Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Gimme Five: Song where the Beach Boys Sucked

When you get them on headphones the covers on 15BO really grow on you. In The Still of The Night though has always been one of my favorites on that album though, they're classic songs in of themselves so you can't say that they aren't good songs in general. And the production is cool once you start to pay attention to it, the mixing is really the only thing bringing them down.
Also, TM Song is really more of a skit than anything else. It's just not really supposed to be a serious song, it's just a blow off that you're supposed to chuckle at. It's not like this was Mike's self serious side long epic track extolling the virtues of TM, it's just a gag.
I think that because it has `produced by BW` on the label many people give 15BO too easy a ride. In the Still of the Night, for example, has an atrocious lead vocal from Dennis, dire harmonies and poor musicianship. If the group had taken this to Candix or Capitol or whoever in the early 60s they would never have been given a record deal. I agree that TM Song isn`t a very serious attempt at music making. But personally I would rather hear Mike (or anyone) actually trying to write a good song rather than listening to Brian intentionally recording bilge. These songs and the 15BO album should never have been released and Brian shouldn`t have been allowed to produce solo as he wasn`t up to it. The same goes for GIOMH 25+ years later. I'm not going pretend that 15BO is a masterpiece, your take on the album is completely fair, and honestly more objective and critical than anything I would write in its' defense. I used to positively despise 15BO, so I understand where you're coming from. It's easily the weakest release of theirs from between All Summer Long and Love You, so I think your appraisal of it is perfectly level headed. Saying that though, I'd say give it a few more spins. It wasn't until someone made a thread about it here that I started to take a closer look. I don't believe that it's a bad album because the band itself had gotten bad. I see a lot of good ideas in there, and some really endearing tracks stymied by a lack of participation and cooperation from everyone involved. This video is also what partially converted me, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFeMd3HRtTgUs Beach Boys fans are a really eclectic bunch, and it's nice that the music offers enough so that we can all find something to really enjoy. I completely forgot that video existed! Love that clip ... but absolutely hate 15 BO.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The Beach Boys on sitcoms

Having grown up in the 80's, for me the Beach Boys were brought into my life by Uncle Jesse and the gang from Full House. I know this means I am looked down on by the hardcore fans. I am wondering if there are any other appearances the Beach Boys made on sitcoms. Here is what I have seen. Full House 1. Beach Boys Bingo (a classic!) 2. A marathon type ep. with only Mike Love 3. Forever ep. with Mike and Bruce Home Improvement Carl, Mike, Al, Bruce, and Matt.. This cameo was hilarious. You Again? This one is amazing. Crappy show but awesome appearance by our boys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY49qsNMlp0Am I missing any others? THANKS!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child is criminally underrated

When I originally posted this I included an MP3 of a live performance of Problem Child from Philadelphia 1990. I found ANOTHER live performance of the song from New Jersey of the same year. As soon as I get the album I will post it here, just not as an MP3.
This is the best Problem Child Appreciation Thread on the Internet!

John Stamos did a lot in the early 90's to get the Beach Boys out in the public ... hate him all you want but he got a lot of people interested in the Beach Boys again or for the first time.
No, he didn't - a program he was in did. Major difference. I hear that some of his antics at recent C50 gigs have put a LOT of backs up among the band and caused questions to be asked as to exactly why he's there at all. He was portrayed as a BB fan in two programs he was in (80's and 90's). Maybe he had something to do with it. He's not necessary on stage, but did not bother me when I saw him. Seems to have a great sense of humor, as his guide to cuddling attests. I saw them last year (Mike, Bruce, Christian, Stamos) and there were no soccer moms ... it was a young crowd having a lot of fun. Stamos was there and him and Mike were going through their schtick but it was all very fun. Not everything has to be a musical orgasm cause Brian Wilson wrote their music. It was WAY more fun than I was expecting with only 1 original BB on stage. Say what you will ... the man is a diehard BB fan who is living all our dreams. I can't hate on that ...

Could someone help me out in finding this album? I would really, really appeciate it.
THANKS!
I recently listed it on eBay and got no bids. I checked eBay and only found the record version ... don't know what the heck I could do with that. I found it online, though. Yep ... pretty lousy so far.

At 8 years of age, watching the episode of Full House starring the Beach Boys is what introduced me to them and made me a lifelong fan.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Getcha Back is such a tease!

When I heard Brian Wilson's falsetto on Getcha Back I assumed it was back for good. What exactly happened? I have never seen any footage of Brian performing this song? Was this nothing more than 80's studio magic? Has ANYONE seen this song live with Brian singing? I have an MP3 of the Boys doing the song live in 1985 and it sounds amazing but it doesn't sound like Brian. Is that ... Carl doing the chorus? LINK REMOVED BY MODERATOR: WHILE WE CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THE COURTESY, RULES ARE RULES. To the mods ... I ask that you please not delete the link. It is a live song not on ANY album we can buy.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Need info for the Campfire Sessions TV show
|

All the campfire and studio stuff was filmed in May, 1989 at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Al of the concert footage was from May 1989 at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, Ca. This was from the second show of the Beach Boys/Chicago Tour that summer. Brian played a three song solo set in the middle of the Boys set, doing Love and Mercy, In My Car and Country Feelin's. Unlike the Brian of today, he was absolutley embarrasingly bad at that show. All Landyized dance moves and shouting into the mic. The Boys left the stage entirely when Brian came out to perform. When Brian's three song set was done, he left the stage and was not seen again that night.
Wow, thanks for the info!
