Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Brand new music of mine - Coastal Cabins \

Over the past couple years, my friend and I have been writing music together somewhat aimlessly and sporadically. We finally decided that the time was right to try and make something of our music and thus, since this past April through July we had been in the process of recording our debut EP. It was mainly recorded at home, but significant portions were also recorded in our dorm rooms as well as Jenson-Noble Hall of Music at Luther College (where we go to school). We are very excited to announce the release of our self-titled debut EP on August 8th in both digital formats for download and CD – both free of charge. With all that being said, here’s the music video for the first single “We Were Young” off of the EP. Our friend from school played tenor saxophone on this song. Robert did the lead vocals, I did all of the harmony vocals and played all the instruments (besides saxophone). We hope you enjoy what we’ve been cooking up, and please stay tuned for the release of our debut EP on August 8th – there’s plenty more to come Coastal Cabins - "We Were Young" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf24SOHuy_MHere's a link to our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/coastalcabinsmusicYou can also stream and download at https://soundcloud.com/coastal-cabins/we-were-youngThanks so much for listening! Give our Facebook page a like if you dig what you hear! I think the Brian Wilson influence definitely comes through with that saxophone part in the song

Why don't someone ban Phil Cohen? It's just ridiculous enter here to read intelligent and informative posts about the great 2012 releases (and what a WONDERFUL year to be a BBs fan), and ended up reading so much downer posts from him, repeating the infamous "WALL OF SECRECY", "WALL OF SECRECY", "CAPITOL'S...WALL OF SECRECY". This is a lunatic, extremely-paranoid "fan" who didn't understand and know nothing about recording companies/music industry politics (and he think he knows everything), and who don't want to be happy with everything that will be released: simply he wants more and more or something different (maybe he think he probably could do better everytime).
We got The Smile Sessions in various configurations (the box is a masterpiece), we got a new album and single, an Al Jardine's solo album physically released with bonus tracks, great books, a astounding reunion tour, cool official videos, new PBS special, and now these 2012 remasters and for who wants 2 greatest-hits package. And he doesn't get satisfied! Come on! I'm really happy with everything, I would be with 1/3 of this list, and I'm just so proud to be a Beach Boys fan.
In response to your attack against me, I should note that Mr.Linett & Mr.Boyd stopped participating in this forum BEFORE I joined the forum, so don't blame me for their exit! And where exactly did he blame you for their exit?

Pretty insane stuff going on in there at times . Very well done, however, I almost felt like there was just a little too much going on vocally in a couple spots, notably in Holidays and Dada. Still though, the stuff you've done with the vocals are pretty amazing. The only time I felt the vocals sounded a little weird (as in noticeable manipulation) was in the "Rock rock, roll, Plymouth rock roll over" part in Holidays at the beginning. Everything else sounded surprisingly natural to me

Here's my honest opinion. The mix was kind of 'meh'...not really exciting, but not bad either. I guess I've just grown so used to the Cantina mix that that structure IS H&V to me and anything different just seems weird. HOWEVER, what you did with the Prelude To Fade...was hands down pretty fucking awesome.

This sort of thing is very dear to my heart, because I've been thinking a lot about making something like this, and you have a tracklist very close to what I'm thinking... I'm hesitant to make one though because I love my own mix so much, I don't really want an "update" to it... I left in anachronistic elements because I thought it sounded great, what I would sorely miss without them. So I am glad you've done this. So some thoughts... - I like how Our Prayers and H&V are one track. - I didn't really like your H&V, wouldn't it be the Cantina version, if we're talking about authenticity? - Interesting I'm In Great Shape... I like the inclusion of Swedish Frog, and I love how Barnyard goes so smoothly into H&F Fade remake. VERY impressed! I would still have IWBA/Workshop somehow, but that's just me... - Great Vege-Tables, I think it's very similar to the one I did. - Excellent Wind Chimes, without the reprised "heavy part" -No Fire Intro... Interesting because I was actually just going to make a thread about that (maybe I still should). I know that it began life as a random H&V intro, but how did it end up being considered a Fire intro instead? Was that a misappropriation that everyone (myself included, as well as Darian and eventually Linnett/Boyd) kept following? Or was it in fact relocated by BW at some point? - Interesting choice to put Child so at the end... is that to musically and thematically link it to Surf's Up coda? - WHAT NO SURF"S UP CODA?!?!! Sorry so much criticism, it's just that this was something dear to my heart, as I had said, but I just couldn't compel myself to do... Thanks for your thoughts. Heroes And Villains I edited together to model it after the Cantina version, but I used the verses and 'Children Were Raised' portions from the Smiley Smile/Single version because they sounded a lot better then the Cantina version. Consistency in sound quality was one of my main goals in this mix. The only thing that I changed from making an exact model of the Cantina version is that instead of finishing it with 'False Barnyard', I finished it with the 'Prelude To Fade', because 1. False Barnyard was already being used in The Old Master Painter, and 2. 'Prelude To Fade' is my favorite piece of SMiLE music...I just had to put it in there. And I see what you mean regarding using the Cantina version itself for authenticity, but at the same time...look how much Brian worked on Heroes And Villains AFTER the Cantina version was made. It's clear he wasn't done. Thank you for your compliment on I'm In Great Shape, that was one piece of this mix I was most proud of. The Swedish Frog portion in the beginning always reminded me of moaning and groaning waking up sounds (partially inspired by Mok's Smile mix), so I felt it deserved a place there. The Fire intro was never definitively part of Fire itself - it was tacked on to the beginning of Fire in the mid-80's I believe by Linnett for his 1988 SMiLE compilation (correct me if I'm wrong) simply because it sounded good...there's no historical evidence supporting that it was supposed to be part of Fire. The main reason I took it off was because I wanted to cut the time down as much as I could...to be honest, the intro isn't completely necessary in my opinion. I put Child Is Father Of The Man close together with Surf's Up for the reason you described - musically and thematically linked. However, the reason there's no Surf's Up coda...it was recorded in 1971. It just crosses the line a little too far with me over being inauthentic because it's such a big portion to use post-1967. I know, I'm wired a little weird

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "SMiLE: June '67" - My SMiLE mix...come take a look and a listen

Imagine that SMiLE was released on Tuesday, June 27th, 1967 by Capitol Records and Brother Records...it may have gone a little something like this...
Side One (17:28)Heroes And Villains (4:18) I’m In Great Shape (2:09) Do You Like Worms (3:31) The Old Master Painter (1:56) Wonderful (2:05) Cabin Essence (3:30)
Side Two (19:42)Good Vibrations (3:44) Vega-Tables (3:31) Wind Chimes (2:33) The Elements (3:48) Child Is Father Of The Man (2:23) Surf’s Up (3:44) Total Time: 37:10 Mixed in mono, as Brian Wilson and Chuck Britz would’ve done themselves No cross-fading was used in any of the edits in this mix either (except in unavoidable one spot...hardly noticiable though), only hard edits “SMiLE: June ‘67” was made by myself, with some assistance from other fan mixes, notably “Smile A.D. 2.0”, “Purple Chick Presents: The Beach Boys Smile”, and Bruiteur’s mix of ‘Barnyard’ Absolutely nothing from BWPS was used in this mix. The only post-June 27th, 1967 material that was used in this mix were the lead vocals and 'Truck Drivin' Man" portion from Cabin Essence, 'Fall Breaks And Back To Winter' vocals for the Fire portion of The Elements, and the 'Bygone, bygone' lines from Surf's Up (eventually I'll make an upgraded mix of this song without those lines) For me, this is the definitive SMiLE mix. I'm done making SMiLE mixes after this one (I think) Many of the edits and mixes in this mix are quite unique, and the sound quality has been upgraded in quite a few places. I'm especially proud of what I've done with Heroes And Villains, I'm In Great Shape, and The Elements. There's quite a few cool surprises as well, but I'll let you unwrap them by listening to the mix Also included is upgraded back cover art, with Capitol Records' monophonic recording disclaimer at the bottom Look, Listen, Vibrate, and Smile! What you did with Fire/I Wanna Be Around-Friday Night was pretty f*cking cool, not gonna lie And what was this historical evidence you discovered? Sounds intriguing to say the least, especially if it had something to do with the song sequence Also, the bonus track file was deleted for copyright infringement apparently , didn't get a chance to see what was included in it You found it! Isolating the vocals for Fire was one of the last things I did when putting together SMiLE A.D. v2.0. While I was inserting the vocals into the mix, of course I had to link it with I Wanna Be Around, which was the next track. At some point I put two and two together and figured out that the last chord of the Fire vocals matched up perfectly with the first chord of I Wanna Get Around. Of course it's just speculative, but I'm just wondering if that was planned out by Brian at some point. I was PUMPED when I first heard it, haha. Try downloading the Bonus Pack file again. I just checked it out, and it seems to be up and running. Bonus Pack is all good now, thanks

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Check out my mix of 'The Elements' (some little surprises in it)
|
on: December 18, 2011, 07:48:40 AM
|
Hey, Check out my mix of 'The Elements'. I made it to sound like how it might've been in 1967. Of course, no one knows though. All hard-edits and mixed in mono like Brian Wilson and Chuck Britz would've done (only non hard-edit is the end of Love To Say Da-Da - you'll understand). I tried to make it short, performing necessary edits here and there to bring the track length down (I don't think it would've been a 6min+ song). Here's the run-down of what's included: 1. H&V Intro from TSS [FIRE] 2. Hard edit into an edited-down-a-couple-bars version of Fire from Unsurpassed Masters (TSS version is too long) [FIRE] 3. Hard edit into Friday Night/Workshop from TSS (rebuilding after the fire - I've always been a firm believer that this was part of The Elements. Friday Night just sounds so earthy and bluesy to me) [EARTH] 4. Hard edit into Air portion (I think you'll like what this is ) [AIR] 5. Hard edit into an edited-down-a-couple-bars version of Love To Say Da-Da from TSS (I love how I ended it all, but at the same time I don't, because it goes against the historical factor by using a few seconds of BWPS...but it makes a unique ending to the song that's different from BWPS as well) [WATER] No water chant either, now knowing that it was recorded during the Wild Honey sessions. My cut off date for material to use was summer/early fall 1967 - Fire does have flown-in vocals from Fall Breaks And Back To Winter. However, ironically, as noted above, Love To Say Da-Da is finished off with a few seconds of BWPS...how do I live with myself Alright, well here it is. Check it out, download it, let me know your thoughts! "The Elements" http://www.sendspace.com/file/w54zck

Has anyone on the board ever tried to isolate the vocals of Good Vibrations? Obviously, I know the vocal multitracks are missing, but I'm wondering if anyone on the board has an audio file of (attempted) isolated vocals for GV. Please PM me or reply here if you can help me out,

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Lei'd In Hawaii
|
on: November 13, 2011, 09:20:17 AM

As you may or may not know, Lei'd in Hawaii was given a catalogue number (Brother Records 9002), and apparently cover art was also prepared. Has anyone ever seen this cover art? Does anyone have a pic of it? Or has anyone ever created their own fantasy cover art for Lei'd In Hawaii? Thanks, any info would be much appreciated!
