Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is it fair to call for an artist to quit?

I think it's up to the artist and I suppose the paying customers. For example, I finally was able to see Paul McCartney a few years ago and I thought the show was tremendous. Meanwhile, the next day in the paper they talked about his voice sounding rough and it was time for him to think about hanging it up. Nonsense, he sounded great and the place was full of people having a great time. I mean, how many times do you get to hear a concert open with the chords of "A Hard Day's Night" by the artist who wrote them? Incredible.

Thanks for the great review, Ed. It has gotten me into a kind of excitement over a release that I haven't felt since they released Smile, this is gonna be a big deal, I know it. That "Aren't You Glad" mix was enough to make me pick up 2 copies of this so BRI can keep putting out these collections!
Quick question for anybody who knows this stuff: when exactly will the album become available for streaming? Is it 12:00 AM PST on the 30th? Do they release it a little later than that in the AM? Would love to fire this album up as soon as it turns Friday since that Amazon delivery probably won't come in until a bit after noon or so.
My experience has been that albums begin streaming at midnight Eastern time, so 11:00 P.M. Central my time and presumably 9:00 Pacific the evening of the 29th for you.

1. That many fans care about this (or any BBs) CD's chart is really puzzling. I don't understand what big importance there is if it's sitting at #97, #3, #12 etc. 2. Reply to CenturyDeprived - forgive me saying this but your point about 50th T-LB murder Anniversary is absolutely stupid. 1st, it's done deal & very ancient case. Then, generally, the hypersensitive attitude by some of you about Manson connection baffled me since I read related posts. Why do we care if 1) BBs didn't kill these celebs 2) they recorded NLNTL before the murders Edit: 3) BBs track differs from Manson's demo. Therefore, there shouldn't be even question or point made about 20/20 Anniversary coinciding with murders' 50 jubilee. So what if it does? It wouldn't do BBs reputation any bad.
I care about where it sits on the charts and how many copies it sells because the better it does, the more likely we are to see more of this sort of thing. And in the case of the Beach Boys archives, it can make a difference in how the material is released. If this sells well, we are more likely to see physical releases of archival material rather than the download-only releases, which, while appreciated and enjoyed, don't quite hit the spot for me.

It’s been a long time since I laughed as hard as I did at the Summer of Paradise set. Well done.
And now let’s get real and make this happen. We can do a GoFundMe, a Kickstarter, petitions, a march on the Capital Records tower, I don't care what it takes, let's get this done because I think, inadvertently perhaps, or more likely in a flit of passing genius, that Smile Brian has hit on something here. A comprehensive Summer of Paradise box set should happen, nay, must happen. Very bluntly, for those of us who can find a way to get a piece of the action, we’re looking at a gold mine here. The CD is on the way out and I see no better way for it to end then with this.
Beyond the obvious components (electronic, gadget-laden packaging, hardcover retrospective book, postcards, stickers, buttons, thong underwear, full-size boogie board), here is how I foresee the content of the discs.
Disc One: The US version. Simple enough.
Disc Two: The rare European version. A no-brainer.
Disc Three: The even more rare Asian version. Same as the US version, but nobody will ever know because three listens to Summer in Paradise in a row, you'll be reduced to a smiling idiot in the throes of ecstasy.
Discs Four-Six: Summer in Paradise Remastered. Remastered versions of all of the above. By remastered, I mean that the sound on each disc will just be cranked up really loud on each disc, Spinal Tap style.
Disc Seven: Stack O Tracks. All vocals removed.
Disc Eight: Stack O Vocals. All instruments removed.
Disc Nine: Stack O Silence All vocals and instruments removed.
Disc Ten: Outtakes Disc: Off the cuff freestyles from Mike Love, warm-up sessions from John Stamos’ recording sessions, etc.
Disc Eleven: Alternate versions disc. Including any and all versions performed on Baywatch and Full House with overdubs from the casts of both shows as aired on the respective programs.
Disc Twelve: Summer in Paradise: Live From Paradise! A compilation disc of live tour highlights from the era.
Disc Thirteen: The Rarities. Let's finish off all Beach Boys fanatics collections with a thorough round up of odds and ends as a nice treat. Load it up with the likes of Problem Child, Crocodile Rock, that Barbie song, etc.
Disc Fourteen: Summer in Paradise: Naked in Paradise. Terrific idea guitarfool2002.
Discs Fifteen, Sixteen, and Seventeen: Fly on the Sh-t: Studio chatter, clips of bored studio players strumming on their instruments, etc. Let's really do this right and give the completists EVERYTHING!
Disc Eighteen: Mike Love in Paradise. A sampling of the solo works Mike Love has worked on and completed since his masterwork Summer in Paradise to really round the collection out and give the buyer full value.
I think we've got a winner here.

Spanish language versions actually popped up quite a bit in the 90s, although off the top of my head I can only recall Boyz II Men doing it. They released a special version of their debut album with a few, then released Evolucion, which was a Spanish version of their Evolution album, which included Spanish versions of songs from their first three albums.
Rap group Cypress Hill also did a Spanish album of their songs, but this was natural since they are Latino and speak Spanish fluently.
Did Brian have anything to do with this album? I thought I read once he came up with some counter-melodies or something.

The only Brian autograph I have is from the PBS DVD from last year. Any chance that's even legit? I'm not a big autograph guy, but that was kind of cool to have as a nice bonus.
When I was a kid, I wrote some ballplayers letters and got a few back. Years later, I found out that Nolan Ryan used auto-pen unless you sent him a big check for his charity, which a kid like me had no idea about. Really made me look at him differently. He should've just sent an unsigned picture like Tony Gwynn did.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour)
|

Looks like the Indiana show got a full-length setlist (39 including "River Deep"), then they did an extremely short setlist at Pitchfork, perhaps the shortest setlist of the tour, and then in Iowa they did a longer but still truncated setlist (assuming it's correct on setlist.fm.
Sometimes (though less so than the olden days), casino shows are required to be shorter. Since both the Indiana and Iowa shows were "Horseshoe Casino" shows, it's a bummer they did such a shortened show in Iowa. Perhaps if you get the band on the third or fourth night in a row, you sometimes get a shorter setlist. The festival gigs being shorter makes sense, but it's a bummer when two nearly-identical venues two days apart get drastically different length shows.
I was at the Iowa show (first time seeing Brian!). It was hotter than hell, the show was outside, and the band was right in the sun, so that may have been part of the shorter set. Bluntly, Brian really didn't do too well, and I was legitimately worried about him, so it's good to hear that he sounds better elsewhere. He sounded fine on the faster songs, but on a lot of the Pet Sounds tracks, he was missing a lot of lines and just kind of spitting others out here and there. But the weather was brutal. I'm just glad I finally was able to see him! We would've loved hearing "Do You Wanna Dance?" though, as it's my wife's favorite.

My recollections could be off, but I feel that this is getting better reviews than TWGMTR did (which I still love, for what it's worth). This is also the #1 album on Amazon, which is remarkable--did Radio ever make it that high there? I was thinking it didn't do as well on Amazon but did better in stores and on the QVC deal.
I like the record. The mish-mash nature of the record kind of works for me, but I can see where it would be off-putting to some. With all of the Rhino releases over the years, and my God have there been a lot, it's amazing there's anything left to use from the old days.
One frustration for me is the bonus songs. The digital version has "Me and Magdalena - Version 2" as well as a song called "Terrifying" which belongs on the album proper IMO (hell, they both do). Then I ordered a version on FYE that has another bonus song, "A Better World," which is also featured on a special vinyl record at Barnes & Nobles release along with the Partridge tune, "Love's What I Want." To add to the confusion. "Love's What I Want" can be found on the Japanese release.
I guess that's what you gotta do to sell records these days, but man, it'd be nice if the bonus tracks were all consolidated in one physical format somewhere. At least you could get it all on CD at Target for No Pier Pressure.

Bruce should certainly be in there. Josh Klinghoffer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was chosen, at the age of 31, and the guy had participated in one album (their lowest seller since their debut, for what that is worth). No disrespect to the guy, I would rather have more people put in than left out, but if he's in, plenty more should have made it in, including Bruce.

Captain, what a terrific series of posts.
This one has left me gutted. I had just rounded out my Prince collection last year, getting everything except a few of his rare and thus expensive music club releases, though I grabbed a few of those, too (and downloaded, um, legally what I couldn't purchase). I'm glad I was able to now that everyone wants their pound of flesh. I can't blame them, supply and demand and all that, but still.
Saw a clip of his last show and he still sounded great, which makes it worse I suppose--he wasn't done yet, not by a long shot.
I've always been skeptical of the "vault." The releases that did sneak out, while solid, were also packed with some filler, remixes and such (i.e. Crystal Ball). But with Prince, it's hard to say. Someone will be getting insanely rich off of it, and it won't be him. Such is life. Hopefully he left it to someone who can curate it properly, if it was his desire for it to be released at all.
How does someone who never seemed to age die?

If the 2 CD version had the Good Vibrations partial vocal track from the box set, I would definitely be in. But of course that would be too easy for fans who want the unreleased stuff and don't want to repurchase four CDs of tracks we already have.
Yeah, I had thought they had taken care of us previous box set owners, but then saw Good Vibrations was missing. Sigh.

Really cool that the Boys do this. I am still bitter that years ago Nolan Ryan sent me back an autopen signed photo. I had no idea there was such a thing until I was older. Apparently he'll send back the real deal if you include a check to his charity. Which was cool, but how was an 11-year old kid supposed to know that? Better to be sent back merely the photo than a lie. I rooted against the Rangers in the Series a few years back because of that, since they showed him in the stands constantly during games.

I just saw Love and Mercy for the first time this evening which Bill Pohlad told us was the first showing featuring One Kind of Love as the film's ending. If this soundtrack isn't released, it will be a loss to everyone who loves this music. It's impact is phenomenal.
Sigh. This is so bizarre! It is staggeringly dumb to think there will not be a soundtrack available for a movie about Brian flipping Wilson. I was fine with it if it was going to be a compilation of Beach Boys tunes we all have, but the fact that they have been rearranged for the film in an artful way makes this awfully frustrating. Spot checking some related films: Walk the Line (Johnny Cash), La Bamba (Richie Valens), The Buddy Holly Story, Ray, The Doors, Bird (Charlie Parker), and What's Love Got to do With it (Tina Turner) all have soundtracks.

I wish I lived in a time where correct spelling was something mattered. Thanks for making the world lazy and unable to proofread themselves, internet!!
"As long as I get my point across", right?
Which time would that be, exactly? Spelling has seldom been agreed in any given language upon throughout human history. Standardized spelling is a fairly recent development. Even today spelling in English can vary based on what side of the ocean you live on. To me, acting civil and showing a modicum of respect to people is far more important than spelling correctly, but to each their own. To be fair, the internet is pretty bad at both.

I agree Larry, as otherwise there'd be no listening base for a majority of radio hits these days.
I think that is also partly a generational thing. I think that's true in many cases, although it also has a lot to do with the music they were exposed to growing up. And speaking of growing up... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLGjjTiCW6wOff subject, but figured this thread could use some positivity And for the record, she LOVES NPP, although she said she thinks its funny that 'all the songs about being happy sound sad, and all the songs about being sad sound happy' My daughter is about the same age, but the song she LOVES is Runaway Dancer. Made me replay it from the live DVD a couple of times today. We must be doing something right as parents...
