1  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: November 22, 2011, 09:20:27 PM
Stephen W. Desper,

My goodness, my head practically spun completely around when I noticed you recently replied to my Cool Cool Water thread!  I've sent you a personal message expressing my extreme gratitude.  The personal message also includes my email address.  Your email address is marked as "hidden" in your profile, so I didn't have luck emailing you.  Hopefully the personal message will suffice!  It is so wonderful that you took the time to reply to my inquiries regarding Cool Cool Water and the Mike Douglas show.  It is a unfathomable privilege to read some memories coming from the mastermind engineer and musician who worked so closely with The Beach Boys during such an amazing time period.  Thank you so much!  I hope to hear from you via email!

Just in case there are some people on the board who don't have a copy of "Sunflower" with the write up on the back, here's an excerpt:

"The songs on this record were recorded in true stereophonic sound; they are not 16 monophonic signals placed somewhere between left and right speakers blended together with echo, but rather total stereo capturing the ambiance of the room and the sound in perspective as heard naturally by the ear.  Although more difficult to perfect, this type of recording is far more satisfying to hear, as will be demonstrated upon playing this album."

Just figured I'd post that, as there seems to be some discussion as to whether Pet Sounds or Sunflower sound better.  Not that I' have a particular strong opinion here, I'm just contributing some information for everybody.  But anyways, let's talk FRIENDS.

Always loved how at times they say "FULL" all together in "Be Here In The Morning," while at other times in the song they refrain from doing so.

I've been enjoying this ongoing thread for quite some time now!  So many excellent videos I haven't come across on my own.  Most recently, the live in 86 version of "Wouldn't It Be Nice."  Thanks a lot for sharing, SMiLE Brian, and thanks to every body else who's contributed!
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Semi-new Here on: September 19, 2011, 03:05:14 PM
Hey to all,

I'm semi-new here.  What I mean by that is I've been reading the forum for quite some time now, and actually made a few initial posts a couple months back then started lurking again.  Well, I'm back now and realized I never made an initial 'hello' post.  First things first right?  So without further ado, this is my hello to all thread.  I plan to engage in healthy conversation about many aspects of The Beach Boys long and storied career.  Let us go on this way!

Hey Brian's Other Chin, I didn't see a link to your blog.  Sorry for the confusion...

Hey Mike, thanks for responding!  I just sent you a PM, but my computer is acting a little strange so I'm not sure if the message is going to come through 3 times, or perhaps it didn't come through at all.  Please let me know!  Thanks!
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: PM Magazine - The Beach Boys - The Tension Behind the Music - Carl / Brian on: August 03, 2011, 09:22:30 PM
I hear you, Jay.  I suppose it's impossible to determine.  I really dig Carl's overall sense of calm in the majority of clips I see him.  I wouldn't at all be surprised if he was on something, though I think it could go either way here.  I'd love to see this entire special!  I have more of it, but it absolutely is not the full broadcast.  It cuts off cold.

I now have the Melbourne concert from 78 and this, but I am really really looking for more footage from the Love You era.  I am desperately seeking a copy of the Beach Boys in Largo concert, but right now I can't pay 25 dollars online for a copy.  Could anybody help?  I have the Melbourne DVD if that is any incentive to share.

Glad you guys enjoyed having the opportunity to check out these interview pieces.  If anybody has the full segment, please feel free to share!  I think my favorite part is when Brian says "they say write about what you go through or write about things you do but uh... things I do, I wouldn't wanna write about that."

Jay, there is actually a piece of an interview with Carl on the video I posted.  I personally don't think he looks like he's under the influence of anything that affect his speech and ability to communicate clearly in an alert manner.  Are you referring to a different interview that I'm missing?

Here's an excerpt from a PM Magazine special called the Beach Boys - The Tension Behind the Music.  Both Brian and Carl Wilson are briefly interviewed.  The interviewer asks Brian if he thinks he's a genius and a shaper of modern music, and Brian discounts any of those notions.

Wow, I never knew about this interview.  Would anybody be willing to post the Brian and / or Mike Love interview?  This sounds like something I MUST hear!
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Cool Cool Water Live 1971 on Mike Douglas on: August 01, 2011, 08:07:04 AM
I guess the good news is that the Cool Cool Water performance has indeed been preserved, even if the original tapes were wiped.  That must mean the performance of the entire song exists in broadcast quality, not just the portion that was used in Endless Harmony.  Does anybody have this?  Even if it's not digitized?  I have great equipment that can digitize it!
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Cool Cool Water Live 1971 on Mike Douglas on: August 01, 2011, 08:05:49 AM
Wow guys, this is some great, though disheartening, information.  The last thing I want to be a reality is wiped tapes.  I guess these things just happen.  We should all thank that friend of Alan Boyd!  Thanks also to ian and metal flake paint for the valuable information!

Thanks a lot, man!  Yeah I'm new here... what a wealth of information and materials.  My eyes felt the strain after going through a lot of the Beach Boys magazine articles that have been posted, also the Jack Rieley posts from years back... just so much.  I'm racking my brain trying to see what I can actually contribute!

I just noticed on the Beach Boys Youtube Videos thread there was a post of Cool Cool Water / The David Frost Show, 1971 filmed May 7, 1971 @ Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, Philadelphia.  It has since been pulled from Youtube.  Does anybody know if this was the same as the video I posted links to?  Thanks!

I'm also very much interested!
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Cool Cool Water Live 1971 on Mike Douglas on: July 27, 2011, 08:38:51 AM
Greetings to all Beach Boys fans!  For a long time now, there's been a full-length clip of the The Beach Boys live performance of "Cool, Cool Water" in 1971 on Youtube.  It is said to be performed on the Mike Douglas show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnojeqlzo8s

Unfortunately,  the video quality of the clip is very poor.  This being perhaps my all time favorite Beach Boys song, I find this to be quite a bummer, as I long to see the full length performance and perhaps even some additional portions from this episode of Mike Douglas.  A piece of this performance was shared in MUCH higher quality in the Endless Harmony DVD, but it is a shorter and incomplete clip.  If you haven't seen it, check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kANkGBy5lJ4

I absolutely love this performance.  My favorite moment might actually be at :58 into the second clip where Carl's amazing voice is completely audible and you can hear the beautiful parts he's singing.  Then again, at 1:29 you can hear him quite clearly.  I believe his voice is a little more audible than it is in the mix on Sunflower, as I really get to hear the brilliance of what he is performing wonderfully live.  Every time I hear the album version now, I listen for his parts at these moments.

Does anybody have this full episode and / or performance in high quality?  It would be an incredible experience to see the bulk of the footage in broadcast quality.  Please, if anybody has any leads, let me know.  I'm happy to share, but all I have is the smaller portion of the performance in high quality, which I've managed to get up on Youtube for people to check out if they haven't already.  Also, does anybody possess any more live video performances (or audio only) of "Cool, Cool Water."  I recently had the pleasure of hearing it performed live at Princeton on 11/13/71:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9HP06opND4

Out of the two live performances I've posted (MD and Princeton), which one do you guys prefer? They are certainly quite different.  The Beach Boys appear to be using a synthesizer or some sort of percussion instrument I can't identify on the Princeton recording , which you can hear when Mike Love delivers his "In an ocean or in a glass" line.  I would love to have the opportunity to see some more live footage or hear some more live audio of this amazing song.  Please understand that I am in my early twenties, so it's somewhat difficult to hear more than what is already out there, as I wasn't afforded the opportunity to watch or attend these shows when they were happening.

Thanks guys!
