Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why Are BB's Fans So Cranky?

Why are we so cranky? Because fans are cranky. Fandom isn't about love, it's about obsession -- hate gets exaggerated as much as love. You'll never find someone who hates Star Wars as much as a Star Wars fan, you'll never find someone as vicious about a bit of Beach Boys stuff as a Beach Boys fan.
Cheers, Jon Blum
Boy, being both a BB and SW fanatic, this one hit close to home. It's like you put a mirror in front of me for the first time and I saw how gangly my teeth are. For the record, though, I've got to voice my support for the "inferiority complex" answer, at least for myself. I feel like I have to defend my profound devotion to a band who is mostly known for a few throwaway surf tunes from the early '60s.

I'm happy for them but I'd also be lying if I didn't say that I'm disappointed. I wanted a #1. I actually came to expect a #2. I didn't see #3. Fug you, Country-man Jackson. I hate you and your stupid cowboy hats and your songs about women with black eyes but strong wills. (Note: I've never seen Alan Jackson, nor heard his songs, but I'm fairly confident my description is accurate).
I'm also not that impressed by #3. Why? (a) Because this album was promoted pretty damn well, (b) their target demographic consists of people who still actually pay for music, and (c) it was a big deal because they hadn't made an album in a very long time, (d) it had the whole "this is a comeback that we're making against all odds!" Rocky-style thing going for it, and (e) because this was obviously something Brian was heavily involved in, and considering he's currently riding a pretty high crest with the hip crowd, that should have given them at least a few more sales with groups outside of their target demographic.
#3's great, but I definite expected 2 and wanted 1.

I would have Mike Love contribute his musical talents, as opposed to his commonly lauded lyrical talents, for this next one: Charlie Parker's 1946 recording of "Lover Man." Parker was out in California and having a hard time scoring the heroin he needed, so to compensate, he drank his head off. Depressed and alone, he drank a quart of whiskey before heading to the studio one night. During the session, he was so drunk the producer literally propped him up to the mic. What followed is widely considered brilliant and among the best music Parker ever recorded, not because of its technique--it's sloppy, horribly sloppy--but because it's raw and undeniably emotive. That's a bunch of bosh, though! Mike Love knows that positivity sells. Mike is a bit of a sax man himself, so I'd like to think he would have cheered Bird up a bit with some of his own sunny riffs, maybe throw in a few riffs from "Kokomo" or "Surfin' USA" during the solo. Yes, Mike Love really could have helped that depressing, unlistenable piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNJpes0XFGU

Heh, beat me to it hypehat! That's the song I just pounded out at the piano. It's essentially this.
"Isn't It Time"
Verse: A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
Pre-chorus: E /
Chorus: A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
Transition: D6sus4/G / D6/A
Verse: A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
Chorus: A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
A / F#m / A / F#m / D/B / E / D/B / E /
Bridge: Bm / E / A A/G# F#m F#m/E
Bm / E / D6sus4/G / D6/A / A/B / A /E /
Chorus: A / F#m / D/B / E / x4 (FADE OUT)
Note: I used a piano to transcribe this, so some of these chords may be difficult on other instruments (I'm looking at you, guitar). As far as the "D6sus4" chord, it's misleadingly and unnecessarily complicated sound. It's really just the first inversion (I think) of G major. So I played a G-octave on the left hand, and a D-G-B on the right hand. The D6/A is just an A-octave bass and D-F#-B with the right hand. For the "A/B" I found a B-octave bass and first inversion of A sounded decent.

Here's what their facebook said:
"You are invited to a free Beach Boys reunion concert event in Central Park live on Good Morning America! The concert is on Friday June 15, 2012- Please arrive at Rumsey Playfield/SummerStage via the 72nd street entrance on Fifth Avenue at 6:00am when the park opens to the public. GMA will be live from 7-9 am. No tickets needed. For more information visit gmaconcerts.com."
so you gotta get there at 6. ughhh
Which means if you live in the middle of Long Island (ahem...), you've gotta be up at 4 AM, so you can get to the train at 4:45...

The new album has dropped way back to #14 on iTunes. Maybe because Amazon is kicking their ass on the price (only $4.99) I'm certain that's what it is. Amazon gets you the same songs, at the same speed--that is, instantly--for half the price. Why wouldn't someone who wants to download the album do so through Amazon?

::REWATCHING THE ROLLING STONE VIDEOS TO WASH THE TASTE OF THAT PERFORMANCE OUT::
LMAO I kid you not, as soon as the performance ended, I opened up my laptop and watched both the "In My Room" and "Surfer Girl" RS vids from earlier. Hilarious. What was NOT funny was how bad that was. I was morbidly curious if you guys were as shocked and disappointed as I was. Seems you all are.

I think Al truly hates Mike Love. TRULY. He's just smart enough to deal with it for the better good.
Yeah, so Al must've been completely shocked when Mike went out of his way to mention that the No. 1 song, "Help Me, Rhonda" featured a lead vocal from Al Jardine. But, it wouldn't explain why Al continues to mention that he wishes the tour would continue on after these scheduled dates. That must be his way of dealing with it for the better good. Yeah, but Mike did make a little jab, saying that they couldn't take "Rhonda" out because Al sang lead, implying that they have to leave it in there, if not because of its popularity, at least to stroke Al's ego.

Could've given them the cover over that joke Charlie Sheen.
Ditto. I understand the world doesn't revolve around the Beach Boys, but come on...the Boys have a much more successful tour going on than Charlie's "Torpedo of Truth" was.

Apart from the terrific "Baby Blue", side two of "LA Album" is pretty awful!
you don't worship Shortenin' Bread? blasphemy! I don't mind "Shortenin' Bread" actually, but it's a terrible album closer (I'd appreciate it more as a b-side, bonus cut or box set rarity). i've never heard shortenin bread before by the beach boys at leas the album version of it :/ i wish they had it on youtube but they dont! Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygBT4nMw-ZgListen before it gets removed. A couple of other videos this guy was nice enough to upload have been taken down. Still, he has almost every song from "Adult Child."

@Cabinessenceking
"Coldplay songs are about nothing. they hardly have songs about a topic even."
What topics did Beethoven or Vivaldi bring up in their music?
Music is about emotion (good or bad)....for me Coldplay's music gives me a good emotional response...even if the song Yellow is about nothing - it sounds beautiful. Music is about making people happy - who says to get to this point the artist has the write lyrics about a specific ideal or place?
Vivaldi's most recognised piece of music is 'the four seasons'... Yellow is by all means musically a very good song. But the directionless lyrics and C.Martin's unflattering voice strips it of beauty for me. I like lots of other cuts from Parachutes though! Have you listened to Viva La Vida all the way through? Personally I found it to be quite a beautiful album. I agree. I listened to that album a bunch of times and was impressed. I really dug it.
