Dae Lims strikes again!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1kTbEL7TV0

This is fantastic!  This is the first "Live" AI I've heard and I totally would believe it!
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2017 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds - The Final Performances) on: May 17, 2017, 04:19:45 PM
if brian and his band's performing this show today will he forget?

to mention today is the 51st anniversary date of the original LP's release

My wife and I attended the Tulsa, OK show and was very surprised there was no mention of the Pet Sounds' release anniversary.  We saw Brian and the band last year down in Dallas TX.  The biggest difference between now and then was last year Brian was still attempting to sing his Pet Sounds album still and was as usual hit and miss but this year it felt like a heavy burden for him to perform this album and gave more lead vocals to Matt and Alan on several songs.  Brian seemed much more interested in doing the songs outside the PS album I will say.  It was great to hear more lead vocals from Alan as his voice still sounds great plus I never got the opportunity to see him when he toured his own band years ago.  I love seeing Brian in the flesh but as far as performing, it just didn't seem like his heart is in it anymore or maybe he was just having an "off" night.  I loved hearing "Feel Flows" as I've never heard it live before and also "Let Him Run Wild" which Matt did a great job on.  Overall, I loved the show, the band was great as always and if Brian still really wants to tour then at least they're doing the right thing and giving the band more and more lead vocals and Brian is still with us.

Pretty harsh article. Seems like this person had already made up their mind before reading the book.

http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1296-the-people-vs-mike-love/

I agree that the writer of this article sounds like they had an axe to grind with Mike on just about everything.  I am about 75% of the way through his book and so far I don't share ANY of the same opinions of this writer.  The book is filled with interesting details I've never heard before from a 1st person account from one who has been there since before the founding of the band which is more credible than the opinions of people who get their info from hearsay.  I now have a greater appreciation of Mike's point of view on things.  This is a fantastic read so far, looking forward to Brian's book soon!

A few thoughts on the audio version, which I recently acquired:

The delivery of his reading isn't all that great overall, he often sounds unsure about what he's reading, he stumbles quite a bit in parts like he doesn't know the material, and that voice - it's like he's thinking, "Yeah, listen to my sexy, mellifluous voice!"
There are points in the book where he is mostly just quoting from other sources - I found some of that a little annoying.
Some of his memories about events through the band's history are pretty interesting, feel less apocryphal and more genuine, and I appreciate that aspect a lot.

and just a warning:  do not fall asleep while listening to this.  Seriously, falling asleep while listening to this is....just a bad idea, don't do it!  (more than that I cannot say)

I also purchased the audio edition and am about 3/4 through the book.  You can really hear the emotion in his voice as he reads certain parts which gives the book an authenticity and whole new dimension to the story.  I definitely see Mike's point of view in a whole new light with all the details he and other sources provides here.  I hope Brian's book will be read by himself as well but I doubt we'll get that lucky!

My wife and I saw this movie yesterday at matinee time at the only theatre I could find listed in Oklahoma City (an hour drive from where I live).  We both loved it! It was mostly an older crowd 50's & 60's but the auditorium was about 70% full.  Great movie for the fans and those who like musical bio's but with all the Summer blockbusters out, I can't imagine this doing that great in comparison-I hope I'm wrong though!  If you haven't seen this yet, you are missing out!  I plan to see it again in the theatre if it opens closer to where I live.  The only thing I was surprised about was the small screen time the Beach Boys as a band performing got but it didn't take away from the movie at all.

My only Beach Boys related gift was getting to see Brian Wilson live in Tulsa a few weeks ago.  It was a great show especially as our seats were just in front of him close to the stage!  I wish they had sold some merchandise but the memory will stick with me.

I also grew up in the 80's as a Beach Boys fan (1st concert 1983).  You would think growing up in Sacramento, CA everybody would be a fan but no one I knew were into them as I was.  I know a lot of people on this board despise Kokomo when it came out in 1988 but somehow I felt vindicated that this "oldies" band that I love so much was top of the charts once more and EVERYONE knew it!

My three favorites since I was a kid are:
The Beach Boys
The Beatles
Elvis Presley
Since I was a teenager in the 1980's, I REALLY got into the hair bands of that era and my favorites where I bought everything were:
Quiet Riot
Stryper
Twisted Sister
Kiss
Dokken

I know I'm in the minority but I loved Imagination the moment I heard it and was extremely excited when I heard Joe was on board for the reunion.  I'm so happy my hopes were not misplaced!  Great album.  Great job.

Guess I'm in the minority too then because it's my favorite BW solo album of all(mostly) original music for the time it came out(BWPS doesn't count!).  I think he did just as good a job on this one!  I remember all the hardore fans totally dissing Imagination back in 98 and I couldn't believe we(I'm also a hardcore fan!) were listening to the same album!

At least the links here allowed me to download the clip whereas on the Rollingstone website I couldn't.  Thank you!

Anyone have any ideas on how to download this?  If I knew some of these performances would end up on a DVD I can purchase later that would be ideal but these are usually only up for so long before they're replaced with other videos and I'd like to be able to have my own copy!
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How would Brian sound now if he hadn't ruined his voice? on: June 06, 2012, 10:15:52 AM
I think on the "Imagination" album, his voice was the sweetest I'd ever heard up to that point and especially the verses of "Keep an Eye on Summer" his voice sounded just like his young self from the 60's-just a lower key.  His classic falsetto was all over the single "Getcha Back" in 1985 and was a dead ringer for the young Brian.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The inclusion of Don't fight the sea' would make a much better album on: June 05, 2012, 06:30:33 PM
At first I was disappointed that "Don't Fight the Sea" wasn't going to be on the album, but then I realized that this made room for another new song rather than have something we already own and it made a good incentive for fans to buy Al's album as well.  I have bought Al's album again just for the other song with BBs on it.  I don't get the argument that the album "sags" anywhere, as I feel that "Beaches in Mind", Spring Vacation, Bill & Sue etc are so very catchy that those are the tunes that I've been humming all day after just the first listen!  I think the album has best been described as similar to the Today album where one side is upbeat and catchy and the other is more emotional and balladie.  All in all way better than I ever expected!

<Is this worth buying or can I let this one go?>

I bought it today at Walmart and glad I did as I found SEVERAL pictures that I've not seen before.  It is 100 pages in length with pictures from all era's of their careers.  When was the last time you saw a magazine devoted exclusively to the Beach Boys in a major store chain?  Do you think you will ever see this again after this reunion year?  Don't count on it!  Why would one NOT want to jump all over this as I did when I learned it was out there(if someone was a big fan)?  I am collecting all I can this year while the publicity is high on the Beach Boys because this is a once in a blue moon deal!

>I want this album to be a success. I want Mike and the gang to feel good about themselves.>

I want this album to be succesful too but from what I've read on these forums by "hardcore Beach Boys fans" I would be lead to think that over half the album sucks after reading all the critical analysis given by those who've heard the "leaked" songs.  I've enjoyed every song I've heard so far but I'm just grateful the guys have given us ANYTHING new when the likelihood of that just a year ago was almost unthinkable!  No, not every song is going to be a masterpiece or set the charts on fire but they are songs that I find VERY catchy and tend to stay in my head immediately.  I say to the hardcore critics of this album, lighten up and just enjoy the beautiful music we've been lucky to get instead of bashing this song or that song thereby driving away those that would like to buy it!
