Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: Wouldn't It Be Nice?: My Own Story

I predicted itd happen now and yall took the bait to prove my point.
So your posts were "bait" and not a genuine attempt to have a discussion? Ugh. If thats the only thing you took from everything Ive said in this and my other 134 posts, yeah sure. Whatever makes me seem worse. Attack the nonbeliever. If youll recall, I wasnt even the one who brought up Melinda and just because I was expecting backlash doesn't mean it was necessarily my intent to cause it. But again I dont think either of you are really operating on good faith right now or interested in a meeting of the minds so much as playing to the crowds so Im sure any idiom or unflattering phrase I use here is going to be presented in the worst light possible. Spot on. That didn’t take long. 👍👍😂😂

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So... why wasn't SMiLE released in 1967? Not trolling.

Didn’t Alan Boyd and Mark Linett say the tape splicing technology in 1967 wasn’t enough to finish SMiLE?
I seem to remember this too. Guitarfool, GREAT post. I never knew he was close to giving the song away…to whom was he going to give it to? I can't cite where either one said that, but I'm sure I remember they did especially during the Smile Sessions box time. I know I said it more than a few times through the years, chalking up the lack of available technology in 1966-67 to the project not being completed, and in a few cases I got a STRONG pushback to that opinion. I still think lack of technology at that time was a factor, for time restrictions alone if not the frustration of not being able to easily and quickly "audition" the sequences of various segments, and I'll stand by that notion. There are examples of "test edits" that may or may not have been released (I don't know) where Brian was trying to audition different transitions and segments and a few sound like he was doing a very primitive way of editing existing acetates together doing needle-drops on tape. It's been many years so I cannot cite the exact titles but that's what it sounded like to me. To do the kind of editing which is taken for granted in modern studios using digital technology in 1967 would have taken a much longer time and more effort, surely more than it did when they compiled the Smile Sessions box set using DAW's and almost instant crossfades available on any recording tool. So yeah, I'm sure one of those guys mentioned it, and I know I definitely did (if I can dig up any old threads, it goes back to the Smile Shop days.) Thanks Rab! The one name I've heard mentioned was Danny Hutton, who David Anderle was managing at the time, but there was a point where Brian was frustrated with Good Vibrations enough to tell people he was going to give it to another artist to record instead, he couldn't get what he was looking for with the recordings of the song he had done up to a point. People around him talked him out of it, and he came to his senses and held onto the song. I can't give a date in 1966 as to when this was in the process, but it has been reported at least several times if I recall, one may be in the Preiss book? Maybe it was Anderle or Hutton who mentioned it too? If I find it I'll post it. Brian also at one time wanted to sell GV to Warner Brothers for a r&b group to record. Wilson Pickett’s name was thrown around by the group at that time.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: David Leaf to reissue California Myth

Add David Leaf to the EH board shitlist…. Mmm...not really. At least, not yet. There appears to be fallout because David has decided to bypass a visit to our fine feathered friends there after seeing how things played out with Howie. But the BBCGRS* reading is only at 4.4 at this point, as opposed to the Loma Prieta level they achieved with Howie. (The "big one," of course, occurred here, which permanently created the BB chat group version of the San Andreas Fault...) Oh, and BTW...that thread over there called "Over at Smiley" where AGD had posted a clandestine lament about the events that had transpired with Howie... has been disappeared from the board. Having had a sneaking hunch that this might happen, I made a point of copying that entry over into a Word file just in case. Here is the text: "Exactly. I've been a "hard" fan since summer 1975 and though I never thought it would happen, the events of the last few weeks/months have just sucked all the joy out of it for me. I'm close to done with this band, at least to the extent I have been. I posted my thoughts on the latest release here at the time. As for Howie, he's been doing his job, and very well: he's all over the 'net and while he's not been single-handedly responsible for the reboot hitting the Top 30, that's got to have been a factor. But, some elected to focus on individual sentences instead of the overall message, and we lost what could have been a huge asset to this forum. So he didn't post much: 396 people who've registered with this board since it began haven't posted at all. That's almost exactly half. How many posts anyone makes is a meaningless metric (look at my posting total for proof of that). I need to work out how, or if, I can make all this fun for myself again and right now, with the added joy of there being new members who seem to have come here with the express intent of stirring it, I'm not seeing it. Some will see this as a good thing, and they could well be right. Time to regroup and reconsider. Back in my 30s I had a tshirt that said "I'm too old to have to put up with all this sh*t". If only I'd known..."These are clearly the scattered, despairing laments of someone who knows that some real political damage occurred in that thread. And if I hadn't seen AGD relentlessly and remorselessly go after Lorren Daro's jugular here some years back, I'd probably be able to muster some sympathy for him, since he certainly wasn't close to being the main instigator of that firestorm. And we will continue to admire and use Bellagio10452 with the hope that all of this fallout will not cause it to disappear in a fashion similar to the post above. This isn't meant as gloating--this is all sad stuff. In the meantime, I urge those who don't want to wait for the US release of David's book to purchase it from Amazon UK in whatever format they feel they can afford. While the price for the UK print edition is certainly not cheap, I can tell you that it's worth every penny/shilling/pound/dollar and more. --- *BBCGRS = "Beach Boy Chat Group Richter Scale"As usual you are wrong. Your hunch is full of crap. The over at smiley thread has not nor never was deleted. It was moved. Moved to forum feedback. In all its glory. Save space on your computer and delete that word file. Not needed. You can find andrew’s post there anytime you wanna look. And for someone who likes to say you hate the eh board you sure seem to spend a lot of time going there. Witty you are not.

Or would you rather talk about music? It doesn't seem that way, but I hope that's why people visit these places. Throwing tantrums on 6 year old grudges and outbursts must be more appealing?
if that really is how you feel great. but you really should remove that latin phrase under your avatar post. goes against what you are preaching.

Just listened to the set. I like it for easy listening or background music while doing other things. I think for the average listener they will like it. I believe that is who this new edition is aimed at. Most won’t know about old mixes or even care. If this new edition turns more people onto the beach boys catalog so much the better. If this was the goal then i think mark, alan and howie hit it out of the park. Sometimes fans can over analyze something to death. The set sounds good. If one doesn’t like a mix replace it with one you do. But for the average person this set sounds good. Hope it turns more people on to the beach boys and they start exploring the catalog. That is the ultimate goal anyways. Thank you mark, alan and howie. I love the new sounds of summer. I appreciate the effort you all put into this set.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why are the Beach Boys charting so high at the moment?

Plus on amazon’s digital chart the little duece coupe lp is at #51.
And amazon is now out of stock of the version of pet sounds that has been charting the past few days. That has caused pet sounds to fall over a 100 places in amazon’s chart.
I expect nothing less from Capital records Capital records has nothing to do about this. Amazon had the inventory. Amazon sold out. Even they didn’t know there would be a bigger demand for that lp. They have reordered more from Capital.
