1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE A.D. v2.0: A Revised Stereo Mix. on: March 22, 2013, 10:23:50 PM
May be tricky, but the 'third section' of Dada (you know, the take breaks down on some CIFOTM sh*t in the Part 2 track) appears to exist as a piano track played by BW on a CCW track on the box set. Any chance you could work with that and sorta 'complete' it? (I realise this sounds kinda a massive undertaking)

Can I second this request for a recreated 'third section' of "Love to Say Dada"?  I don't know if you can also use some of the drums from the CIFOTM sessions.  Probably, as you may be a genius.

Also, an extended version of Heroes And Villains based on the "Verse Edit Experiment" would be pretty cool, especially with a number of breakdowns into group vocals.

I'm pretty sure this is the same DVD has already come out in a number of configurations - some of which included a CD.

It's made from pieces on the Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 19 The Alternate "Wild Honey" Album mostly, with instrumental additions someone has created.  Flanging effects added as well.  Pretty cool!

Has anyone heard Out Of Phase Stereo versions of other Smile Tracks?  Cabinessence works pretty well from the 20/20 version if you tweak it a bit.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vocals Only Vega-Tables Demo on: November 18, 2011, 02:12:52 AM
I've listened to it closely, and I think it goes like this:

Mike:I'm gonna be around my vegetables, I'm gonna chow down my vegetables

Brian: I like you most of all

Mike: My favorite vegetables

Yes, I've always thought it was Mike and Brian on different lines.  Like the Heroes and Villains experiment.

s£$£t!! been sat pressing refresh on oron for an hour now - just keeps saying i have to wait for a download to be available - how the hell do I get it to download???

Choose the "Regular Download" option, then there should be a 60 second countdown.  After that, you need to type in the CAPTCHA text before the actual download link is created.

If you're still having trouble, let us know and I'm sure someone can help you out.  This version of Barnyard is easily the best synchronisation I've ever heard of the song (and I've heard quite a few!)  Great job!

Not quite sure what you mean, I can't get anywhere with that Oron site. Damn I can't wait to hear this as it sounds like what we were all hoping for ...

Click here: http://oron.com/qcxlb2ls4ib7 and scroll right down to the bottom.  The "Regular Download" button is on the right hand side, under a series of red crosses.

8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surf's Up (w/67 Vocal) on: November 11, 2011, 02:09:12 AM
Oh man, with all due respect, that sounds terrible. Pitch-shifting a 'poor' vocal performance to the 'album' track.. Changing the key of the track would be a better move. Also, your problem is that Brian is singing to an out of tune piano, so obviously his pitch will be following that, hence not really working with a pitched down track either.

Were you listening to the finished product WAV: (http://www.mediafire.com/?2bnkuevsd1uz2e4) or the preliminary MP3?

What are those 4 or 5 blips in there? I have heard this with other peoples postings. Are these on the CD too?

Not on the CD that I can hear...
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Disappointment with Surf's Up on: October 30, 2011, 03:06:44 AM
What is it that you don't like about the ending? It sounds almost the same as the '71 ending, which I love. I like they "ahhs" before "A children's song..." And the addition of Carl's vocal, however unnecessary, doesn't sound too bad. I love Surf's Up so much. Any version of it always blows my mind.

First time I heard the tag I thought it was different to the '71, but you're right.  I can honestly say I was not disappointed with ANYTHING on the box.  The more I listen to the mixes, the more I like them.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: October 28, 2011, 12:09:02 AM
i'm really disappointed that they kept those awkward child child the child vocals in favor of the won one won one vocals

The "won one won one vocals" are in the acappella Wonderful section of the "Smile Backing Vocals Montage".

I do wonder if Brian would have kept the "12th st" quotes had the song been released in '67, and how much it would have resembled the BWPS version. One of my favorite pieces of the SMiLE puzzle.

Probably. I thought it was assumed it was kept off of BWPS for some sort of legal reason?

I think it would have been a part of "Look" back in '66-'67 - Brian's contemporary quote is evidence that he wanted to keep it in there even after he was told it was copyrighted material ("I'll pay for it - you know I don't steal").  For BWPS I have a feeling they just didn't want to pay for its use, even though they could have done so had they wanted.

Someone who should know told me that Brian decided to leave it out of BWPS as an artistic decision.

It's in The Smile Sessions, and the liner notes say "Look (Song For Children) contains music from Twelth Street Rag / Music by Eday L. Bowman (Public Domain)"

Although the official release date is still a week away, you can expect copies out there by mid to late this week.  Unboxing photos should be coming literally in the next few days - it's an exciting time to be a Beach Boys fan.

I'd imagine some folks have it already. Five days until international release now. Again, how has this not leaked? Sad

Capitol got it on lock down

Everyone got everything on lock down, but generally that doesn't last five days prior to release.

Messageboards, blogs, Youtube and the rest of the Internet is being monitored pretty closely by Brother Records Inc, trust me  Wink
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: October 22, 2011, 11:05:50 PM

The streams are watermarked, definitely, but I doubt anyone getting a legit copy of the box set about now isn't getting a watermarked copy or anything. Again, five days away, so retail copies have to be around.

That's right - the review copies were streamed and watermarked.  Samples of the actual box sets have no tracking that I know of.  I am lucky enough to have heard some bits of TSS and I think they are AMAZING.

Some people do indeed have it - I guess the non-leaking is an honour thing.  And I was told that review copies used tracking as a deterrent!

1-12 Surf's Up  (4:12) - 1st section - Brian vocals (as it should be!). "By gone, by gone" background vocals added generously.  The horn "answer" sections are boosted, which is great. "Are you sleeping" harmonies added. "Are you sleeping" background vocals added.  2nd section - basically the 1971 version.  But...I still prefer the Ann Wallace version for simplicty and pure beauty!

I kind of agree.  My favourite Surf's Up is still a mix someone did that sounds like the Anne Wallace for the first half, and the piano Brian solo demo for the second all the way, but in stereo.  Still, this new version is REALLY nice and I liked what they did with the tag among other parts.

Is it as good as the JMZ SMiLE Mix? I LOVE the way they finished it, It's amazing that we can do that nowadays!

Smile Sessions version uses less vocals on Look than JMZ.  On the whole, the flown in vocals are more sparse on TSS than the JMZ mixes and not quite as "out there" in the way they are used.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Think I've Hit Gold on: October 20, 2011, 02:22:53 PM
If you like the JMZ mix, you're going to love what they did with the Surf's Up tag on The Smile Sessions.  Wait and see...
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Think I've Hit Gold on: October 20, 2011, 01:34:42 PM
The JMZ mix used the "Get The Boot" vocals-only version of Surf's Up to enhance the tag.  This is Track 21 on Volume 1 and has the vocals of the whole 1971 version with no fade out.  The Smile Sessions has used these multitracks to remix the tag for the CD1 version but the full track is not there, maybe because it was mostly recorded in 1971.

Successfully heard the Linett interview (part 2 Mon.) but can't access the Boyd interview, even after registering and logging in. Is it going directly to iTunes or something? Not a technophile....

Hi there - I'm pretty sure the Alan Boyd interview is not yet up.  It's still listed in the upcoming shows.  Really looking forward to these...

I just recently bought the Keith Badman Beach Boys book, and the guy at the shop threw this one in for free!
Sounds like the guy at the shop had things backward. Or you did.

Ha!  I'm aware of the issues with the Badman book.  I wanted to get myself a copy as it has some pretty great pics and info.  I know some of it might be wrong, but it is what it is.  And I think I got a pretty good deal with the two!
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: *SPOILERS* THE SMiLE SESSIONS TRACK INFORMATION THREAD on: October 05, 2011, 03:26:41 AM
It'd be very exciting indeed if they turn out to be unheard vocals.  Even alternate CIFOTM vocals would be a beautiful thing, lets face it.

10. Look (Song for Children) (2:31)
Features "Child, Child, Child" Vocals

I know it's written in red, so it's not confirmed, but it's strange nobody seems to be interested in that. Where do these vocals come from ?

Will they be "flown ins" from CIFOTM ?
Do they come from unknown takes ?

There are a few words about these vocals on the "Leila Revelation" thread, but no real clue ...  Huh

I 'm guessing they come from the Child is Father of the Man Piano Section Vocal overdub track that appears on the SOT albums.  I've heard this in fan mixes before.  But I'd love them to be unknown vocals!

Any one able to help me out with the stereo Good Vibrations?  I can trade a stereo Alternate Version H&V (with the "threescore and five lyrics")

Hello, what kind of help ? You mean you want to hear FatherOfTheMan's version or you want to make your own GV stereo version ?

I'd really like to hear FatherOfTheMan's version.  Frankly, I don't think I could do a version as well as the mix by Austin (and possibly FatherOfTheMans).  I love Austin's mix so much that I'm really keen to hear anything similar.
