Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / In Concert CD why?
|

Anyone know why the first CD issue (CBS) of the "In Concert" sounds so bad ? It sounds like it was mastered from on off-centered vinyl record or else the tape is dragging causing the pitch to fluctuate. I thought maybe it was just my imagination but I have played it for other people over the years and most of them hear it too. Anyone know if the Capitol version better?

"Fake" (simulated) stereo is only a mono signal that has been manipulated to create the illusion of stereo by putting the mono signal on each channel of a stereo signal and then putting one slightly out of synch with the other, kind of like an echo in a stadium sound. It can also be done by re-equalizing the signal and putting all the high-end on one side and the low end on the other. This can be rather ugly sounding through headphones.

If your pressing is an original American, a mono copy will have "T 2859" in the front top right corner, and a "stereo" copy will have "ST 2859." Capitol did reissue the LP much later, and those have a green label and say "A Capitol Reissue" in the top left corner of the cover. It was reissued by Capitol again in the 1990's.

Over the years some songs that have struck me with a Wilson vibe have been:
"Shannon" by Henry Gross.
"The Longest Drink" by Jules Shear
"Brian Wilson Said" by Tears For Fears.
Most of the first album by Fugu.
"Cruisin' Music" by The Raspberries.
The intro to the Yes hit "Rythym of Love" fooled me.
and most of all "The Love Songs of B.Douglas Wilson" by Splitsville is the most striking tribute I have ever heard.

Sacred cows I don't get:
The Ramones - somebody explain this to me without saying "The Ramones were doing... While everybody else was doing..."
Velvet Underground - influential on alot of music I like, but their records don't sound like classics to me. They get by on hip factor.
Springsteen - Born To Run

I can't pick any of the top of my head but my favorite song of 2006 has to be "Fresh Mowed Lawn" by Fresh Mowed Lawn. Incredible and transcendent. If someone locked Crowded House and Tears For Fears into a studio together and said they couldn't get out until they made an epic track, this would be it.

A charting single by a group like the Beach Boys is not exactly obscure. Maybe they should create a new Grammy catagory "Best selection of an oldie for film." I am tired of seeing movie trailers with 6.5 seconds of some oldie (that has nothing to do with the movie) crammed into it. Remember the days when artists created custom songs for films? I guess it is alot easier to manipulate audience emotion with a song that is familiar to them that to have to try to be creative and do it from scratch.

I have not seen the Beach Boys vinyl boots anywhere in years. I saw a Landlocked LP at one store about nine years ago. Even the Light Album picture disc seems to have become a rarity. Sometimes the "Rarities" LP shows up at our store.

A "Yesterday And Today" album came through our record store earlier this week. There is an ebay store a few doors down from ours and one of the employees bought it by to ask me about grading and some staining on the cover. I looked at the small water stain on the back and then flipped it over. I then saw the dark part of Ringo's shirt showing through the paste-over trunk cover. Frst "butcher" cover I've ever touched! I asked the employee if he knew what he had there and he said that he had just found out it was a "butcher" by surfing the net, but the seller who brought it to them had no idea yet. The seller had just purchased it in a near by neighborhood garage sale for 25 cents.
