

I did. I'm searching for the word that will lead to a permanent banning though. What's worse than c*** on the schoolyard profanity league table?

This place is ludicrous. I'm just taking things to their logical extreme.

1/ I make a joke about flushing someone's head down the toilet

2/ Receive ridiculous 'if this were real life I'd kick your ass' threat from 'Mikie'

3/ Call Mikie a c***

4/ Get banned

5/ Pissy little bitch Disney Girl has a go

6/ Call Disney Girl a c***

7/ Get banned.

I mean...ffs. There's no respect for anyone elses opinion round here, no debate, just a bunch of fucking Gnomes knee deep in sh*t arguing over which one's tallest.  f*** it.

As someone who is highly attuned (no pun inteneded) to pitch correction, I have to say I can't hear it on WIBNTLA. Whereabouts in the track are you hearing it?

Every long note almost. I wish I couldn't hear it, but I can, and it's hugely, hugely disappointing. I can just about ignore it now I've had a week to get used to it, but it rankles for sure.

Who ever sZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZD

Anyway- if no one else can hear it, I'm happy for you, and honestly don't care whether I'm written off as a troll or not. I've run it past a few fellow engineer types, who share my suspicions...

I wonder whether playing this onto a too hot domestic reel to reel with a wobble issue and a hissy left channel might restore some mystique. Hmmm

You either had too many pints or too few.

I think I would have needed at least twice as many to not have immediately noticed the rubbish mix and auto tune.

Was definitely at prime number of pints to have zero tolerance for Mikie and his passive agressive bullshit. Jesus what a c***. I hope he's nicer in real life.

*awaits ban hammer*

If I was a more vindictive man, I'd find the c**t who mixed this, and flush his sorry head down the toilet.

You're really something else, aren't ya?  I'd hate to cross paths with you if you were any more vindictive.  We'd find out really quick who's head would end up in the toilet.  Hint hint: It wouldn't be mine.  Grin

I don't give a triple toed flying f*** what some pitiful little messageboard c*** thinks about me. Go f*** yourself

Glad to see this idiot has revealed himself for the short-tempered troll buffoon he is...

So I got back from the pub, after a glorious eight or so pints, put on the unreleased D/W gem we've all been waiting to hear, and find

a/ The BVs have been buried. If I didn't know better, I'd have guessed the person who mixed this had never heard the Beach Boys before. All the focus is on the lead vocal, to the expense of everything else, and that's just not how a BB production is meant to work. Where the vocals play off each other at the start of the fade....you should be able to HEAR what's going on, like the end of Surfs Up, or Til I die, Leaving this Town.

b/ The long held notes? Auto Tune. And if someone is being smart and denying the use of 'Auto Tune' itself, then fine, but there are other products of different names which have exactly the same affect. It's obvious on Sherry She Needs me- why would there be any doubt that it'd be used across the board.

Sure, unless you're in the studio looking at the plugin chain, you can't say for sure, but I know my way around pro tools, and that sure sounds like AT to me. Maybe they think they've done something smart like tuning the reverb returns rather than the actual lead or something, but it's still noticable. They've made one of the most beautiful vocal tones ever sound like a robot.

As to my general manners in the face of such disappointment. 'Mikie' -

"You're really something else, aren't ya?  I'd hate to cross paths with you if you were any more vindictive.  We'd find out really quick who's head would end up in the toilet.  Hint hint: It wouldn't be mine.  Grin"

Forgive me for not caring that 'someone on the internet' thinks they could 'have me'.

For me saying I'd contemplate flushing Mark Linetts head down the toilet is a vaguely amusing (to me) way of expressing my disappointment at the awful job he's done on this box set. No apologies you brought the beef you despicable old git.

Auto tune, digital reverb, crazy panning on sail plane song? sh*t mastering? We've had final confirmation that the Beach Boys should leave box sets to the Bootleggers.

And Disney Boy:

As if I care what some fucking c*** on the fucking internet thinks of me. Why don't you fucking f*** yourself, you fucking c***.

Good enough for a permanent ban, do we think? I'm done with this nest of fucking pricks Wink

^Hey, I like that. You've got your Denny suite and Brian suite. Still missing Feet, but I admit it would stick out on that tracklist.

Whenever I see the word 'suite' in connection with The Beach Boys, I want to vomit. They were a pop group. Let's not try and attach 'importance' to three songs by the same guy by calling it a 'sutie', ffs.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WIBNTLA Reviews on: August 23, 2013, 05:19:21 PM
Has the rough mix 'people in the know' have heard got the autotune and classic rock lead guitar on it?
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: POB AS A BEACH BOYS ALBUM! on: August 22, 2013, 02:11:33 PM
POB instead of Love You?
Yes, Please!

It's funny, because they are two of my favourite albums, by anyone, but I kinda know what you mean.

Wasn't Love You meant to be a Brian solo album at first anyway, but ended up being BB? Crazy...POB was the basis for a QUALITY Beach Boys album, whereas Love You , much as I love it, sounds like a crazy solo project
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: POB AS A BEACH BOYS ALBUM! on: August 22, 2013, 01:42:10 AM
Put some BW gems like Good Timin or California Feeling in there and you have a masterpiece.

Gotta disagree… he track list needs to stay as-is. Those tunes belong together. GT and CF have a very different vibe.

CaliFeeling especially, IMHO, needs fresh lyrics. Don't care much for them at all. The "Taste a grapefruit…" line, especially, destroys it for me.

I could take 'Good Timin' on there...especially in light of the Dennis sung live version. California Feeling I just don't care for. You're right about the lyrics, and it just doesn't have any 'spark' to me- most Brian material up to a point you can TELL was written by him. CF, Back Home, couple of others...just sound workmanlike.

12  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: August 21, 2013, 01:53:28 PM
I found a version of I've Got A Friend. This recording has probably the best sound quality of all the versions I've heard. I've said it before and I'll say it again, to me it sounds like parts of this song became Holy Man. Listen from 2:56 and on until the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBCZhEr3_no

wow! That really is an improvement in quality...surely that's of a good enough quality that it could be restored and used for a release?

Anyone know the source?
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Secrets of Producing Like Brian Wilson on: August 21, 2013, 01:51:12 PM
I 'produce' and that's the main thing I've taken from Brian- no cymbals. So much easier to get a GREAT snare sound, using the room mics etc, if you don't have to worry about cymbals.

Funnily enough the aforementioned Troggs are another huge production influence. Love stuff like 'from home'- cave man drums, single note fuzztone guitar, bass. killer sound
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Should the Beach Boys have just broken up for good? If so, when? on: August 21, 2013, 01:18:26 PM

So, if we're to speculate on the when the Beach Boys shoulda coulda woulda thrown in the towel, it would have to be Carl's Death in February, 1998.

Yeah...I suppose. Then at least we get wipeout with the fat boys and all those other awesome records they made in the eighties.
Had Dennis lived, and the band went on, you don't think they would have still gone that road? Dennis revolted during MIU, but was back in line by L.A. (Light Album), then basically out of the picture for KTSA. I don't think Dennis would have had much clout to change what eventually went down.

I dunno- but in my fantasy they split up in '74, and Dennis left in '71/2... I don't think it was his job to prevent them from being sh*t anyway. He was just the only one capable of writing a GREAT song after 76 or so

the 2 inferiorities

can I steal this for a band name?
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Should the Beach Boys have just broken up for good? If so, when? on: August 21, 2013, 12:45:25 PM
My ideal scenario-

Dennis's hissy fit over the sequencing of Surfs Up results in him leaving the band and completing a first solo album with Daryl Dragon in '72 (wibntla, igaf, cu, mig...already a killer tracklisting) and having a successful solo career. Removed from the insanity of the Beach Boys, he still has his ups and downs, but cleans up in the early eighties, and after a few huge albums, turns to soundtrack work in about 1990

Rest of The Beach Boys carry on (C and the P and Holland still happen, minus Dennis's contributions), but split up post Holland.

Mike: Studies law and becomes a high powered music biz lawyer
Brian: Makes big ones, love you, adult child as solo albums.
Carl: produces, makes the odd solo record
Bruce: Teams up with Dean Torrence and tours the oldies circuit forever.
Al: raises horses.

They get back together for live aid in '85, but Mike insists on it being a one off as he's got his image as a lawyer to protect. Everyone else agrees, and they all live happily ever after.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Look Back with 'Wendy' - another MIC teaser! on: August 20, 2013, 10:11:22 AM
Hehe, I noticed that too. Sound quality isn't the best. I wonder why?

These won't be taken from master tapes, liekly dub discs pressed for playing elsewhere. Similar releases, such as the Kinks at the BBC, have a similar quality.

Taped off the radio when rebroadcast (most likely from a transcription disc) in 1966. Then subjected to all kinds of digital clean uppery.

I think it sounds pretty good, considering! The vocals sound oddly similar to the studio version in places
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 'Where is she?' just played on BBC radio 2! on: August 20, 2013, 08:02:08 AM
is this a Murry song?

Good to hear it, but I can see why it wasn't finished- bits of the melody are just too close to she's leaving home
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 'Where is she?' just played on BBC radio 2! on: August 20, 2013, 06:57:10 AM
Hope so, Radio 2 was playing downstairs and I missed it!

I switched over to BBC6 because I couldn't stand listening to Vanessa bloody Feltz reading out letters from people who think fracking is a good thing.

Mike couldn't do Mick, and Mick couldn't do Mike.

And therein lies the source of Mike's frustration. Theirs was a love that could never be.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIC Absentees on: August 18, 2013, 07:02:47 AM

In what way is it a stupid idea for a thread? You've no interest in what songs were or were not picked for the line-up of (presumably) your favourite group's career retrospective? Ok, fair enough, each to their own. But I do, hence the thread.

I was just being a dick, sorry...but if there IS a point I was trying to make, it's that some of us (i presume I'm not the only one) just have a total blindness to the previously released stuff. Love them ALL in the context of the original albums, but I just don't see the point in the career retrospective side of this

Sorry,  I can't think of a polite way to say 'this is a stupid idea for a thread'

25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: RECORD COLLECTOR: Beach Boys Special on: August 18, 2013, 06:24:43 AM
The new issue of Record Collector is a Beach Boys special. Great and very accurate little essay by the editor and an interesting interview with the band (plus a cool Stack O' Tracks photo shoot cover).

Two quotes from Mike:

''Brian told me on the 50th anniversary tour that he was doing LSD when he wrote California Girls''. (Wow, really? He'd never heard that before? I'm sure there's lost aborigine tribes in Outer Mongolia who know Brian was on LSD when he wrote that song...)

''Dennis was like the Wagner of the Beach Boys. He was up there on a whole other level''.

That last quote was from Al. They mistakenly attributed it to Mike in one highlighted area, but if you check the article itself, it's Al.
