In fairness, the song is more of a 'grower' so it's not so strange they were underwhelmed at first listen. So was I but I quite like it now. Its good your parents like Pet Sounds though. I think the Beach Boys have such a distinctive sound if you can't 'convert' someone after playing 4 or 5 songs, then there's little chance of changing the person's mind. Although I do remember when I first got into them, I was on a bit of a mission to convince everyone I knew how good they were. Have calmed down a bit now thank God.

First time I saw Brian Wilson, October 15, 1999, Moore Theater, Seattle. Musically amazing, of course, but also because it just seemed like such a miracle. And I've never, even at other Brian shows, felt such love for a performer emanating from the audience. Pete Buck and Eddie Vedder were sitting together a few rows ahead of me. Folks noticed them (Buck kept walking up and down the aisles), but nobody really cared because, you know, we were there to see a real legend.

As far as sheer musicianship, King Crimson live in 1982 on the Beat tour. Astonishing tight, passionate peformance of incredibly demanding material. Also Zappa on his last tour (twice) and Prince on the Lovesexy tour.

And of course, Springsteen. Many times.

Yes it was definitely all the more special for being so unexpected. Saw the 2002 tour when he came to Dublin. Had been a fan for many years but never considered it likely to see him perform. Still remember sitting with my brother thinking about our late father during Lay Down Burden. A very special night

The early 70s is considered a period where soul music embraced the album concept producing unified solid works like 'whats goin on' 'There's a riot goin on' or 'talking book', all classics but 'Keeper of the Castle' by the Four Tops from 72 kinda gets overlooked. It's a gem, you should check it out

Not sure if you can call albums that topped the charts as under rated but I know what you mean: the ones you mentioned are not considered classics. Nor are these, generally, but they have some classic songs amongst the filler.

Between the Buttons: My Obsession ( a stoned brian wilson was a visitor at the session) She smiled sweetly (Jagger being surprisingly romantic), and Yesterday's Papers (great playing from Brian Jones)
Goats Head Soup: You're right, overlooked due to the albums that preceded it but a strong effort with heartbreaker, dancing with mr d and angie standouts for me
Black and Blue: The Ronnie Wood years are pretty under rated to a degree but they could lock into a killer groove when he joined eg Hey Negrita. Fool to Cry and Cherry oh Baby are fun too

For a guy who didn't want to sing over and over the crow flies...he sang the hell out of it

Would agree with Please Let Me Wonder... and would add ..We Three Kings...Good Vibrations...and Just Once In My Life ..hearing Brian strain to hit the notes on the chorus gives me chills

I know that a lot of people like Sunflower, I find it beautiful too, but it lacks a certain charm that SMiLE, Pet Sounds, and Friends have. To me Pet Sounds has a deeply depressing and beautiful personality. SMiLE has a quirky baroque personality. Friends has a mature, quirky, beautiful personality.

Sunflower to me is just a mash up of incredible songs. The album has no personality to me. Production-wise it never flowed well to my ears...I love every song on that album, but as a whole it just doesn't flow well, imo.

I agree..Friends for the mood it conveys, the contribution made by the others makes it a real band effort (something Sunflower gets alot of credit for) and for the bravery of putting out an album that went so against the prevailing trends of the day

Carry me Home. Dennis had such a sad quality to his voice so at odds with his early surfer dude image

Has it struck anyone that Brian was planning on making a break with the BBs after Friends; it has the same wistful, nostalgic feeling of Bridge Over Troubled Waters. That sense of saying goodbye to old friends. The title track itself, meant for you, the ‘good luck’ of wake the world. It seems to explore his need to get away from the pressures of the music industry to a more domesticated relaxed lifestyle (busy doin nothing, anna lee), and family life (when a man needs a woman).
In addition, the instrumental Diamond Head conveys a sense of wanting to get away from it all, while ‘I went to sleep’ apparently dates from the same sessions. Even the amount of co-writing credits gives the impression that he was passing on the songwriting craft to the others so they could carry on without him.
Obviously, circumstances kept him in the band but 20/20 shows a greater reluctance to get involved and late sixties tracks like Breakaway and We’re together again illustrate how he was conflicted about his commitments. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it.
It’s a wonderful album in any case – as someone mentioned, a balming breeze on a summers’ day.

It's not my favourite post Pet Sounds album but the one that seems to make the best impression on non Beach Boys fans is Carl & The Passions. Not sure why but it's been my experience.

the only people i listen to that was strong in the 80's were...the smiths,michael jackson,prince,the cure,even a little bit of the rolling stones (my guilty pleasure) lol

I'll give you The Smiths :)They were pretty amazing. Some REM and being Irish.. The Pogues As for the BBs ..It's Gettin Late, Where I belong.. Rock 'n' Roll to the rescue is fun and its nice to hear McGuinn playing guitar on California Dreamin. And now I'd add I do Love You (converted!)

Welcome aboard. Fairly new here myself. Like alot of people got into the beach boys through a hits comp (20 Golden Greats) without knowing much about the band, who sang which song or whatever. Then picked up Pet Sounds on cassette from a bargain bin from Our Price. Listened to it and it didn't make much of an impression until I put it on a couple of months later and it blew me away. Its still my favourite album twenty years later. Around that time the twofers came out on cd and i dived right in. It's been the best experience I've had of discovering an artist and the pleasure their music has given has been priceless. I'm envious of you starting your journey of discovery; you're going to have lots of treats along the way exploring a wonderful body of work. Enjoy

Forgot about Mona.. thats a class one alright. Don't know we gotta groove..when's that from?

Perhaps some people who aren't usually receptive to the BBs are put off by the falsetto harmonies which are so prominent on their other albums. CATP vocals are a bit more understated although still beautiful (All this is that)

Would have a perference for the pre- Brian is back stuff. Perhaps he wrote more when the inspiration struck then rather than feeling outside pressures to do so. My Brian in the 70s album: (included stuff written in 60s..even marcella can be traced to all dressed up for school)

What's your favourite Brian Wilson composition from the 70s? The Night was so Young, This Whole World..there are some gems. An album's worth maybe?  Obviously Surf's up was written in the 60s but wasn't Til I die as well?
